Vitalink Hydro Max Bloom takes over from the growth version when tomatoes, peppers, aubergines or strawberries come into flower in hydroponics. This two-part mineral base is dosed at 3 to 4 ml of A and the same of B per litre, in a soft-water or hard-water version depending on your tap water.

The summary

  • Target stage: flowering and fruit set of vegetables grown hydroponically.
  • Flowering dose: 3 to 4 ml of A and 3 to 4 ml of B per litre, from week 2 to week 7 of flowering.
  • Which version: soft water or hard water, chosen after measuring the conductivity of your tap water.
  • Where fish are concerned: in a growing loop separate from the fish, never in their tank.
  • Yield: one litre of each part makes 250 to 330 L of solution.
  • Adjustment: the pH is corrected after mixing the two parts, checked with a tester.

The nutritional base for soilless fruiting vegetables, from the first flower to the last fruit

Vitalink's Hydro Max Bloom is the two-part mineral base for tomatoes, peppers and strawberries grown soil-free during flowering. After a week of flowers under Hydro Max Grow, it is dosed at 3 to 4 ml of A and of B per litre. Available in 1, 5 or 10 L, it feeds a separate loop, never one shared with the fish.

A tomato plant that is flowering has changed needs: it puts less energy into its foliage and more into its flowers, then into filling out its fruit. Hydro Max Bloom is the fruiting version of Vitalink's hydroponic base, made in the United Kingdom. It comes as two concentrates, A and B, which provide the basic elements for flowering together with EDDHA chelated iron, fulvic acids, trace element chelates, phosphites and vitamin B1, making it a complete solution for your soilless fruiting vegetables.

🌸 The flowering stage boost

The switch is made when your tomatoes, peppers or strawberry plants show their first buds. The first week of flowering stays on Hydro Max Grow, the growth formula from the same range, which young plants receive at 1 to 2 ml per litre in the first week and then at 3 to 4 ml per litre. You then switch to Hydro Max Bloom, dosed at 3 to 4 ml of A and the same of B per litre from the second to the seventh week of flowering, following the brand's schedule. On young plants setting their first trusses, stay at the lower end of the range, then gradually move up to 4 ml per litre as the fruit load increases and the measured conductivity allows.

The two concentrates are poured into the water separately

Parts A and B are kept separate because certain elements form insoluble salts when they meet in concentrated form: calcium with sulphates and phosphates, iron with phosphates. Never mix them together before dilution. Pour part A into the water in the sump tank, stir, then add the same quantity of part B, using two separate measures so that not a drop of one falls into the bottle of the other.

🐟 A loop separate from the fish

A complete mineral fertiliser like this one should not be poured into the fish circuit. Its salts would add to the nitrates the system already produces. In a coupled system, where the same water passes from the fish to the plants, the feed provides little potassium, calcium and iron, three elements that tomatoes and peppers in fruit need in particular. The University of the Virgin Islands model, often cited as a reference, therefore supplies them separately: potassium and calcium through the pH buffer added daily, iron as a chelate every 2 to 4 weeks.

Correcting a deficiency without touching the fish

If your aquaponic tomatoes turn yellow between the veins of the young leaves, DTPA chelated iron can be dosed into the circuit at 2 mg/L roughly every 3 weeks, without risk to the fish at this dose. For potassium, potassium bicarbonate raises the pH while supplying the missing element, alternating with a source of calcium. In this way you correct the fruiting of your vegetables with products designed for living water, and you keep Hydro Max Bloom for a loop without fish.

It is in a decoupled aquaponic system that this fertiliser finds its place. The pond water, laden with nitrates, is drawn off to a growing tank from which it never returns to the fish. In this tank, nutrition can be corrected freely, and supplements often cover half of the plants' needs or more, most often in the form of hydroponic salts like these. For example, you fill a few Dutch buckets filled with clay pebbles with this enriched water, and your tomatoes receive the potassium they need for fruiting without the conductivity of the pond being affected.

💧 Soft water or hard water

Measure first

Measure the conductivity of your tap water with an EC tester before adding any fertiliser.

Low-mineral water

Rainwater, reverse osmosis water or soft tap water should use the soft water version.

Hard water

Tap water rich in calcium should use the hard water version, designed for it.

Heavily loaded water

Cut it with osmosis water or rainwater before adding the two parts.

The version is chosen according to the conductivity of the water used to prepare the solution, before any fertiliser is added. Hard water already provides calcium and bicarbonates, and the hard water formula is designed for that kind of water, which also needs more pH correction. Once the two parts are diluted, adjust the pH after mixing, never before, then check the final conductivity with the pH and conductivity tester. The solution may take on a reddish tint: this comes from the EDDHA chelate, which keeps the iron available, and is not a problem.

🍓 The crops it suits

The fruiting formula is intended for plants that you grow for their flowers or fruit: tomatoes, peppers, chillies, aubergines, cucumbers and strawberries, in NFT channels, deep water culture, ebb and flow or drip irrigation on clay pebbles, perlite or rockwool. The strawberry, which flowers and fruits continuously in the everbearing varieties, receives it all season. Lettuces and herbs, harvested before they flower, stay on a growth formula. To help the flowers of an indoor tomato set fruit, the guide to pollinating your plants indoors complements the feeding.

Working out consumption is simple, since each part is dosed in equal volume. At 3 ml per litre, a 1 L bottle of each part makes up about 330 L of solution; at 4 ml per litre, about 250 L. A 30 L sump tank therefore receives 90 to 120 ml of A and the same of B at each change. The 5 and 10 L sizes suit a greenhouse where several dozen tomato plants run on the same solution throughout the season, while the 1 L size is enough for a few buckets on a terrace or a decoupled loop of family size.
