Biostimulant rooting gel, hormone-free
Plagron's NextGen Rooting Gel is a hormone-free rooting gel that coats the base of cuttings as they are pushed into their grow medium. This biostimulant activates the plant's own rooting and produces a dense, well-branched root system, useful for propagating basil, mint, sage or tomato suckers.
The summary
- Product type: a biostimulant rooting gel, free of synthetic hormones, in a 150 ml bottle.
- Useful quantity: 0.3 ml per cutting, with the base dipped just once to a depth of 2 to 3 cm.
- Steps: cut just below a node, dip in a clean pot, insert into a prepared hole.
- Suitable species: herbs, tomato suckers and softwood stem cuttings.
- Transplanting: as soon as the roots reach 2.5 cm, into a basket of clay pebbles or a pot.
- On the aquaponics side: the cutting roots separately, and the gel never touches the fish water.
Cuttings that root quickly, without synthetic hormones
Plagron NextGen Rooting Gel is a biostimulant cutting gel, free of synthetic hormones, in a 150 ml bottle. Dip the base of each cutting to a depth of 2 to 3 cm, using about 0.3 ml, then insert it into a cube or a pod, away from the aquaponic system. One bottle covers about 500 cuttings.
A cutting does not yet have any roots: during its first few days, it lives on its reserves and continues to lose water through its leaves. The sooner it forms its first roots, the better its chances of taking. NextGen Rooting Gel is a hormone-free rooting gel for cuttings, enriched with a natural rooting precursor, which sticks to the base of the stem and stays in contact with the tissues from which the roots will emerge. You get more roots, longer roots and more root hairs, and so a young plant that establishes itself faster and more firmly.
What you are applying is a certified biostimulant, not a fertiliser: it does not supply nutrients to the plant, it supports the processes by which the plant forms its own roots. Its technical data sheet confirms this, with only 0.07% nitrogen of organic origin, a pH of 6.3 and a very low conductivity of 0.55 mS/cm. Unlike hormone-based preparations, it contains no synthetic growth hormone. Feeding comes later, once the roots have formed, with a gentle solution suited to young plants.
✂️ Preparing and dipping the cutting
For your cutting, choose a healthy, vigorous stem without flowers, and cut it just below a node, where a leaf attaches, with a clean, well-sharpened blade. Then remove the leaves from the lower half: they would rot in contact with the damp grow medium, and the cutting loses less water with reduced foliage. Next, pour a little gel into a clean pot rather than dipping the stems into the bottle, which protects the rest of the product from sap and germs. Each cutting goes into the gel only once, on its last 2 to 3 centimetres.
Pour
A small amount of gel in a clean pot, topped up at each cutting session.
Soak
The base of the stem for 2 to 3 cm, once only, which is roughly 0.3 ml of gel per cutting.
Prick
In a hole prepared in advance in the centre of the cube, so as not to wipe off the gel when pushing in the stem.
A cutting without roots needs high humidity around its foliage. A transparent lid or a bag stretched over stakes, without touching the leaves, is enough to maintain it. Keep your tray out of direct sunlight, because heat builds up quickly under the plastic and scorches the leaves, and work with clean pots and tools. The time taken to root varies greatly from one plant to another, and you can judge progress by gently lifting a cutting out of its cube. It is ready to be transplanted when its roots reach at least 2.5 cm. For pot cultivation, a lightly fertilised compost such as Lightmix welcomes these young roots without burning them.
Push the cuttings into peat pods
The gel is designed to be inserted into a pre-drilled cutting plug. Peat sponge pods fill this role: their central hole receives the stem without scraping off the gel, and their peat keeps moisture around the base. Once rooted, the cutting is transplanted with its pod into a grow basket, without touching the young roots.
Store the bottle between 5 and 25 °C, in the dark
Store the gel between 5 and 25 °C, protected from frost and in the dark. A bottle left on a sunny windowsill or in a garden shed in winter loses its effectiveness. Close it again straight after filling your cup, and throw away any gel left in the cup at the end of the session rather than pouring it back.
🌱 Cuttings for the aquaponic system
An aquaponic system produces its own cuttings. The basil, mint or sage plants growing in the grow bed can be trimmed regularly, and each stem you cut can become a new plant, identical to the parent. On tomatoes, the side shoots you remove between the stem and the leaves root in the same way. You can thus renew your herbs and carry on a tomato variety without buying more seeds, at the pace of your harvests. The article on herbs in aquaponics presents the species that thrive best there.
Taking cuttings is done alongside the circuit: the gel never goes into the fish water, and a cutting without roots would not find in a grow bed the air humidity it needs anyway. Root it in a pod, in a rockwool cube or in a hydroponic cloner, on a nursery shelf. Once its roots exceed 2.5 cm, place it in a basket filled with clay pebbles, then watch it closely for the first few days, as the move from a very humid atmosphere to open air remains the most delicate stage.
📦 The 150 ml bottle
The bottle contains 150 ml of gel and ends in a pouring spout that makes it easier to fill your pot. At 0.3 ml per cutting, its contents theoretically correspond to around 500 cuttings, a little fewer in practice since the gel left in the bottom of the pot is thrown away after each session. For a gardener who renews their herbs and takes a few tomato side-shoot cuttings every summer, one bottle covers several propagation seasons, within its shelf life.
The gel keeps for one year after its production date, in an unopened bottle, between 5 and 25 °C and in the dark. It is a light brown gel, without foam, with a characteristic smell. Write the opening date on your bottle's label and keep the bottle in a cool cupboard rather than in the greenhouse, where the temperature often exceeds the upper limit in summer.
