Hatchery, Artemix and sieve to feed your fry on live prey

The Hobby brine shrimp hatching kit includes the 470 ml Artemia Breeder hatchery, a 195 g sachet of Artemix and a sieve, so you can produce live food for fry. With around 15 g of Artemix, the nauplii hatch in 24 to 36 hours at 24 °C, with aeration from an air pump. One sachet covers a dozen hatchings.

This brine shrimp hatching kit brings together the three Hobby items that let you produce live food for your fry at home: the Artemia Breeder hatchery of 470 ml, a 195 g pack of Artemix that already mixes the eggs and the salt, and a sieve for harvesting the nauplii. These tiny crustaceans swim in front of your young fish, catch their attention and provide them with high-quality proteins and fats.

The Artemia Breeder is a transparent tank that sits on its base or attaches inside your aquarium, whose water keeps it at the right temperature. A diffuser connected to an air pump gently stirs the water, so the eggs do not settle in any dead corner. Once hatching is over, a built-in separator holds the empty shells at the surface, while the nauplii gather at the bottom.

🦐 Hatching, step by step

  1. Rinse the hatchery, then assemble the diffuser with the fittings supplied.
  2. Fill it with tap water up to the 470 ml mark and add about 15 g of Artemix, which corresponds to the dose of 16 g per 500 ml.
  3. Connect the pipe to an aquarium air pump, which you will need to provide separately: the JBL ProAir silent air pump in its 60 L/h version is more than enough for this volume.
  4. Leave the air running for 24 to 36 hours at 24 °C, or 30 to 40 hours at 20 °C.
  5. Then wedge the diffuser in place with its stop so that the bubbles pass through the separator; after 30 to 60 minutes, the shells will have floated up and you can switch off the pump.
  6. Draw the nauplii from the bottom with the syringe, pour them into the sieve, rinse them in fresh water, then feed them.

A 195 g sachet of Artemix therefore covers around a dozen 15 g hatches. As nauplii are fed fresh, it is better to restart the hatchery every day or every 2 days, in small quantities, than to produce a lot at once: this gives you a continuous supply while your fry grow enough to accept a dry food.

Rinse the nauplii before feeding

The hatching water is salty and full of empty shells. Never pour it into the fry tank: collect the nauplii in the sieve and rinse them in fresh water, which avoids introducing salt and debris where your young fish live.

Infusoria for larvae that are too small

Some larvae, such as those of gouramis or bettas, are still too small at hatching to swallow a nauplius. For these first days, Hobby Protogen infusoria can be given as granules or as a culture, until your fry accept brine shrimp. Liquizell and Mikrozell foods, offered alongside Protogen, then let you grow on some of the nauplii to follow the growth of your young fish.

Small adult fish, such as tetras or killifish, also hunt nauplii eagerly, and regular feeding over a few days encourages many species to spawn. Offer them within 12 hours of hatching, as they then lose part of their fat. If you rinse and dry the hatchery between two cultures, you limit bacteria and the next culture hatches better.

🧂 Items sold individually

The other formulas are there to refill the kit or to add to it. Artemix on its own replaces the sachet once it is empty. The artemia eggs, in a 20 ml or 150 ml tin, are used with artemia salt: in the hatchery, you add one level spoonful of salt, about 15 g, and one to two teaspoons of eggs. The set of 4 sieves sorts the artemia by size, and the hatching tank floats in the aquarium with no pump or electricity.

🌱 In aquaponics

Breeding your own fish lets you replenish the stock of an aquaponic system without buying more, especially with prolific species such as guppies, platies or tilapia. Nauplii give the fry a solid start during their first weeks. The guide to raising tilapia in aquaponics details the temperature, volume and feeding this fish needs.
