Non-contact infrared thermometer with laser sight
This infrared thermometer reads the temperature of a surface in half a second, without touching it, from -50 to 330 °C. You aim the laser at a heat mat, the surface of a tank or the grow medium of a seedling tray, and the backlit screen shows the value.
The summary
- What you receive: a Benetech infrared thermometer with laser sight and backlit display, supplied with 2 AAA batteries.
- The range: the temperature of a surface, from -50 to 330 °C, to the nearest tenth of a degree, without contact.
- The sighting: a 12:1 ratio, meaning a 1 cm spot at a distance of 12 cm.
- The accuracy: 1.5 °C or 1.5% of the reading, with emissivity set for matt surfaces such as water or potting compost.
- What it is for: the surface of objects, water, leaves and grow media, not the ambient air.
- In aquaponics: a quick inspection round of the tanks, grow beds, pumps and heaters.
Non-contact measuring gun for checking mats, trays, grow media and heaters
The Benetech infrared thermometer reads the surface temperature without contact from -50 °C up to 330 °C, accurate to 1.5 °C or 1.5%, with a laser sight and a 12:1 distance ratio. It checks a heat mat, a grow medium or the surface of a fish tank, whose bottom temperature should always be measured with an immersed thermometer.
Every object gives off infrared radiation, and the hotter it is, the more intense that radiation. An infrared thermometer picks up this radiation through a lens and converts it into a temperature, so it reads the targeted surface without touching it, in about half a second. This Benetech model measures from -50 to 330 °C, with an accuracy of 1.5 °C or 1.5% of the reading, and displays the result to a tenth of a degree on a backlit screen that is easy to read in a dim greenhouse as well as in sunlight. A laser pointer shows you the spot being measured, and the last value stays on the display after the measurement.
🎯 The 12:1 distance ratio
The device does not measure a single point but a small spot, whose diameter grows with distance. Its ratio of 12:1 means that at 12 cm from the surface it reads a spot 1 cm across, and that at 1.2 m it reads one 10 cm across. To check a small object, such as a seedling plug or the sheath of a heating cable, you therefore need to get within a few centimetres, so that the spot stays entirely on the target. Conversely, a reading taken from a distance averages everything the spot covers, tray, grow medium and shelf included.
At 12 cm
The spot measures 1 cm, small enough to aim at a seedling plug or a pot.
At 60 cm
The spot measures 5 cm, enough to read the surface of a tray or a heat mat.
At 1.2 m
The spot reaches 10 cm, handy for sweeping a wall or the surface of a tray.
The laser
It marks the centre of the spot, not its outline, which remains wider than the red dot.
✨ Glossy surfaces
Emissivity, which describes a surface's ability to emit its own radiation, is set here at 0.95. This value suits most of the matt surfaces you come across in the garden: water, compost, leaves, the plastic of trays and containers, wood, concrete or paint. A shiny metal, on the other hand, such as aluminium or polished stainless steel, reflects the ambient radiation instead of emitting its own, and the reading comes out far too low. A piece of matt adhesive tape stuck onto the metal is then enough to get an accurate value, once it has reached the temperature of the surface. The sensor works in the 8 to 14 micrometre band, the one in which glass and most transparent films let nothing through, which explains why a window pane can be measured, but not what lies behind it.
Never point the laser at an eye
The laser pointer is for aiming at objects, never at people or animals: do not point it at the eyes, either directly or via the reflection from a window or from water. Keep the device out of the reach of children. Keep it dry as well, as it is not designed to be submerged or to stay under the watering of a greenhouse.
Checking the heat of a heat mat
A heat mat can be checked in a few seconds: aim at its surface from a few centimetres away, then at the grow medium of a tray placed on it after an hour of heating, and you will see the real difference between the mat and the roots. The mats in the seedlings and cuttings collection can be adjusted this way, from a measurement rather than by touch, and you will immediately spot a cold zone under a badly placed tray.
🐟 A monitoring round in aquaponics
Infrared works well for measuring water, but only at the surface. On a sunny day, the top layer of a tank can be noticeably warmer than the bottom where the fish stay, and at night the reverse happens when the surface cools in contact with the air. The infrared thermometer is therefore for quick checks, to compare at a glance the surface of a tank, a grow bed or a pipe, whereas a thermometer immersed in the water, like those in the heating and thermometers collection, remains the reference for setting a heater or deciding how much to feed the fish, in water that stays in aquaponics at around 18 to 30 °C, cooler for trout. The two devices complement each other: one gives the exact value at one spot, the other shows you in thirty seconds whether the whole system is keeping up.
A typical round takes less than two minutes. Aim at the surface of the fish tank, then at the water leaving the grow bed and the water in the sump tank: a difference of several degrees points to a pipe running in the sun or a poorly insulated tank. Next, aim at the body of the pump and that of the air pump, comparing them from one week to the next, because a motor that runs hotter than usual often signals a clogged impeller or a worn bearing. In winter, the wall of a tank placed against a north-facing wall or the bottom of a tank standing on a cold slab show where to add insulation, as explained in the article on protecting your aquaponic system in winter.
Leaves can also be measured very well, since they emit like a matt surface. Under a grow lamp placed too low, the leaf at the top can become warmer than the air in the room, whereas a plant that is well supplied with water normally keeps a leaf slightly cooler than the air thanks to transpiration. Comparing the leaf closest to the lamp with one at the bottom therefore tells you whether the lighting needs to be raised. In a greenhouse, the same check spots a cold wall, a draught under a door or a heater that no longer heats, and it tracks the temperature of the seedling grow medium, which the guide to succeeding with spring seedlings in aquaponics puts at the heart of germination.
🔋 Getting started and conditions of use
The device is held in one hand like a pistol. A squeeze of the trigger starts the measurement, the figure appears and stays frozen on the screen when you release it, long enough for you to note it down, and the device switches itself off after a few seconds. It runs on 2 AAA batteries of 1.5 V. One button switches the display between degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit, and another turns off the laser if you are working near animals. The electronics are designed to work between 0 and 40 °C: so take the thermometer out of an overheated greenhouse in the height of summer, and let it return to room temperature for about ten minutes when you move from a heated room to a cold shed, otherwise the first reading will drift.
