Fast rooting for transplanted plants, in pots or in the vegetable garden

Plagron's Power Roots is a liquid root stimulator for plants in soil and potting mix, based on humic acids, vitamins and seaweed extract. It is dosed at 1 ml per litre at most, up to the third week of flowering. Never in an aquaponic circuit: on clay pebbles, Hydro Roots replaces it.

A tomato or lettuce plant that has just been transplanted often stalls for a while: some of its roots were damaged when it was lifted out of its pot, and it has to regrow them before it resumes growing. Power Roots is a liquid root stimulator for soil and compost, which encourages rapid rooting after transplanting. Add it to the watering water as soon as the plant is planted, then at every watering until the start of flowering.

🧾 A formula for the roots

Power Roots contains almost no major elements: depending on the version of the formula, its analysis ranges from 0.5 to 1.7 % potassium expressed as K2O, with nitrogen and phosphorus only in trace amounts. It is therefore not a fertiliser, and it does not replace your usual nutrition. Its action comes from its other components. The humic acids promote root branching and the thickening of the absorbing root hairs, the seaweed extract provides metabolites that support root architecture, and vitamins C, E and B1, together with myo-inositol, assist the formation of new roots.

The current formula adds hydrolysed proteins, which support the formation of lateral roots and the tolerance of young plants to the stresses of transplanting. It also gives the dark brown liquid a pronounced plant-like smell, with no effect on the plants. In France, the product is authorised as a fertilising material under marketing authorisation number 1180284, as a potassium sulphate solution enriched with vitamins, humic acids and myo-inositol.

1 ml per litre of water at most, i.e. a 1/1000 dilution.

Frequency

At every watering, together with your usual fertiliser.

Stop

After the third week of flowering, including that week.

Storage

4 years, bottle unopened, between 0 and 35 °C.

Use repotting to get the roots going

Moving from a small pot to a larger one is when a plant most needs to form new roots. A 4-litre fabric pot keeps the potting soil airy over its whole height, and Power Roots, applied from the very first watering, supports the colonisation of this new volume. Your tomatoes or peppers then get going again faster after being moved.

Water by hand rather than with drip irrigation

Its organic components make Power Roots poorly suited to irrigation systems, where they clog pipes and drippers. Keep it for the watering can, or clean your installation regularly if you run it through one. Do not exceed 1 ml per litre, which is a maximum dose.

Shake the bottle, pour the dose into the water, then add the fertiliser and mix before watering. On your cherry tomatoes, peppers or courgettes, the schedule runs from transplanting until the end of the third week after the first flowers open. The aim is for the plant to have built most of its root system by the time it directs its reserves into flowers and then fruit, which is why you stop at this stage rather than at the end of the crop.

Salad leaves, spinach and herbs, harvested for their foliage, receive Power Roots throughout their time growing in pots. Seedlings raised in a light potting compost benefit from it too, from their very first transplanting into small pots. Once diluted, the mixture may turn cloudy and give off an odour, a sign of natural bacterial activity linked to the organic ingredients and harmless to plants: so prepare only the amount you need that day, and do not store the solution from one watering to the next. The 100% TERRA growing scheme combines it with Pure Zym enzymes, added to the same watering can, on a compost such as Lightmix or Growmix.

🐟 Power Roots and aquaponics

In an aquaponic grow bed, rooting depends first of all on the water in the system: well-oxygenated roots, a dissolved oxygen level kept above 5 mg per litre for the fish and the bacteria alike, and a pH held between 6.4 and 7.5 so that nitrification carries on. Power Roots, formulated for soil, never goes into the fish water: its organic ingredients have no place in the tank or in a bed connected to the system.

It does, however, keep its place around the system, in the potting compost pots on the patio and the soil beds of the vegetable garden. The plants intended for the grow bed, for their part, are raised in a nursery in rock wool or coco fibre and transplanted at least 2 weeks after their first true leaves; on these inert media, it is its mineral version, Hydro Roots, that is used. In the system, the real shortages concern potassium, iron and calcium, to be corrected with fish-safe products such as potassium bicarbonate.

📦 Sizes and shelf life

Power Roots comes in bottles of 100 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml and 1 litre, and in containers of 5, 10 and 20 litres. At 1 ml per litre, the 100 ml bottle makes up 100 litres of watering solution, enough to support the transplanting of a few dozen plants, and the litre makes up 1,000. If you only water with Power Roots in spring, during the transplanting period, the small bottle is often enough for a balcony or a vegetable patch.

The 4-year shelf life makes a medium size a sensible choice, since a bottle that has been started will keep from one season to the next as long as it stays closed, protected from frost and below 35 °C. The 5 to 20 litre containers, which make up 5,000 to 20,000 litres of water, are aimed at greenhouses and seedling production. Keep the bottle upright during transport, as the label requests, and store it in the dark.
