BioBizz Pre-Mix combines organic fertilisers, rock dusts, trace elements and fungi in a single bucket. It is mixed into the potting compost or coco fibre at planting, at a rate of roughly one 5-litre bucket per 100 to 200 litres of grow medium depending on its richness, to produce a growing mix suitable for organic growing.

The summary

  • Formula: a dry organic fertiliser, NPK 3-3-5, which combines organic fertilisers, rock dusts, trace elements and fungi.
  • Proportion: about 5 litres per 100 to 200 litres of compost, depending on the grow medium and the crop.
  • When: at repotting, planting or transplanting, just once in the grow medium.
  • Pond and grow beds: never in the fish water, but for pots, soil beds and seedling compost.
  • Who it is for: those who make their own compost or reuse the soil from their beds.
  • Liquid follow-up: Bio-Grow at watering time when the reserve runs out on a long crop.

A ready-to-use base fertiliser to enrich a neutral compost or revive old potting soil

BioBizz Pre-Mix is a dry organic fertiliser, NPK 3-3-5, to be mixed into the grow medium when potting on. One 5-litre bucket enriches roughly 100 to 200 litres of grow medium, depending on how rich it is, and then Bio-Grow takes over at watering. As the powder must never enter an aquaponic circuit, the mix is prepared well away from the pond.

Pre-Mix is the dry fertiliser in the BioBizz range, and it is worked into the grow medium rather than added to the watering can. Instead of a single raw material, it combines four families of ingredients: organic fertilisers that supply nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, rock dusts that enrich the mix with minerals, trace elements, and fungi that contribute to soil life. Its analysis is NPK 3-3-5, a balance gentle enough to be incorporated into the compost from planting without burning the roots of the young plants you are setting out.

🪣 A tailor-made potting mix

Its main use is to turn a neutral grow medium into a growing mix. A lightly fertilised compost such as Light-Mix, a coco fibre or a sieved garden soil will take the Pre-Mix when you fill the pots or beds. It can also be used to regenerate soil that has already been used: the soil from last year's tomato bed, depleted by a growing season, regains a nutrient reserve without being replaced in full, which saves you buying and carrying several bags of compost every spring. Pre-Mix is also what fertilises the All-Mix compost from the same range: if you would rather have a rich, ready-made compost, that bag saves you the mixing.

Measure

Allow roughly 5 litres of Pre-Mix for 100 to 200 litres of grow medium, depending on the grow medium and the plants.

Mix

The fertiliser is mixed through the whole mass before filling the pots, for an even distribution.

Plant

The plants or young shoots go straight into the mix prepared in this way.

Water

A generous first watering brings the fungi and fertilisers into contact with moisture.

Combining Pre-Mix with homemade worm compost

Pre-Mix works best combined with good-quality worm castings, which bring a population of micro-organisms to the mix. If you garden in pots all year round, a Worm Café wormery produces this compost from your kitchen peelings, on two trays that are harvested one after the other. At every repotting you then have fresh soil improver to blend into the Pre-Mix, and the liquid collected at the tap can be used as a supplementary feed for your potted plants.

🐟 Outside the fish circuit

In an aquaponic system, it is the fish that feed the plants: their ammonium waste is converted into nitrates by the bacteria in the filter, then absorbed by the roots. A dry organic fertiliser therefore has no place in the pond water or in a grow bed of clay pebbles, because its decomposition in a closed circuit would use up oxygen, cloud the water and add a load that the filter is not sized to handle. The Pre-Mix, on the other hand, has its place around the system: in the pots and soil beds set up next to the greenhouse, and in the compost used to germinate seedlings before they are transferred. The article which fertiliser to use in aquaponics explains what can enter the fish circuit.

Keep the open bucket away from the pond

A handful of powder tipped into a fish tank breaks down in the water and overloads the biological filter. So open the bucket and prepare your mixes away from the pond and the grow beds, then rinse your hands and tools before putting them back into the system. Also keep the bucket out of the reach of children, as the powder must not be swallowed.

Seedlings raised in compost enriched with Pre-Mix should not be transplanted as they are into an aquaponic system. Instead, sow them in rock wool cubes or coir fibre cubes, then rinse them in clean water before placing them in the grow bed, so that no trace of compost or fertiliser reaches the fish water. If you are looking to correct the nutrition of the system itself, the most common deficiencies in aquaponics concern iron, potassium and calcium, and they are corrected with fish-safe products: a DTPA chelated iron, applied at around 2 mg/L every three weeks, and a buffering potassium or calcium salt, which also raises a pH that has dropped below 6.4.

🔀 Decoupled aquaponics

Another option is to separate plant cultivation from fish rearing. In a so-called decoupled aquaponic system, the water from the pond feeds an independent growing loop, from which it does not return to the fish. You can then adjust the nutrition there with more freedom, without putting the stock at risk. Pre-Mix remains a grow medium fertiliser, however, and this hydroponic loop calls for fully soluble mineral solutions. Its place in an aquaponic setup is therefore the potted crops around it, the herbs on the terrace and the preparation of the plugs destined for the vegetable garden.

⚖️ Dosing according to the crop

The dose is adjusted to the starting grow medium, to the length of the crop and to its appetite, and the guidelines that follow remain orders of magnitude: a compost that is already fertilised needs less than coco coir or exhausted soil. The low dose, 5 litres for 200 litres of grow medium, suits young plants and undemanding crops such as lettuces, radishes and herbs. The high dose, 5 litres for 100 litres, is for fruiting vegetables set up for a whole season in a large pot, such as tomatoes, peppers or aubergines. The 5-litre tub is thus enough to prepare 100 to 200 litres of grow medium, that is several large containers, or ten 10-litre pots at the high dose and twenty at the low dose, and each 10-litre pot then receives 250 to 500 ml of Pre-Mix.

An organic fertiliser does not dissolve like a mineral fertiliser. Its elements become available as soil life breaks down the organic matter, which explains the presence of fungi in the formula and the value of a grow medium kept moist. For a short crop, this reserve may be enough until harvest. For a tomato kept from May to October, you take over mid-season with a liquid growth fertiliser, the Bio-Grow from the same range or the Pro Organic Grow, when the foliage starts to turn pale.

📦 The bucket and how to store it

The 5-litre bucket weighs 2.5 kg and can be resealed between uses, which keeps the powder dry from one potting-on to the next. Pre-Mix is also available in a 25-litre sack, a size designed for those who prepare large volumes of compost. It is certified as an input for organic farming by Control Union and by Soil Association, so you can use it in a vegetable garden run to organic standards. Store the bucket sealed in a dry place, away from damp, which would make the powder cake.
