CANNA Aqua Flores is the two-part mineral fertiliser that takes over from Aqua Vega when flowers appear. Richer in phosphorus and potassium, it feeds flowering and fruit formation in hydroponic tomatoes and peppers, at 3 ml of A and 3 ml of B per litre.

The summary

  • The flowering formula: a mineral fertiliser in two bottles, geared towards phosphorus and potassium, for closed-circuit hydroponics.
  • The dilution: 30 ml of A then 30 ml of B per 10 litres of water, i.e. a 1/333 dilution.
  • The switch: as soon as the first flowers form, in place of the growth formula.
  • The readings: a conductivity of 1.3 to 2.1 mS/cm and a pH of 5.2 to 6.2.
  • Aquaponic system: never in the fish water, but in the plant loop of a decoupled system.
  • Fruiting vegetables: tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, cucumbers, strawberries and edible flowers.

The nutrient solution for fruiting vegetables in NFT and on ebb-and-flow tables, from the first flower to harvest

CANNA Aqua Flores is a two-part mineral flowering fertiliser, A and B, for tomatoes, peppers and strawberries in recirculating hydroponics. It takes over from Aqua Vega at the first flowers, at 30 ml of A then 30 ml of B per 10 litres. In aquaponics, it stays out of the pond and out of any beds connected to the fish.

A flowering tomato has different needs. It requires less nitrogen, which would only push more foliage, and more phosphorus and potassium, which support fruit set, swelling and ripening. Aqua Flores is the CANNA formula for this phase, in recirculating hydroponics: NFT channels, ebb-and-flow tables and clay pebble beds fed in a closed circuit. You use it from the first flowers until the last harvest, which covers several months on a tomato or pepper plant.

Less nitrogen

The foliage slows down and no longer takes over from the flowers and fruit.

More P and K

Phosphorus and potassium support flowering, fruit swelling and ripening.

Chelated trace elements

The formula also contains silicon and pH stabilisers.

🍅 The switch to flowering

You switch from the Aqua Vega growth formula to Aqua Flores when the first flowers form. On fruiting vegetables, this stage then lasts until the end of the harvest, since a tomato or a pepper plant flowers and fruits for months. The formula is also less acidifying than Aqua Vega, so the switch to Aqua Flores can be made earlier when the pH of a system fed with Vega falls below 5.0 to 5.2. Lettuces and herbs harvested for their leaves stay on the growth formula for their entire cycle, as they do not flower before harvest.

Growing a few tomatoes in a hydroponic tray

To try Aqua Flores on a small scale, a 19-litre hydroponic grow bed holds one or two tomato or pepper plants in clay pebbles. You prepare a fresh solution at each change, using 57 ml of A and 57 ml of B for a full bed, and you track water consumption at the level of the bed. This setup fits on a balcony or in a greenhouse, alongside an aquaponic system without ever sharing its water.

Pour A and B into the water separately

Mixed undiluted, the two concentrates form insoluble compounds that the plant can no longer absorb. Shake the bottles, pour A into the sump tank filled with water, stir, then pour B and stir again. Keep the bottles closed, away from light and frost, and out of the reach of children.

🐟 Tomatoes in an aquaponic system

The fruiting vegetables of an aquaponic system sometimes lack potassium at fruiting time, and the temptation is strong to pour a flowering fertiliser into the pond. Aqua Flores is not made for the water the fish live in, however, and the FAO manual considers synthetic fertilisers often too harsh for the balance of an aquaponic system. Potassium is better supplied through a potassium-based product, potassium carbonate or hydroxide, which also raises the pH, and iron through a DTPA chelated iron at around 2 mg/L roughly every three weeks. Potassium bicarbonate plays the same dual role.

Aqua Flores does, however, find its place in a decoupled aquaponics setup, where the water from the pond feeds a recirculating plant loop that never returns to the fish. This loop works like a hydroponic system, and it is precisely for recirculation that Aqua Flores was formulated. The fish water already supplies nitrates there, so you top up with a fraction of the dose, following the conductivity, up to the range of 1.3 to 2.1 mS/cm. The article which fertiliser to use in aquaponics sets out what can enter the coupled circuit.

💧 Preparing and monitoring the solution

The dose is 30 ml of A and 30 ml of B per 10 litres, a 1/333 dilution, more concentrated than during growth. After mixing, let the solution rest for a few hours before it circulates. It should then show a conductivity of 1.3 to 2.1 mS/cm, starting water included, and a pH between 5.2 and 6.2, set once and then held by the stabilisers in the formula. An electronic pH meter and a conductivity meter are enough to track these two values, which you check at the time of preparation and then every two or three days.

Replace the solution completely every 7 to 14 days, as plants do not absorb all the elements at the same rate and the composition of the sump tank gradually becomes unbalanced. Keep at least 5 litres of solution per plant in the sump tank, and top up between two changes with a half-strength solution. A tomato plant in midsummer drinks a great deal, so the level in the sump tank is a better guide than the calendar: a sump tank that drops quickly needs more frequent top-ups and a sooner change.

📦 Three kits, A and B

Each kit contains one bottle of A and one bottle of B of the same volume, and each litre of solution uses 6 ml of concentrate in total. The 2 x 1 litre kit therefore makes about 330 litres of solution, enough to feed a few plants in containers for part of the season. The 2 x 5 and 2 x 10 litre kits make about 1,650 and 3,300 litres respectively, for a full season of fruiting vegetables or a hydroponic greenhouse. Store the bottles closed, in a dark place and protected from frost.
