Liquid trace element blend for nutrient solution
CANNA Trace Mix is a liquid blend of trace elements: chelated iron, zinc, boron, manganese, copper and molybdenum. It corrects the minor deficiencies that turn young leaves yellow or deform them, or supplements a fertiliser to support growth and flowering, at 10 to 20 ml per 10 litres of solution.
The summary
- Six trace elements: chelated iron, zinc, boron, manganese, copper and molybdenum in liquid solution.
- Low dose, high dose: 10 to 20 ml per 10 litres of water, i.e. 1 to 2 ml per litre.
- When to use it: on a visible mild deficiency, or as a supplement to a fertiliser on very pure water.
- In an aquaponic circuit: for a decoupled growing loop, never the fish water, because of the copper.
The six trace elements in one bottle, for young leaves that are turning pale
CANNA Trace Mix is a liquid blend of six trace elements, including chelated iron, against micro-deficiencies in young leaves. It is added to the base fertiliser, at 10 to 20 ml per 10 litres, after checking the pH; CALMAG AGENT first corrects water that is too soft. As it contains copper, it must not be poured into an aquaponic circuit.
Trace elements make up only a tiny fraction of the plant, but none of them can be missing. Iron and manganese are involved in the production of chlorophyll, zinc in the growth of shoots, boron in the strength of tissues and the formation of fruit, copper and molybdenum in specific enzymatic reactions of the metabolism. When one of them is lacking, it is generally the young leaves that turn pale, become mottled or deform. CANNA Trace Mix combines them in a single bottle, so that you can correct a micro-deficiency without identifying each element.
The composition contains 0.3% boron and 0.3% zinc, 0.07% molybdenum, then 0.06% each of copper, manganese and iron. The iron is protected by two chelating agents, DTPA and EDDHA, which wrap around it to stop it oxidising and keep it available when the pH of the solution rises. These trace elements serve several enzyme systems that bear on the plant's energy balance and development. You can combine it with most fertilisers, with one exception, concentrated calcium fertilisers, and the plant absorbs it immediately.
🔍 Recognising a micronutrient deficiency
Before correcting, always check the pH of your solution. A pH that is too high makes the iron and manganese already present insoluble, and produces exactly the same symptoms as a genuine deficiency: in that case, it is the pH that needs bringing back down, not a fertiliser that needs adding. If the pH is correct and the young leaves stay pale or distorted, Trace Mix supplies all the trace elements in one go. That way you avoid piling up bottles for a diagnosis that the symptoms alone cannot always settle.
Most trace elements are not very mobile within the plant: once fixed in a leaf, they are no longer redistributed to the growing parts. This is why deficiencies appear at the top of your plants, on the youngest leaves, while the lower leaves may stay perfectly green. After a correction, leaves that are already marked do not always turn green again; it is the new shoots, one to two weeks later, that show whether the feed has worked.
Iron and manganese
The young leaves turn yellow between veins that stay green.
Zinc
Small leaves, bunched tightly on short, sometimes twisted stems.
Boron
Dying buds, malformed fruit or hollow stems.
Check the pH before adding trace elements
A good share of the yellowing blamed on iron deficiency actually comes from a pH that is too high, which locks up the iron already present. A drop pH test lets you settle the question in a few minutes before any correction. That way you add trace elements only when they are really lacking, which protects the plant from overdosing.
Never mix pure Trace Mix with a calcium fertiliser
When concentrated, this mix reacts with a concentrated calcium fertiliser and forms an unusable deposit. Always dilute each product in water, one after the other. Also stick to the dose: an excess of trace elements harms the plant, and that is the first risk of a badly measured correction.
💧 Dosing the correction
Add 10 to 20 ml of Trace Mix per 10 litres of nutrient solution that is already prepared, which is a dilution of between 1 in 1,000 and 1 in 500, then mix and check the conductivity and pH. Start with the low dose and watch the new leaves for one to two weeks before increasing. The product suits hydroponics, coir and soil. It also works as a regular supplement when you prepare your solutions with very pure water, rainwater or reverse-osmosis water, which supplies no trace elements of its own.
A complete fertiliser already covers everyday trace element needs, so Trace Mix is not meant to be added to every watering as a matter of course. It comes into play when a deficiency appears despite a correct pH, or when your starting water is devoid of minerals. If only iron is lacking, a dedicated iron chelate corrects that element more directly, with a content far higher than the 0.06% in the blend.
🐟 Trace elements and aquaponics
Micronutrient deficiencies are common in aquaponics, and the most frequent one involves iron, which precipitates as soon as the pH rises above 7. Even so, Trace Mix should not be added to a coupled system: it contains copper, an element to which fish are sensitive, and its dose has not been established for a fish-stocked system. In your system, iron is corrected with a DTPA iron chelate, applied at around 2 mg per litre every three weeks according to the aquaponics guide from New Mexico State University, with the pH kept between 6.4 and 7. The article on micronutrient deficiencies in aquaponics describes the other signs to watch for.
Trace Mix comes into its own as soon as the plants' water no longer returns to the fish. In a decoupled system, the water from the pond feeds a separate growing loop, and the plants' solution can be topped up with trace elements there without exposing the livestock. It is also suitable for seedlings raised in a nursery before they enter the system, provided you rinse the cubes at transfer, and for vegetables grown in pots or on coir next to the pond. One one-litre bottle makes 500 to 1,000 litres of solution; keep it closed, protected from frost and light, and out of reach of children.
