This powder combines bat guano with dried blood to feed vegetables, flowers and fruit trees as they root. Dosed at 10 g per litre of grow medium, it works for about eight weeks, with no mineral additive, and is approved for organic farming under the European regulation.

The summary

  • Formula: a powdered organic nitrogen fertiliser, bat guano and dried blood, NP 3-12.
  • Dosage: 10 g per litre of grow medium, mixed in when potting on or preparing the bed.
  • Release: an action that starts quickly and lasts about eight weeks.
  • Outside the system: for soil crops growing alongside the system, never in the fish water.

A guano-based base powder for rooting crops in pots or trays

Guanodiff Classic's by Guano Diffusion is an organic powdered fertiliser made from bat guano and dried blood, NP 3-12, suitable for organic growing. Mixed at 10 g per litre into an unfertilised potting compost such as ZeroMix, it feeds for eight weeks. Available from 500 g to 20 kg, it is meant for soil and pots, never for the water your fish live in.

Guano Diffusion's Guanodiff Classic's is a powdered base fertiliser, the kind you mix into the grow medium before planting rather than into the watering water. Its label classes it among the nitrogen-containing organic fertilisers under standard NF U 42-001-2: 3% nitrogen, entirely of organic origin, and 12% phosphoric anhydride. These two elements come from two raw materials, bat guano and dried blood, with no mineral additive, and the whole product can be used in organic farming.

🦇 Two materials, two roles

Bat guano supplies most of the phosphorus, the element that supports root formation and the establishment of a young plant. Dried blood provides the nitrogen, in an organic form that soil life gradually turns into assimilable nitrates. It is this conversion that explains the duration of action of about eight weeks: the fertiliser does not dissolve all at once at the first watering, it is released as the bacteria in the grow medium go to work, faster in warm weather than in cool weather. If your grow medium is alive, enriched for example with worm compost or Insect Frass, it therefore gets more out of it than a sterile compost does.

A fertiliser-free potting compost for dosing yourself

A compost that is already enriched contains its own reserve, and adding guano to it amounts to doubling the dose. To get the full benefit of this base fertiliser, start from a light compost whose conductivity stays below 1.1 mS/cm, such as the ZeroMix fertiliser-free compost from the same brand, then set the amount yourself at 10 g per litre. You then know exactly what your plants receive, and the guano does not have to compete with the reserve of an already enriched bag.

🧪 Reading the NP 3-12 analysis

The two figures you read on the label are expressed in grams per 100 g of product. A kilo of Guanodiff Classic's therefore contains 30 g of nitrogen and 120 g of phosphorus pentoxide, the form in which the regulations express phosphorus; worked back to phosphorus alone, that comes to a little over 5%. At a rate of 10 g per litre, each litre of your potting compost therefore receives 0.3 g of nitrogen and 1.2 g of phosphorus pentoxide. For large volumes, the same fertiliser is available in a 6.2 kg bucket. This ratio, four times richer in phosphorus than in nitrogen, makes this fertiliser a starter and rooting boost rather than a foliar feed. With only 0.8% potassium, it also leaves crops that fruit over a long period, such as tomatoes, peppers or squashes, needing a potash-rich fertiliser later on to support flowering and fruit swelling. It does, however, supply plenty of calcium, 19%, along with a little magnesium, iron and manganese, which helps to prevent blossom end rot in tomatoes grown in poor compost.

5 L pot

50 g of powder mixed into the compost, for one tomato or pepper plant.

10 L tub

100 g of powder, so a 500 g sachet covers five pots of this size.

40 L planter

400 g spread through the compost before planting tomatoes, peppers or herbs.

300 L tank

A vegetable bed measuring one metre by one metre and 30 cm deep needs 3 kg.

Never in the fish water

Do not pour this powder into a pond, an aquarium or the circuit of an aquaponic system. As it breaks down in the water, the dried blood and guano release ammonium and use up the oxygen the fish need, whereas the total ammonia nitrogen of a rearing tank must stay below 1 mg per litre. In the garden, also keep chickens, rabbits and other animals away from treated areas for 21 days, as with any fertiliser containing dried blood.

🪴 Mix, plant, hand over

The dose of 10 g per litre of grow medium is mixed in when preparing the pot or tray, right at the start of growth. The safest approach is to pour the powder into the dry compost, stir until it disappears into the mass, then fill the containers and plant. A generous watering just after planting brings the fertiliser into contact with the moisture the micro-organisms need to convert it. Eight weeks later, when the reserve runs out, a liquid growth fertiliser such as Pro Organic Grow takes over with the watering can for long crops, while short crops, such as lettuce or radishes, have often finished their cycle on the initial reserve alone.

🐟 What about aquaponics?

In an aquaponic system, the nitrogen comes from the fish waste, which nitrifying bacteria convert into nitrates in the grow bed. The water in the circuit therefore receives no solid fertiliser of this kind, and this is also true of decoupled aquaponics, where the plant loop is separate from the fish loop: there, the solution is corrected with soluble salts, not with an organic powder intended for soil. Guanodiff Classic, on the other hand, finds its place in the soil-grown crops that often accompany your installation: root vegetables and squashes too bulky for a grow bed, fruit trees in containers, herbs in pots on the terrace. The plants you intend for the system, for their part, are raised in an inert medium and join the grow bed without compost, so as not to introduce anything into the fish water.

🌿 Deficiencies in the system, corrected another way

Aquaponic water feeds lettuces and herbs well, but it is often short of iron, potassium and calcium for demanding crops. Iron is corrected with a DTPA chelated iron, at a rate of 2 mg per litre every three weeks or according to symptoms, with no risk to the fish at this dose. Potassium and calcium come in, for their part, when you raise the pH, since nitrification acidifies the water: a potassium-based corrector, such as potassium bicarbonate, raises the pH while supplying potassium, and a calcium-based corrector supplies calcium in the same way. The article on plant deficiencies in aquaponics helps you recognise these shortfalls on the leaves.
