Sinking wheat germ granules for koi, in water at 5 to 15 °C
When the pond water drops below 15 °C, your koi change their behaviour: they come to the surface less, stay closer to the bottom and eat less, because their digestion slows down with the temperature. Wheat Germ Sinking is designed for this period: 100% sinking pellets, made with wheat germ, highly digestible and easy to assimilate. They are intended for water at 5 to 15 °C, that is, for autumn, when your fish are preparing for winter, and for spring, when they are regaining strength. They are also suitable for regions with a harsh climate, where this cold period lasts several months.
🌾 The benefits of wheat germ
In cold water, a koi's digestion slows down, and a rich food stays in its gut for a long time without being properly absorbed. Wheat germ provides easily digestible energy and a more moderate level of protein, here 32% compared with 47% for a growth food. Your fish gets what it needs to build up reserves before winter, and then to regain strength in spring, without the ration turning into waste in a pond where the filter bacteria are also running at a slower pace. The formula also supplies vitamins A, D3, E and C, and it aims at immunity and digestibility, two sensitive points at this time of year.
What a sinking pellet needs
A sinking pellet is no longer visible once it reaches the bottom: you cannot remove what has not been eaten. So feed small amounts, weighed out the first time on a set of scales and then marked in a cup, watch whether your fish take them, and only then add more. Do not feed anything below 5 °C, when the fish are living off their reserves. And do not give this feed to ruminants or any other animal species, as it contains fishmeal.
🍂 Sinking or floating: which to choose
The range also comes in a floating version, with the same wheat germ idea. The choice depends on how your fish behave. If your koi still come begging at the surface in autumn, the floating one lets you see every pellet and remove the surplus. If they stay on the bottom as soon as the water cools, which is common in a deep pond or with timid fish, the sinking one goes to them where they are. Many keepers use both: the floating one while the fish come to the surface, the sinking one when they no longer do.
From 10 to 15 °C
You give a small ration once a day, in a single meal, while your fish build up their reserves before winter.
From 5 to 10 °C
The ration drops to 2 or 3 feeds a week, in small amounts, watching what is eaten.
Below 5 °C
Feeding stops, and your fish live off their reserves until the water warms up again.
An ammonium test to dose the flow
With a sinking pellet, you cannot see what is left on the bottom after the meal, and this surplus breaks down slowly in water where the filter is working at a reduced rate. An ammonium test taken every week through the autumn tells you whether the ration exceeds what your fish eat: a reading that rises from one week to the next signals that you need to cut back the amounts. The same reading guides you in spring, when you increase the rations again.
🌸 Getting going again in spring
At the end of winter, fish are thin and their defences recover more slowly than the parasites and bacteria in the water. This is the time to start feeding again with this feed, as soon as the water stays above 5 to 8 °C, beginning with very small amounts. Increase gradually as the water warms up, then switch to the all-season feed or to Vitality Plus once it rises above 12 to 15 °C. A floating thermometer read in the morning remains the best guide, because pond water warms up much more slowly than the air.
🌱 In aquaponics
In aquaponics, autumn is the period when the crops slow down at the same time as the fish, and when the biofilter loses activity in the cold. A digestible feed, given in moderation, then keeps the water clean. With 32% protein, 100 g of this feed releases into the water, once digested, around 3.3 g of ammoniacal nitrogen, the lowest figure in the range along with the floating wheat germ feed. Uneaten pellets fall into the settling zone or into the grow bed, where they break down slowly: one more reason to feed sparingly. If your system is indoors and the water stays above 15 °C, a warm-season formula is more suitable. The guide to preparing your aquaponic system for autumn details the adjustments for this period.

Frequently asked questions
8 questions
6 key questions, 8 in the detailed view
Estimate your fish's ration in fresh water
Enter the total biomass of your fish, that is, the sum of their weights. The calculation uses 0.5% of the biomass per day, a guide for water at 10 to 15 °C. Between 5 and 10 °C, spread this amount over just two to three feeds a week.
Total daily ration, in a single meal, for water at 10 to 15 °C.
The 0.5% factor is a cautious guideline for adult fish in cool water, where digestion is slow. Below 10 °C, the actual ration is smaller still. The overriding rule remains to give only what is eaten, since sinking pellets cannot be retrieved.
