Neutral plastic spawning cone, 25.5 cm, for discus pairs
The JBL DisCon is a spawning cone for discus: it gives the pair a smooth, sloping surface on which to lay their eggs. It stands 25.5 cm tall with a base diameter of 11.1 cm, is made of inert plastic, is stable and unbreakable, and sits directly on the bottom of the aquarium. Its conical shape is the one sought out by discus ready to spawn, which usually choose a vertical or sloping surface in their natural habitat.
🥚 A smooth wall to spawn on
The pair easily clean its continuous wall before spawning, because it has neither the crevices of a root nor the grain of a stone. Its wide base stops it from tipping over when you work in the tank, and you can move it with one hand to place it in the corner the pair have chosen. The plastic it is made of is inert: it releases nothing into the water, which matters in a breeding tank where you closely monitor the total hardness GH.
A thermometer and a fine net for the spawn
The suction-cup aquarium thermometer sticks on at the height of the cone and gives you the temperature of the area where the eggs are laid, which can differ from that at the top of the tank. The fine-mesh net, with its 8 cm net, then lets you move fry without injuring them, which a coarse-mesh net does not allow. Both items are useful from the very first days of spawning.
A 3-day rinse after a cleaning product
After cleaning with an aquarium cleaning product, the cone spends 3 days in tap water changed every day before going back into the tank. A residue of cleaner on the spawning surface can jeopardise the next brood.
Place the cone in a calm area, away from the direct current of the filter and from busy spots, then let the pair adopt it. As it stands 25.5 cm high, the water depth must clearly exceed this figure for its top to stay submerged, which limits it to tanks with at least 30 cm of water. You can move it a few centimetres during the first days, while you find the spot where the pair comes to clean it.
🧽 Cleaning between spawnings
Between spawnings, the cone needs disinfecting before it goes back in the tank, and the procedure should be followed to the letter. Soak the cone for 2 hours in very hot water, or bring it to the boil in a bain-marie. If you prefer a cleaning product, dip it briefly in an aquarium cleaner and scrub it. In every case, before putting it back in the tank, leave it for 3 days in tap water that you change every day, as it is this last step that flushes out the cleaner's residues.
🐠 Which fish it suits
The DisCon is designed for discus, the only species named on its packaging, and its 11.1 cm diameter at the base is sized for a pair of adult discus. Other cichlids that spawn on a vertical surface, such as angelfish, can use it too, provided you have a tank that is tall enough. The cone complements the conditioning of your breeding pair, which relies on a varied diet, such as a staple food for cichlids, and on stable, regularly tested water.
