Polyethylene film supplied on a roll, in 0.1 or 0.2 mm, two formats
This film is high-density polyethylene, in 0.1 or 0.2 mm. It is a thermoplastic: it does not stretch, it folds, and it cuts straight with a craft knife. This property tells you exactly what it is for, namely lining a base that is already flat.
📏 Two sizes, two thicknesses
The range comes down to three options: 3 m by 2 m in 0.1 mm, 3 m by 2 m in 0.2 mm, and 3 m by 3 m in 0.2 mm. Thickness does not change the surface area; it changes what the film can take, the 0.2 mm handles abrasion from a grow medium, a hand passing over it, and repeated handling far better. For everything else, calculate the surface area before choosing, by adding the length of the tank, plus twice its depth, plus a margin. A tank measuring 1.20 m by 0.80 m and 0.30 m deep already requires a film of 2 m by 1.60 m, margin included.
✂️ Installation, in four steps
Empty and sand down the tank
A protruding screw, a wood splinter, or a rough breeze-block edge will pierce a thin liner.
Double the corners
Slide a piece of felt or thick card into sharp corners where the liner will be under the most stress.
Unroll flat
Do not pull on it. Form the corner folds by hand and fold them flat against the side.
Fix above the water level
Whether you use staples, a batten or weighting, the fixing always remains above the waterline.
In a water-based system, this liner seals secondary volumes, whether that's the fresh-water reservoir, the sump tank where water settles between two levels, or the base of a grow bed built from masonry or timber. These are flat-bottomed tanks, constructed before being lined, where a liner can be fitted in an afternoon. It's also an excellent way to test a layout before committing to a permanent build, you put the tank together, fill it, and watch how the water moves over a season. The protective fleece matters just as much as the liner
A thin liner laid directly onto bare timber, breeze blocks or gravel will not last a season, and this is the one expense that should never be skipped. An old geotextile sheet, a thick layer of cardboard or a ground mat will do the job across the entire surface, with particular attention to the corners. Also plan for a pad under the pump if it sits on the bottom, as a vibrating pump body will eventually wear through the liner at that exact spot.
What pierces a film two tenths of a millimetre thick
Four things puncture this liner: a staple placed below the waterline, sharp gravel thrown onto the base, a pump resting directly on the liner without a mat, and a pair of secateurs left in the tank. A protective fleece under the liner and a mat under the pump address all four in one go, and cost far less than dealing with a leak. A leak shows up as a drop in water level that stops at a particular height, and that is precisely where you need to look for the hole.
⏳ The limits of HDPE
An HDPE liner of this thickness is not a pond liner for dug ponds, and the confusion can be costly. It does not stretch, so it cannot conform to shapes dug into the ground and will be punctured by the first stone that works its way up. It is also not designed for permanent UV exposure, meaning any edge left in direct sunlight for two summers will become brittle and crack under light pressure. Reserve it for built structures with flat bases and straight walls, and protect any exposed edges with a batten, a coping stone, or a folded-over layer of grow medium.
🔧 Repairing and re-cutting
A repair on this type of liner must be done dry, which means draining the volume first. Dry the area, degrease it, then apply a patch of the same liner material extending well beyond the hole, using an adhesive specifically designed for pond liners, standard glue and builder's tape will not bond to polyethylene. Where two sheets are joined, the overlap must run in the direction of flow and be bonded along its entire length, never in spots. Keep your offcuts from the first installation somewhere in the shelter: they will serve as patches and save you from buying a whole roll for a few square centimetres. For a volume that needs to follow an excavated shape rather than a built tank, take a look at a reinforced fabric above-ground pond, which is designed for a different set of requirements.
