Water pumps

Submersible, pond and circulation pumps, chosen according to the flow rate needed and how high the water has to be lifted.

A pump is chosen on two figures: flow rate and maximum head. The stated flow rate is measured with no height difference; it drops as the water has to rise higher, until it reaches zero at the maximum head. In aquaponics, the product page for the Newa Jet pump advises turning over the entire volume of the fish tank at least once an hour, taking this head into account. For a 1,000 L tank where the water rises 1 m, you therefore need a model that still delivers 1,000 L/h at 1 m, not one rated at 1,000 L/h.

The range runs from 170 L/h, for a small tank, to 16,000 L/h, for a large pond. Adjustable submersible pumps, such as the EHEIM compactON, from 170 to 12,000 L/h depending on the model, let you adjust the flow without changing the unit. On a site with no socket, a 300 L/h solar pump with battery can power an ebb and flow table. To see where the pump fits in the whole circuit, read the article Building your own aquaponic system.
