Mineral nutrition for fruiting vegetables in pots, from flowering to harvest

CANNA Terra Flores is a mineral flowering fertiliser for tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and strawberries in pots or potting compost. It takes over from Terra Vega at the first flowers, at 50 ml per 10 litres, or 60 ml for tomatoes in production. Available in sizes from 1 to 10 L. It must be kept out of the fish water in an aquaponic system.

A tomato plant in a 30-litre pot carries several kilos of fruit in a very limited volume of potting compost, and once flowering has started, it is the fertiliser applied with the watering that decides whether the trusses set and swell. Terra Flores is the complete liquid fertiliser for flowering and fruiting in pot and potting compost cultivation, indoors or outdoors. It contains all the nutrients a plant needs during this phase, trace elements included, in a directly available form, and it dissolves instantly in the watering water.

🍅 The needs of a flowering plant

During flowering, the plant's need for nitrogen falls, while its needs for phosphorus and potassium rise considerably. Terra Flores adjusts these proportions for the phase that produces the harvest: its label states 2.1% total nitrogen, 1.6% P2O5 and 3.7% K2O. Its trace elements are chelated, meaning bound to an organic molecule that protects them: they stay available to the plant instead of becoming locked up in the compost, and the formula avoids reactions between nutrient ions that would make some of the elements unavailable just when the plant needs them most.

You switch fertiliser when the first flowers appear. On a tomato, that is the opening of the first truss; on a pepper or chilli, the first white flowers at the leaf axils; on a strawberry plant, the spring flowers. For plants grown indoors under lighting, flowering normally begins after 1 to 3 weeks at 12 hours of light a day. Until then, your plants stay on the growth formula from the same range, Terra Vega, which follows the same dosing logic, and then Terra Flores takes over until the end of the harvest.

💧 Dose and watering

The base dose is 50 ml per 10 litres of water, a dilution of 1/200. The range's feeding schedule then adjusts this dose to 50 to 70 ml per 10 litres during the elongation and swelling of flowers or fruit, then to 40 to 60 ml during bulking up, before stopping completely at ripening. If your compost is poor, it receives the solution at every watering during intensive growth, while a fertile compost gets it one to three times a week. The ready solution shows a conductivity of 0.9 to 1.6 mS/cm, tap water included, and a pH between 5.8 and 6.2. Prepare it with water between 20 and 25 °C, because below 15 °C the roots' capacity for absorption drops quickly.

Check the pH of the prepared watering solution

The pH of your tap water varies from one region to another, and it changes again after the fertiliser is added. An electronic pH tester dipped in the watering can for a few seconds tells you whether the solution is between 5.8 and 6.2. Correct it before watering: within this range, the potting compost keeps its nutrients available, and your tomatoes make full use of every feed.

Store the bottle in the dark, away from frost

Ultraviolet light breaks down iron chelates: a bottle left in the sun on the balcony loses part of its effectiveness. Store it closed, in a dark place protected from frost, out of reach of children. Stick to the stated dose, and do not exceed it to speed up the harvest.

For tomatoes, the range publishes a detailed feeding schedule, drawn up for 14 hours of light a day and tap water at 0.4 mS/cm. After 6 weeks of seedling and growth under Terra Vega, Terra Flores is used at 60 ml per 10 litres as soon as the first trusses flower, and this dose stays constant throughout production. Total conductivity therefore rises from 1.9 mS/cm at the start of flowering to 2.2 mS/cm at the height of the harvest, when the PK 13/14 supplement is added to the same water, then falls again at the end of the crop.

First trusses

For 3 weeks, 60 ml of Terra Flores per 10 L, total conductivity of 1.9 mS/cm.

First tomatoes

For 6 weeks, same dose, with a PK supplement: total conductivity of 2.2 mS/cm.

Full harvest

For 8 weeks, the tomatoes can be picked regularly, at 2.2 mS/cm.

End of the crop

After about 2 months of harvest, the trusses become fewer: return to 1.9 mS/cm for 4 weeks.

To find out where your potting compost itself stands, a simple test is enough, ideally after 3 to 5 weeks of growing. Take a little moist compost from several pots, pour 150 ml of distilled water into a graduated container and add compost up to the 250 ml mark. After 2 hours' rest, stir, measure the pH, filter, then measure the conductivity. A conductivity of 1.1 to 1.3 mS/cm and a pH of 5.8 to 6.2 show that your feeding is well dosed; above that, space out the fertilised waterings.

🐟 Fruiting vegetables in aquaponics

Terra Flores is formulated for potting compost and for a solution acidified to pH 5.8 to 6.2: it must not be poured into the fish tank or into a grow bed connected to the circuit. In your aquaponic system, tomatoes and peppers feed on the fish water, and their most common deficiencies are corrected in other ways. Potassium is a limiting element there, and can be topped up with potassium bicarbonate, while blossom end rot on tomatoes signals a calcium deficiency, which you correct with calcium carbonate, which also supports alkalinity. Finally, iron is supplied in chelated form at around 2 mg per litre, using a DTPA chelated iron suited to the pH of your circuit.

Terra Flores does, however, find its place alongside the system. The tomatoes, peppers, chillies, aubergines or strawberries that you prefer to grow in pots of potting compost on the terrace, rather than in the grow beds, are fed with it just as in any raised-bed vegetable garden. In a decoupled growing loop, separate from the fish, the formula to choose is not this one but a hydroponic nutrient such as Aqua Flores, since that loop contains no potting compost. The guidelines specific to fruiting vegetables grown in fish water are detailed in the article on growing tomatoes in aquaponics.

📦 Sizes and consumption

Terra Flores comes in 1-litre bottles and in 5 and 10-litre jerrycans, all in recyclable polyethylene containers. At the base dose, one litre makes up 200 litres of watering solution, enough to look after a few potted tomato plants for a good part of the season; at 60 ml per 10 litres, it makes up about 165. If you grow more, the 5 and 10-litre jerrycans suit raised-bed vegetable gardens and fruiting vegetable greenhouses. Shake the bottle before each measurement, and measure the volume with a graduated dosing cup rather than the cap.
