Humic acids and seaweed to root seedlings, cuttings and transplants

BioBizz's Root-Juice is a root stimulator containing humic acids and seaweed, for seedlings, cuttings and transplanting. It is dosed at 4 ml per litre during rooting, then at 2 ml at the start of flowering, before Bio-Grow takes over. The plants are therefore prepared separately, and the solution never goes into the pond of an aquaponic system.

Root-Juice is a root stimulator from BioBizz, made solely from plant-based ingredients. It combines two raw materials: humic acids, produced by the very slow decomposition of organic matter, and seaweed. Together, they support the development of the roots and the microbial life that settles around them, in the zone gardeners call the rhizosphere. You use it whenever a plant has to form new roots, at sowing, when taking cuttings or at transplanting.

🧬 Humic acids and seaweed

Its analysis does not exceed 0.2% nitrogen, 0.2% phosphorus and 0.1% potassium, so it supports rooting without feeding the plant on its own. Humic substances are natural components of the organic matter in soils and carry a negative charge: they hold nutrients close to the roots and encourage the development of lateral roots, effects observed mainly in greenhouses and varying with the origin of the raw material. Seaweed extracts, for their part, supply polysaccharides and phenolic compounds that help the plant absorb and use the nutrients available. The label classes the product among fertilisers for nutrient solutions to be diluted, with the regulatory statement required for products containing trace elements, to be used where a need is recognised and without exceeding the stated dose.

🌿 When it is useful

The stimulator is given at the time of rooting, then for as long as the plant is building its root system. With a ready-to-use compost, it is used during the first week or weeks, when good rooting matters most. The dose ranges from 1 to 4 ml per litre of irrigation water: the growing programme uses 4 ml per litre at the cutting stage and during growth, then 2 ml during the first two weeks of flowering. Your seedlings, raised for example in the Light-Mix light compost from the same range, and your cuttings receive it as soon as their first roots appear, and transplanted plants during the days following repotting or planting out. To prepare for these stages, the article on getting spring seedlings right details the schedule through to transplanting.

Seedling

Seedlings receive the solution as soon as their first roots form in the grow medium.

Cuttings

A cutting in a cube or plug absorbs it throughout the rooting phase.

Transplanting

Repotting or planting out goes hand in hand with a few enriched waterings.

Soilless

In hydroponics or aeroponics, it is added to the solution to protect the roots.

Rockwool cubes for starting cuttings

For your cuttings and seedlings destined for a soilless system, the stone wool cubes for germination provide a clean support that the Root-Juice solution moistens evenly. The roots are visible as they emerge from the cube, and you then know the plant is ready to join its system.

Stick to the dose and keep it out of the fish water

Do not exceed 4 ml per litre, the maximum dose stated on the label. Prepare the dilution in a watering can or a separate tub, never in the tank of an aquaponic system: the fish water only receives what has been approved for them.

🫧 Hydroponics and coco fibre

Root-Juice can be used in soil, peat and coco coir mixes, but also in hydroponic and aeroponic systems, where it helps protect roots bathed in the nutrient solution. In hydroponics on coco coir, adjust the pH of the water: an enzymatic activator such as Acti-Vera from the same range helps microbial life to establish itself. A pH test using drops is enough to check the solution before each watering. To get a soilless setup off to a good start, the guide to getting started with indoor hydroponics covers the equipment and the steps.

🐟 Plants prepared outside the pond

Root-Juice is dosed for watering and hydroponic solutions, not for the water of an aquaponic system, which is shared with fish and with the nitrifying bacteria of the filter: so you do not pour it in there. It does, however, have its place just beforehand: seedlings and cuttings prepared separately, in their cubes or pots, receive a few enriched waterings during rooting. Then rinse the root ball with clean water and set the plant in the grow bed, where the fish waste, converted into nitrates, takes over the feeding.

🔀 Separate loop and deficiencies

Some installations, known as decoupled systems, send the fish water to a growing loop that never returns to the pond. In that loop alone, reserved for the plants, a root stimulant can support transplanting just as in conventional hydroponics. In the fish circuit, however, it is not the roots that need stimulating but the shortfalls that need making up: iron, potassium and calcium are the elements most often lacking. A DTPA chelated iron and potassium bicarbonate meet these needs without harming the fish at the usual doses, and the guide to recognising deficiencies in aquaponics will help you identify the one affecting your plants.

🏷️ Certifications and sizes

Root-Juice is among the inputs certified by Ecocert and Control Union, as an input usable in organic farming in the European Union and under the US organic programme. It comes in 250 ml and 500 ml bottles, a 1 L bottle and a 5 L container. At 4 ml per litre, a 250 ml bottle makes up a little over 60 litres of watering solution, enough to support several rounds of sowing and transplanting in a vegetable garden. Once the roots are established, Bio-Grow takes over at watering time to feed growth. Close the bottle after use and keep it out of the reach of children.
