These two bottles contain the reagents for the copper test, sufficient for approximately 50 measurements. They measure only the copper that remains dissolved in the water — the form that affects your livestock.

Outside of treatment, levels should stay below 0.05 mg/L, and readings are taken by comparing two samples in the comparator block. The test tubes, sampling syringe, comparator block, and colour chart from your kit remain in use.

The summary

The two reagents for the copper test, approximately 50 measurements, for aquarium and pond.

Copper most commonly enters a tank via tap water that has been standing in copper pipework, and sometimes through an antiparasitic medication or an anti-algae product containing it. These two bottles are the reagents only for the drop-based copper test, for approximately 50 measurements in fresh water, salt water, and pond water.

The reaction only colours dissolved copper, the copper that is actively affecting your animals at the moment of testing. Copper already deposited on the substrate as insoluble compounds does not appear in the result, nor does copper that a water conditioner has bound: this complexed copper no longer poses any danger to the tank's inhabitants, and it is removed through water changes and filter cleaning. Your reading therefore shows the fraction that actually matters to your shrimps and fish.

🎨 15 minutes of development

Fill two 5 ml test tubes, then add 5 drops of reagent 1 to one of them, mix, then add 5 drops of reagent 2 and mix again. The colour takes 15 minutes to develop fully, and an earlier reading will underestimate the concentration. Place both test tubes in the comparator block, the reference test tube compensating for the natural colour of your water, then slide the block along the colour chart until the colours match.

Activated carbon to filter out dissolved copper

If your reading shows copper with no treatment having been applied, place activated carbon in your filter, which adsorbs dissolved copper. Retest a few days later using this same set of bottles before introducing any invertebrates. The ammonium test is a useful complement to this check, since unexplained losses can also be caused by nitrogen.

The first flush from the tap concentrates copper

Run the tap for a few seconds to flush stagnant water from the pipe before filling a bucket destined for the tank, as standing water is where copper concentrations are highest. For the same reason, avoid using rainwater collected from copper guttering, and only install copper-free metal fittings in your tank or pond.

🦐 Invertebrates, fish and crops

Outside of targeted treatment, the copper level in a tank should remain below 0.05 mg/L, whether in fresh water, salt water, or a pond. You would therefore reach for these bottles before introducing shrimps or snails, after an unexplained die-off, and at the end of a copper-based treatment to confirm the water is clear of it. In aquaponics, copper added to the fish tank then circulates through your growing beds, and the guide on controlling pests in aquaponics covers solutions that introduce none.

🧴 Storing both bottles

Only reagent 2 is classified, with the Warning signal word and the H226 and H319 statements: flammable liquid and causes serious eye irritation. Store both capped bottles dry, at room temperature, in their original packaging, away from lighting rigs or any heat source. As the level must remain below 0.05 mg/L outside treatment periods, most of your readings will fall on the first field of the colour chart, and the 50-test kit covers several treatments and several invertebrate introductions.

The reagents alone, or the copper kit?

The chemistry and measurement count are identical on both sides. What distinguishes the two boxes is the comparison equipment, which can be kept from one set of reagents to the next.

This test reads two samples at the same time You need one treated test tube, one reference test tube, and a block that places them side by side against the correct scale. Refilling requires all three parts to be in good condition.
