EHEIM compactON submersible water pump, 170 to 12,000 L/h
This submersible pump circulates the water in an aquarium or an indoor aquaponics system, and its flow rate is adjustable on the pump, from 170 to 3,000 L/h depending on the model. The compactON 5000 and 12000 deliver 5,000 and 12,000 L/h at a fixed flow rate.
The summary
- What it is: an indoor submersible water pump with flow adjustable on the pump itself, for aquariums and aquaponic systems.
- The seven models: from 300 to 12,000 L/h maximum, and from 7 to 110 W.
- Height decides: the maximum head height ranges from 0.60 to 4.20 m depending on the model, and the flow drops as the height to be cleared increases.
- How to choose: the height between the fish water and the outlet into the grow bed points to the right model.
- The right pipe: 12/16 mm on the 300 and 600, 16/22 or 19/27 mm on the 1000, 19/27 mm on the 2100 and 3000, 25/34 mm on the 5000 and 12000.
- How it arrives: in a parcel delivered to your door, with its suction cups, strainer and fitting.
Indoor submersible pump with adjustable flow, for aquarium and aquaponics
This submersible water pump attaches to the bottom of an aquarium or tank with its suction cups, and pushes water through a pipe to a filter, a grow bed or an indoor fountain. It comes in seven models, from the compactON 300 to the 12000, with a maximum flow rate ranging from 300 to 12,000 litres per hour. All of them work in freshwater and in seawater, and the flow can be adjusted on the pump itself, except on the 5000 and 12000. This lets you match it to the volume of your tank and the height the water has to climb.
⚙️ Adjusting the flow rate
On the 300, 600 and 1000 models, you adjust the flow by turning the regulator on the pump cover, or the intake strainer that attaches to it. The compactON 2100 and 3000, for their part, have a power regulator built into their cover. The flow of each adjustable model can thus be reduced down to a minimum, 170 L/h for the 300, 250 L/h for the 600, 400 L/h for the 1000, 1,400 L/h for the 2100 and 1,800 L/h for the 3000, enough to calm the current for small fish or to fill a grow bed without making it overflow. The 5000 and 12000 run at a fixed flow, for large volumes. The motor is enclosed in a watertight IP68 double-insulated housing, designed to stay submerged down to a depth of 1 m.
📏 Flow rate and delivery head
A pump's maximum flow is measured when the water comes out at pump level. As soon as the pipe rises, the flow drops, and it falls to zero at the maximum head height: 0.60 m for the compactON 300, 1 m for the 600, 1.40 m for the 1000, 2.40 m for the 2100, 2.70 m for the 3000, 3.60 m for the 5000 and 4.20 m for the 12000. The flow curve falls almost in a straight line, so the 1000 still keeps a little over half its flow when the water has to rise 60 cm. So choose a model whose maximum head is at least twice the height of your installation, to keep a useful flow once the pipe and its bends are taken into account.
compactON 300 and 600
From 170 to 600 L/h for 7 W, the water rises to 0.60 or 1 m, on a 12/16 mm pipe.
compactON 1000
The mid-range model covers 400 to 1,000 L/h for 15 W, up to 1.40 m, on a 16/22 or 19/27 mm pipe.
compactON 2100 and 3000
From 1,400 to 3,000 L/h for 38 or 55 W, up to 2.40 or 2.70 m, on a 19/27 mm pipe.
compactON 5000 and 12000
5,000 or 12,000 L/h at fixed flow for 70 or 110 W, the water rises to 3.60 or 4.20 m, on a 25/34 mm pipe.
The grey pipe matched to each outlet
Each compactON connects to a specific pipe diameter, and the JBL flexible pipe, 2.5 m is available in 12/16, 16/22 and 19/27 mm: 12/16 mm for the 300 and 600, 16/22 or 19/27 mm for the 1000 once its fitting has been trimmed, and 19/27 mm for the 2100 and 3000. Its translucent grey tint slows algae growth inside the pipe while still letting you see the water flowing. You can therefore order the pump and its link to the grow bed in one go, without hunting for a compatible diameter.
An indoor pump that never runs dry
The compactON is designed for indoor fishkeeping, in water that does not exceed 35 °C, and it must never run dry: keep an eye on the water level, which drops as water evaporates. Plug it into a socket protected by a residual current device (RCD) of 30 mA or less, and form a loop in the cable lower than the socket, so that any water running down the cable drips onto the floor. The cable cannot be replaced, so a damaged cable means you have to replace the pump.
🐟 Sizing the pump for aquaponics
In aquaponics, the pump lifts water from the fish tank to the grow bed, where bacteria convert the ammonia from the waste into nitrates that your plants take up, then the water flows back down by gravity. The usual guideline is to pass twice an hour the whole volume of the fish tank through the pump, then add about 30% margin to compensate for the length of the pipe and the bends. The head is measured between the water surface of the fish tank and the pipe outlet in the grow bed, and it is this, far more than the volume, that decides the model. The guide to building your aquaponic system also covers choosing the pump according to the height to be cleared.
Take a 150-litre aquarium topped with a bed of clay pebbles, whose water inlet sits 60 cm above the surface. Two turnovers per hour call for 300 L/h, or about 390 L/h with the safety margin. The compactON 1000 still delivers about 570 L/h at that height, which covers the need, and its regulator lets you reduce the flow if the bed fills too quickly. For a 500-litre tank and beds placed at 80 cm, the need reaches about 1,300 L/h: the 2100 only just covers it with about 1,400 L/h, whereas the 3000, which delivers about 2,100 at that height, keeps a real margin. For a 1,000-litre tank and beds at 1.20 m, about 2,600 L/h is required: the 5000 is the first model that is enough, with about 3,300 L/h at that height. Beyond that, for a large tank of 2,000 to 3,000 litres, the 12000 takes over.
🔌 Power consumption and maintenance
An aquaponics pump runs day and night, so its power rating weighs directly on your installation's electricity consumption. Choosing the smallest model that covers the calculated need is therefore the best setting, with the regulator then used to fine-tune the flow. The first sign that maintenance is due is a flow that weakens: the intake strainer or the regulator clog up before the pump impeller does, and rinsing them under running water restores their flow.
The pump comes with its suction cups, its intake strainer, a fitting for the delivery pipe and instructions written in French, among other languages. On the 1000, this fitting is stepped: you cut it down with a saw to the diameter of your pipe, 16/22 or 19/27 mm, before screwing it onto the pump. The 2100, 3000, 5000 and 12000 are also supplied with the parts that let you install them out of the water, placed beside the tank.
