This growth fertiliser is based on sugar beet vinasse, produced by natural fermentation. Rich in potassium with an NPK 4-3-6, it supports vegetables from the first leaf right through to the end of the harvest, at 2 to 4 ml per litre of watering, and is approved for organic farming.
The summary
- Raw material: a liquid organic nitrogen fertiliser based on beet vinasse, NPK 4-3-6.
- Dosage: 2 to 4 ml per litre of water, at nearly every watering.
- Season of use: from the first leaves, or at 10 to 15 cm in height, until the end of the harvest.
- Mode of action: its sugar feeds the life in the soil, which gradually releases the organic nitrogen.
- Near a pond: for neighbouring crops grown in soil, never in the fish water.
- Sizes: from the 250 ml bottle for a balcony to the 10-litre can for a greenhouse.
Beet vinasse to feed vegetables and fruit plants in the ground, from seedling to harvest
BioBizz's Bio-Grow is a liquid organic growth fertiliser made from beet vinasse, NPK 4-3-6, suitable for organic farming. Dosed at 2 to 4 ml per litre of watering, from the first leaves to the harvest, it pairs with Bio-Bloom for flowering and feeds soil crops growing next to an aquaponic system, without ever entering the fish water.
BioBizz Bio-Grow is a liquid growth fertiliser made from sugar beet vinasse grown in the Netherlands. Vinasse is the residue left when beet is processed into sugar, obtained through natural fermentation. The product is classed as a nitrogen-containing organic fertiliser and can be used in organic farming. Its analysis gives 4% nitrogen, 3% phosphorus and 6% potassium, a balance that suits plants in full growth as well as those starting to bear fruit.
🍬 Sugar to feed the soil
During manufacture, enzymes convert the starch contained in the vinasse into glucose. This sugar, together with the other nutrients, feeds the micro-organisms in the grow medium, and the potassium helps to activate this bacterial flora, giving you a more alive grow medium over successive waterings. The fertiliser therefore feeds the plant in two ways: directly, through the mineral fraction of its nitrogen, and indirectly, through the soil life it sustains. Of the 4% total nitrogen, about 3.5% is in organic form and is released gradually as the bacteria break it down. To keep this microflora active, worm compost remains a good ally when preparing your beds.
Starting out
The first feeds begin as soon as the first leaves appear, or when the plant reaches 10 to 15 cm.
Growth
Throughout the vegetative phase, water with 2 to 4 ml per litre, at the pace of your watering.
Fruiting
The fertiliser continues to support fruiting vegetables until the end of fruit production.
Rotation
During the growth stage, it can give way to Fish-Mix from the same range, which is richer in nitrogen.
A pH tester to monitor your watering water
In coco fibre, the pH of the watering water should be checked once the fertiliser has been diluted. An electronic pH tester gives you the value in a few seconds, which lets you adjust the watering can before pouring rather than noticing a problem on the foliage a few weeks later. If the value drops below 6.2, a few tenths of a millilitre of Bio-Up will raise it without a strong acid. You can also use it with soil, to check from time to time the water draining from under the pots.
On coco fibre, an organic fertiliser is not enough on its own
Coco fibre contains very little microbial life, so the organic nitrogen in Bio-Grow is poorly released in it. On this grow medium, the cultivation programme calls for adjusting the pH of the water and adding an enzyme product such as Acti-Vera. Without these two precautions, the plants turn pale despite regular feeding.
The dose of 2 to 4 ml per litre is diluted directly in the watering can. Start with 2 ml on young plants, then increase gradually as the foliage fills out. Bio-Grow can be used in most soils and composts, indoors or outdoors. Prepare the solution at the moment of watering rather than several days in advance, since its sugar and organic components start to be consumed by micro-organisms as soon as they are diluted. The dose also depends on how rich the compost is: with a rich compost such as All-Mix, the feeding schedule stays at 2 ml per litre during flowering, whereas with a light compost such as Light-Mix it rises to 4 ml.
Pour the solution at the base of the plants, onto soil that is already slightly damp, so that it spreads through the whole root ball instead of running off the surface. In a pot, water until a little drains out of the bottom, a sign that the whole volume has received the fertiliser. In open ground, a 10 litre watering can dosed at 30 ml is enough for a few tomato plants or a row of lettuces. Keep to this routine at every watering throughout the season, simply reducing the dose if the leaf tips turn brown.
🍅 From foliage to fruit
Potassium, at 6%, is the most abundant element in the analysis. It regulates the movement of water in the plant and the transport of sugars to the growing organs, which explains why Bio-Grow remains useful when tomatoes, peppers or courgettes begin to swell. The growing programme allows you to prefer Fish-Mix, which is higher in nitrogen, during the purely vegetative phase, provided you return to Bio-Grow as soon as flowering begins, when it is paired with Bio-Bloom. The two growth fertilisers must never be mixed in the same watering can. On your leafy vegetables, such as lettuces, spinach or chard, it is used on its own until harvest.
At 3 ml per litre, a one-litre bottle makes up a little over 300 litres of solution, which is a season's supply for a vegetable garden of a few square metres watered twice a week. The 250 ml bottle is enough for a few pots on a balcony or for a first trial. The 5 and 10-litre containers are intended for large vegetable gardens and family greenhouses, where watering volumes reach several hundred litres a month during the summer.
🐟 Alongside an aquaponic system
In an aquaponic system, it is the fish that supply the nitrogen: the bacteria in the filter convert their waste into nitrate, which the roots absorb from the water. The element most often lacking there is potassium, and the high potassium content of Bio-Grow can therefore be tempting. It is not the right answer, though, because its sugar and organic matter, poured into the pond, would feed bacteria that consume the oxygen your fish need. The potassium in a system is corrected with potassium bicarbonate, which raises the pH at the same time.
Bio-Grow, on the other hand, has its place in the soil-grown crops that often go alongside a pond: squashes, potatoes or fruit trees in open ground, plants too large for a grow bed. It is also used for plants raised in potting compost for the vegetable garden, while the plants destined for the system are started in inert pots. The article on the difference between aquaponics and hydroponics explains how each growing method supplies plants with their nutrients.
