Plagron's Green Sensation is a mineral fruiting booster that supplies phosphorus, potassium and iron to tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and strawberries during the second half of their flowering. It is dosed at 1 ml per litre at every watering, in soil, coco fibre or hydroponics, and replaces a standard PK supplement.
The summary
- Booster profile: P2O5 8.3%, K2O 9.1% and iron 0.9%, as a mineral liquid.
- One millilitre: per litre of water, at each watering, never exceeding it.
- When it comes in: from the fourth week of flowering until the end of the harvest.
- What to pair it with: your usual flowering fertiliser, in place of a 13-14 PK.
- Fish circuit: in a plant loop or in pots, never in the fish water.
- Growing media: soil, coco fibre and hydroponics.
Phosphorus, potassium and iron to feed the fruit at the end of the cycle
Plagron's Green Sensation is a liquid booster of phosphorus, potassium and iron, available from a 50 ml bottle up to a 20-litre drum. Dosed at 1 ml per litre, never more, it joins the flowering fertiliser from the fourth week of flowering. In aquaponics, it is used only outside the fish circuit.
When a tomato plant sets its first trusses, its needs change: it requires less nitrogen for its foliage and more phosphorus and potassium to fill out its fruit. Green Sensation, from the Dutch brand Plagron, is designed for this second half of the cycle. This dark green liquid concentrate combines, in a single bottle, a supply of phosphorus and potassium and a dose of iron, enough to keep the foliage a healthy green while the fruit swells. You add it to your usual flowering fertiliser on tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, courgettes and strawberries.
🧪 An analysis focused on the fruit
The concentrate contains 8.3% P2O5, 9.1% K2O, 0.9% iron and 0.5% nitrogen, entirely in ammoniacal form. Phosphorus plays a part in energy transfer within the plant and in flower formation, while potassium regulates water movement and the transport of sugars to the developing fruit. Iron, finally, is needed to make chlorophyll, which is why a deficiency shows first on the young leaves, which turn yellow between veins that stay green. These levels are deliberately kept moderate, because an excess of phosphorus and potassium does not improve the fruit: it simply loads the solution with salts.
The concentrate has a density of 1.28 and a pH of 5.9, and its conductivity reaches 124 mS/cm. This figure explains the very low dose, at one thousandth, because a few millilitres too many are enough to over-salt a watering solution. Green Sensation replaces both a PK supplement and a flowering stimulator, which saves you from piling up bottles on a single crop. It does not, however, replace the base fertiliser, which continues to supply the nitrogen, calcium, magnesium and trace elements that the plant always needs.
Tomatoes and aubergines
From the fourth week after the first flowers open, at every watering.
Peppers and chillies
Same schedule, throughout the period when the fruit swells and takes on its colour.
Strawberries and courgettes
As soon as the harvest gets under way, to support the fruits that follow one another on the plant.
Pair a complete flowering fertiliser with the booster
Green Sensation provides little nitrogen and no calcium, two elements that a tomato plant heavy with fruit cannot do without. A basic flowering fertiliser such as Terra Bloom covers these needs, and the booster is added to it at 1 ml per litre from the fourth week. For a vegetable garden in pots or a small greenhouse, the 100 or 250 ml size is enough for a season: at 1 ml per litre, 250 ml treats 250 litres of irrigation water.
Never more than one millilitre per litre
The millilitre per litre figure is the maximum dose. Overdosing burns the roots, and excess potassium slows calcium uptake, which encourages blossom end rot, those black patches that appear at the tip of tomatoes. Measure the concentrate with a graduated syringe rather than the cap, and shake the bottle before each use.
The dose is 1 ml per litre of water, a dilution of 1:1000. First pour Green Sensation into your water, then your base fertiliser up to the usual conductivity for the crop, and water with this mixture at every feed. Then measure the pH of the final solution, which should stay slightly acidic so that phosphorus and iron remain available. The product is suitable for soil and potting compost, such as Lightmix, for coco coir and for hydroponic systems, indoors or outdoors, and it can be combined with the other Plagron fertilisers.
🍂 Reading the leaves at the end of the cycle
During fruiting, your leaves show whether the nutrition is keeping up. A lack of potassium appears late, on the older leaves, whose edges take on a scorched or burnt look and curl downwards, sometimes with black spots and flower drop. A lack of iron, by contrast, affects the young leaves at the top, which turn yellow between veins that remain green. Finally, an excess of fertiliser shows on the leaf tips, which are dry and browned, while the rest of the blade keeps its colour. These three signs are not corrected in the same way, hence the value of telling them apart before adding anything.
If the edges of the older leaves are turning brown even though you are already dosing Green Sensation, first check your watering, because a root ball that dries out between feeds deprives the plant of potassium as well as calcium. If the yellowing affects the young leaves, check the pH of the solution before increasing anything, since iron becomes poorly available when the pH rises. If it is the tips that are burning, flush the grow medium with clear water and reduce the dose of the base fertiliser. In all cases, never exceed 1 ml of booster per litre to compensate.
🐟 Fruiting vegetables in aquaponics
Fruiting vegetables are the most demanding crops you can grow in an aquaponic system. Potassium is the element that most often runs short and must be supplemented, iron is kept at around 2 mg/L with a chelate, and phosphorus becomes less available when the pH moves outside the range of 6 to 7.5. Green Sensation does contain phosphorus, potassium and iron, but it is a concentrated mineral fertiliser, designed for watering and hydroponics. You should therefore never pour it into the pond of a coupled system, where fish and plants share the same water.
Within the circuit itself, corrections are made with products that are safe for fish: potassium bicarbonate for potassium, which also raises the pH, and DTPA chelated iron for iron. Green Sensation finds its place in a decoupled aquaponic system, where the fish water feeds a separate plant loop that does not return to the pond: there you dose 1 ml per litre on tomatoes and peppers without exposing the fish. It is also used for fruiting vegetables in pots or in the ground set up around the system, as detailed in the article growing tomatoes in aquaponics.
📆 Its place in the feeding schedules
The four 100% TERRA, NATURAL, COCO and HYDRO growing schedules all place Green Sensation at the same point, from week six to week ten, at 10 ml per 10 litres. As flowering starts in week three in these schedules, this corresponds to the fourth week of flowering. It goes with Terra Bloom in soil, Cocos A and B on coco fibre, Hydro A and B in hydroponics and Alga Bloom in an organic vegetable garden. With Terra Bloom as with Alga Bloom, the dose of the base fertiliser drops slightly in the week the booster arrives, before going back up. The PK 13-14 is not added on top, since Green Sensation already supplies the phosphorus and potassium for this period. In the final week, you water with plain water.
