Description

🌿 A simple idea that changes everything

The olla is one of the oldest irrigation techniques in the world : a porous terracotta jar, buried in the ground, which slowly releases water around it according to the plant's needs. For millennia, this method has allowed farmers in arid regions to conserve a precious resource without any complex mechanisms. These mini-ollas use the same principle, but in a tiny and clever format : instead of a self-contained jar, a repurposed plastic bottle serves as the reservoir. The result is identical, a gentle, even diffusion, controlled by the soil itself, with the added advantage of being able to use a container you already have on hand. It's pure common sense, and it works remarkably well.

💧 How does it really work ?

The magic comes from the porosity of the terracotta. Once the nozzle is buried and the bottle filled, the water doesn't flow freely: it waits for the soil around the nozzle to dry, creating a slight vacuum. It's this natural osmotic pressure that draws water out of the bottle, a few milliliters at a time, exactly where and when the plant needs it. When the soil is still damp, nothing comes out. When it dries, irrigation resumes. This naturally self-regulating system prevents overwatering and virtually eliminates surface evaporation. A 1.5L bottle can last between 5 and 15 days depending on the season, soil type, and plant. In a sweltering summer with tomatoes, expect around 4-5 days ; in autumn with undemanding herbs, you can easily go a week without watering.

🛠️ Ready in under a minute

Installation requires no tools or special skills. Find a clean bottle with a standard 28mm neck ; ordinary water bottles are perfectly suitable, from 0.5L to 2L depending on the available space. Place the nozzle onto the neck, then dig a small hole 8-10cm deep about 20cm from the base of your plant. Push the nozzle into the soil, gently firming it around the base to ensure good contact between the ceramic and the soil, fill the bottle with clean water, and let nature do its work. The set of two nozzles allows you to equip two pots or two neighboring plants simultaneously, which is practical for a balcony planter with several species or for doubling the irrigation of a vegetable planter. A light layer of mulch around the neck of the bottle further enhances its effectiveness by reducing surface evaporation.

♻️ Zero waste that waters

What makes these nozzles particularly appealing is their circular logic. You're not buying a new container ; you're recycling a bottle you would have otherwise thrown away. Terracotta itself doesn't degrade or pollute ; at the end of its life, it simply returns to the earth. No new plastic, no batteries, no app to download. For those who garden with a focus on reducing waste, conserving water, or simply gardening without constraints, this little gadget ticks all the boxes. Indoors, they allow you to go away for a week's vacation without having to ask a neighbor to water your plants. Outdoors, they withstand heat waves without any problems.
