🌿 The gardener's Swiss Army knife oya
While the Mini Oya is ideal for small pots and delicate houseplants, the M size takes things to another level : with a 1.5-liter capacity and an irrigation diameter of approximately 40 cm, it stands out as the most versatile in the entire range. Balcony, terrace, raised bed, large planter, above-ground container, it adapts to almost any setting, accommodating plants as varied as cherry tomatoes, potted citrus trees, strawberries, basil, or bee-friendly flowers.
💧 Root watering that changes everything
The Oya system is based on the natural porosity of clay. Once the jar is inserted into the ground and filled with water, it doesn't release its contents all at once : it releases them slowly, in response to the needs of the surrounding soil. When the soil dries out, natural osmotic pressure draws water through the walls ; when it's still moist, the release stops on its own. This self-regulating mechanism ensures a constant, smooth supply of water, directly where the roots need it. The result : fewer fungal diseases caused by overly wet surface soil, less water stress, and significantly more robust plants that withstand heat waves. With a capacity of approximately one week, you can water three times less often while achieving better results.
🛠️ Two-step installation
Dig a hole suitable for the size of the jar (approximately 15 x 24 cm) near the base of your plant, without disturbing the roots. Push the Oya into the ground until the top of the reservoir protrudes slightly above the soil; this raised neck makes it easy to fill. Cover the tip with soil, gently firming it down to ensure good contact between the clay and the substrate. Fill with clean water and seal with the provided stopper to minimize evaporation and prevent insects from nesting inside. That's it ! The first irrigation cycle begins within a few hours, once the clay is in good contact with the moist soil. To cover a larger area, such as an 80 cm window box or a raised garden bed, simply place two Oyas side-by-side to create a continuous irrigation zone.
🍅 What you can grow with a 1.5L Oya
A 1.5L Oya M watering can cover a 40cm diameter area, making it perfectly suited to thirsty plants that struggle with irregular watering. In a planter, it's sufficient for two cherry tomato plants along with basil. In a medium-sized window box, two Oya Ms can water strawberries, chives, parsley, and a few bee-friendly flowers simultaneously. In a raised bed, it efficiently irrigates peppers, eggplants, cucumbers, or lettuce without daily intervention. And for potted citrus trees, such as dwarf lemon and orange trees, which have regular watering needs but are sensitive to overwatering, the 1.5L Oya is particularly well-suited : neither too much nor too little, just the right amount for the plant's needs.
🇫🇷 Handmade in France
Like the entire Oyas Environnement range, this jar is handcrafted by French potters using natural, microporous clay without additives or chemical treatments. The unglazed Natural version is the most porous in the range : it is precisely this lack of glaze that allows water to permeate the walls according to the soil's needs. It weighs 1.2 kg and measures 24 cm in height and 15 cm in diameter, proportions that make it solid and stable once in place. With proper care, it will last for years.
❄️ Winter care and precautions
A limescale deposit can gradually slow down diffusion over the seasons. Soaking for a few hours in diluted vinegar water is enough to dissolve the deposits and restore the initial porosity ; rinse well before putting it back into use. The main precaution concerns frost : natural, unglazed terracotta does not withstand repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Before the first frosts, empty the jar and store it in a sheltered, frost-free location. A simple precaution for an object designed to last through your gardening seasons for years to come.
