The summary

A submersible heater with electronic control, with or without Wi-Fi control

The EHEIM thermocontrol e are aquarium heaters that are fully submerged in the water and hold the temperature with an electronic thermostat, to within 0.5 °C. They come in ten power ratings, from 25 to 400 W, for a tank of 20 to 1,200 litres. The thermocontrol+ e range adds Wi-Fi control: you set the target temperature from your phone, and an email warns you when the water drifts away from it.

🌡️ Electronic regulation

A probe measures the water temperature around the heater, and the electronics switch the heating off or on again to hold your set temperature, adjusted from 20 to 32 °C using the dial. A red light comes on while heating, then turns green once the temperature is reached. The tube is coated in laboratory glass, which enlarges the heating surface and spreads the heat. A dry-run protection feature, Thermo Safety Control, switches the unit off if it ends up out of the water. The cable is approximately 1.70 m long, and the double suction-cup bracket supplied fixes it to the glass.

Small tub

The 25 W and 50 W models are enough for up to 60 litres.

Medium tank

The 75 and 100 W models heat from 60 to 150 litres.

Large tank

The 125 to 200 W models cover from 125 to 400 litres.

Very large tank

The 250 to 400 W models heat up to 1,200 litres.

Unplug and leave to cool in the water

Before putting your hand in the tank or lowering the level for a water change, unplug the heater, as you would all electrical equipment in the aquarium. Then leave it in the water for at least 30 minutes before taking it out, because the tube stays scalding hot after heating. If you have taken it out by mistake while it was running, do not put it back in: unplug it and let it cool for at least 1 hour on a surface that can withstand heat. The dry-run protection cuts the heating when the unit is out of the water, but it does not replace any of these precautions.

📶 The thermocontrol+ e with Wi-Fi

The thermocontrol+ e can be set from a smartphone, tablet or computer, via your home Wi-Fi, from 18 to 32 °C. It sends you an email when the temperature drifts 2 °C from the setting, which flags a fault or a cold snap before your fish suffer from it. It can also be synchronised with an EHEIM professionel 5e filter or an LEDcontrol+ light from the same connected range. It comes in 150, 200, 250 and 300 W, for a tank of 200 to 1,000 litres. Submerge it up to the water-level mark, and no further, to ensure good Wi-Fi reception.

A thermometer opposite the heater

A suction-cup aquarium thermometer stuck on the opposite side of the tank shows you the temperature where your fish actually live, far from the heater's sensor. That way you can check at a glance that the whole volume has reached the set temperature, especially during the first cold nights.

🔧 Fitting it in the tank

Attach the heater to the glass with its double suction-cup bracket, always vertically, in an area where the filter current is strong: the heated water is then distributed throughout the tank instead of staying around the tube. Before plugging it in, check that the glass shows no cracks and submerge it at least to its minimum water level mark. Let the cable hang in a loop lower than the socket, so that a drop running down the cable falls to the floor rather than reaching the socket. Finally, protect your aquarium equipment with a 30 mA residual current device, and keep the water below 35 °C, the heater's operating limit.

🌱 In aquaponics

In a small indoor aquaponics system, temperature governs the fish's appetite and the activity of the bacteria that convert their waste into nitrates for the plants, as explained in the article on the nitrogen cycle. Stable water at 24 to 26 °C keeps these bacteria active all winter. Tilapia and tropical species need this all year round. Place the heater in the fish tank, near the water return, so that the current distributes the heat. With a thermocontrol+ e, the email alert also warns you if the pump stops.
