Plagron Pure Zym is an enzyme solution (hemicellulase, cellulase, beta-glucanase) that speeds up the breakdown of old roots and plant debris in the potting compost. It keeps the grow medium airy and is added to your usual fertiliser, at 1 ml per litre at every watering.
The summary
- What's in the bottle: an enzyme solution (cellulase, hemicellulase, beta-glucanase) for potting compost.
- Frequency: 1 ml per litre of water, at every watering, from transplanting to the end of the crop.
- Role in the pot: breaks down dead roots and keeps the grow medium airy.
- Near the pond: for pots and seedling compost, never in the fish water.
Enzymes that break down old roots in the compost, with every watering
Plagron's Pure Zym is an enzyme solution that breaks down dead roots in compost or coco fibre, without feeding the plant. It is dosed at 1 ml per litre at each watering, alongside your usual fertiliser and Power Roots. Intended for pots only, it never goes into an aquaponic system.
A potting soil in use gradually accumulates dead roots, rootlets broken during transplanting and plant debris. Left in place, these remains decompose slowly and compact the grow medium, while dead roots feed many pathogenic fungi. Pure Zym is a solution of enzymes that you add to the watering water to speed up this decomposition. It does not feed the plant directly: it breaks the dead matter down into fragments that soil life then turns into available nutrients.
An enzyme is a protein that speeds up a specific chemical reaction without being consumed by it. Those in Pure Zym target the constituents of plant cell walls, that is, what remains of a root once it has died. Cellulose and hemicellulose form the framework of these walls, while beta-glucans are another component. The product's technical data sheet gives the activity of each of these enzymes, so you know exactly what the bottle contains, beyond a simple mention of natural enzymes.
Hemicellulase
Activity of 164 BHU units per gram, acting on the hemicellulose in plant cell walls.
Endocellulase
Activity of 53 ECU units per gram, which breaks down long cellulose chains.
Beta-glucanase
Activity of 143 FBG units per gram, acting on the beta-glucans in plant debris.
🪱 What changes in the compost
In a healthy root system, some roots die while new ones form. A dead root that stays intact in the pot becomes a breeding ground for fungi, which can then spread to the healthy roots and slow the whole plant. By breaking down this tissue faster, the enzymes in Pure Zym shorten the time it remains available to pathogens. Once cleared of its debris, the grow medium also stays more open, letting through the air and water your roots need.
Rejuvenate old potting compost with coco fibre
Potting compost that has already carried a crop often dries out on the surface and then absorbs water poorly. Mixing compressed coco fibre into your compost at repotting restores its ability to take up water. When it is then watered with Pure Zym, the mix breaks down the roots left behind by the previous crop more quickly, and your new plants set off in a cleaner grow medium.
Store the bottle between 0 and 35 °C
Enzymes are proteins, sensitive to heat and frost. Store the bottle between 0 and 35 °C, away from frost and direct sunlight, and never in a greenhouse in high summer. Shake it before each use and close it again straight after dosing.
The dose is 1 ml per litre of water, a dilution of one in a thousand, at every watering and throughout the whole growing period. Pure Zym is poured into the same watering can as your usual fertiliser, mineral or organic, since it supplies no nutrients itself. For a 10-litre watering can, you therefore add 10 ml, which you measure with a syringe or a graduated dosing cup. On your cherry tomatoes, peppers or herbs grown in pots, the supplement can be used all season, from transplanting to the last harvest. The 100% TERRA growing schedule concentrates it in the first six weeks, with Power Roots in the same watering can. Pure Zym is suitable for peat-based mixes as well as coco fibre; with drip irrigation, rinse the pipes after use, and do not use it in NFT, deep water culture or aeroponics.
🐟 Pure Zym and aquaponics
In an aquaponic system, the breakdown of organic matter is already handled by the system itself. Fish waste and leftover feed are caught by mechanical filtration, then the micro-organisms of the biological filter and the grow bed mineralise them, and the nitrifying bacteria convert ammonia into nitrates. In the most advanced decoupled installations, the fish sludge even passes through a separate anaerobic reactor, tasked with mineralising its nutrients before returning them to the plants. Pure Zym, an organic preparation intended for grow media, never goes into the fish water: it is not poured into the tank or into a grow bed connected to the circuit.
Its place is around the system: the pots of compost on the terrace, the herb planters or the fruiting vegetable tubs that you grow in soil beside your grow beds. It is also used for the compost for your seedlings, before the young plants join the circuit. In hydroponics, Pure Zym is finally used to clean clay pebbles between two crops, by soaking them for 24 hours at pH 5.5; pebbles treated in this way are then rinsed with clear water before joining an aquaponic bed. As for the plants in the system, their most frequent shortfalls concern potassium, iron and calcium, which are corrected with products compatible with fish; the article on deficiencies in aquaponics helps you recognise them before acting.
📦 Bottles and shelf life
Pure Zym comes in 100 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml and 1 litre bottles, then in 5, 10 and 20 litre containers. At 1 ml per litre, the 100 ml bottle treats 100 litres of watering water. A balcony with ten pots that receives 20 litres of water a week therefore uses around 80 ml a month, and the 1 litre bottle is enough for a vegetable garden in raised beds for a whole season. The containers are intended for greenhouses and for in-ground crops watered by drip irrigation from a sump tank.
The product is a yellow to brown liquid with a characteristic smell, a pH of 4.8 and a density of 1.12. It keeps for 4 years after its production date, in an unopened bottle, between 0 and 35 °C. Write the opening date on your bottle, shake it before each dose to make the solution uniform, and keep it out of the reach of children, in a cupboard away from light.
