ARKA myAqua pocket pH, EC and TDS tester
This pocket tester measures pH, conductivity in EC and in TDS, as well as temperature, with a single probe dipped in the water. It comes with its pH buffer sachets and its bottle of calibration solution, for monitoring a nutrient solution, an aquaponics tank or the output of a reverse osmosis unit.
The summary
- What it measures: pH, conductivity in µS/cm, TDS in ppm and temperature, all on one screen.
- What you receive: the tester, 3 sachets of pH buffer and a bottle of conductivity calibration solution.
- Accuracy: 0.05 pH units and 2% for conductivity, with automatic temperature compensation.
- How to choose: it replaces the pH-only tester as soon as you also monitor a fertiliser or a reverse osmosis unit.
A single device to monitor the pH and the dissolved salt content of your water
This electronic tester is held like a fat pen: you remove the cap, dip the tip into the water up to the immersion line, and the screen displays the reading along with the temperature. It reads pH from 0 to 14 with a resolution of 0.01, electrical conductivity up to 9,999 µS/cm and the amount of dissolved salts up to 9,999 ppm. A single probe therefore gives you the two values that drive soilless growing, acidity and the concentration of nutrients, with no reagent bottle or colour chart to interpret.
📟 Three reading modes
The MODE button switches the screen from one measurement to the next, and each mode displays its value above the water temperature in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit. The HOLD button freezes the reading, which lets you take the device out of the water before noting the figure in your logbook. Temperature matters, because the conductivity of the same water rises as it warms up: the device automatically corrects its readings between 0 and 60 °C, so a reading taken in the morning in a cold reservoir remains comparable with one taken in the evening.
Mode 1
The pH, from 0 to 14 with a resolution of 0.01, and the water temperature.
Mode 2
TDS in ppm, from 0 to 9,999, useful for comparing one water with another.
Mode 3
Conductivity in µS/cm, from 0 to 9,999, the quantity used in fertiliser dosing tables.
🌱 In hydroponics and aquaponics
In hydroponics, conductivity tells you how much fertiliser your nutrient solution contains: it rises when you add fertiliser, then falls as the plants absorb the elements, while evaporation pushes it up again. You then adjust the dosage according to a figure rather than a calendar. In aquaponics, the fish supply the nutrients, and conductivity tells you about the build-up of salts in the system water, alongside the drop-based nitrate tests. In both cases, pH determines what the roots can actually absorb, and it is the value you check most often.
Correct the pH of an overly alkaline nutrient solution
As soon as the tester shows you a pH that is too high in your hydroponic reservoir, the liquid pH- pH down lowers it in small doses. You add a few drops, stir, then measure again until you reach the target value. The tester and the pH adjuster are therefore kept together beside the reservoir, and each adjustment is made from a measurement rather than by guesswork.
The immersion line marks the limit
Immerse the tip in the water without going past the immersion line marked on the body of the device, because the top of the tester houses the electronics and the battery compartment. Rinse the probe in clear water between readings, especially when moving from a nutrient solution to softer water, otherwise the second reading picks up some of the first. Then put the protective cap back on before storing the device.
⚡ EC and TDS, two readings
Conductivity, written EC, measures how readily water conducts an electric current, and it rises with the amount of salts dissolved in it. TDS, for total dissolved solids, expresses that same load in parts per million: the meter calculates it from the conductivity, so the two values move together. pH, for its part, shows whether the water is acidic or alkaline, which governs the availability of nutrients to your plants as well as the comfort of your fish. TDS is also used to monitor a reverse osmosis unit, whose output water should stay below 50 ppm as long as the membrane and pre-filters remain effective.
🎯 The calibration supplied
An electronic tester stays accurate as long as you calibrate it, that is, as long as you have it read a solution of known value so that it corrects its own drift. The box contains what you need to do this as soon as it arrives: 3 sachets of pH buffer powder, including one at pH 6.86, each to be dissolved in 250 ml of water, and a bottle of conductivity solution at 1,413 µS/cm at 25 °C. The MODE button is also used to start calibration. Once set up, the device states an accuracy of 0.05 pH units and 2% for both EC and TDS, which is more than enough to manage a crop or monitor a reverse osmosis unit.
🧭 Reading a TDS value
A TDS figure only makes sense when you compare it with a reference. Good-quality reverse osmosis water stays below 50 ppm, tap water usually reads 200 to 500 ppm, and bottled mineral water commonly reaches 400 to 700 ppm. First measure your tap water, once, to establish your starting point: it determines what your solution contains before any fertiliser is added. Then take your readings in the same order, at the same time of day, with the same rinsing water, and you will see the differences emerge week after week.

pH alone, or pH and conductivity?
Three ways to monitor the pH of your water. Only one also measures conductivity, which is useful as soon as you dose a fertiliser or check a reverse osmosis unit.
