Floating probiotic pellets for koi, from the spring restart through to autumn

Vitality Plus koi food by Aquatic Science is a floating pellet with 36.5% protein and 8.7% fat, enriched with probiotics. Its intermediate content means it can be fed as soon as the water rises above roughly 12 °C, from the spring restart through to autumn. It comes in three pellet sizes, from 2 to 7 mm, for fish from 7 cm.

Vitality Plus is the everyday food in the Aquatic Science range for koi. The manufacturer presents it as a complete, highly nutritious and easily digestible food, used by koi breeders for its results in growth, colour and above all the vitality of the fish. With 36.5% protein and 8.7% fat, it sits between the all-season food and the Champion Growth growth food: rich enough to help a young koi grow, moderate enough to be fed from the spring restart through to autumn without overloading the filtration.

🦠 Probiotics in every pellet

What sets this formula apart is the addition of probiotics, beneficial micro-organisms that colonise the fish's gut. A balanced gut flora digests better, leaves less room for unwanted bacteria and supports natural defences, which the manufacturer sums up with the words immunity and vitality. The benefit is clearest at times when a koi is weakened: at the spring restart, when the water warms up and the immune system gets going more slowly than the parasites, after new fish have been introduced, or after a spell of hot weather. A feed does not cure an established disease, but it helps a healthy fish stay that way.

🌡️ A wide operating range

Thanks to its intermediate protein level, this feed covers most of the season. It is suitable as soon as the water rises above around 12 °C, when your koi start begging for food again, and right through to autumn, when they slow down of their own accord. In the height of summer, above 20 °C, you can keep it as the staple feed or alternate it with Champion Growth to boost growth. When the water drops back below 12 °C, Wheat Germ Sinking takes over, as it is more digestible in cold water. As with the whole range, the manufacturer recommends giving several small meals a day rather than a single one.

A thermometer and a test kit are enough

A floating thermometer, read in the morning, tells you when to open this bag in spring and when to change formula in autumn. An ammonium test confirms that the ration stays within what your filtration can process. The other formulas in the range can be found in the pond fish food collection.

Small, 2 to 3 mm

From 7 cm of fish length: young koi, goldfish, ponds where several generations live together.

Medium, 4 to 5 mm

From 15 cm: the most common size for an adult population of uniform size.

Large, 6 to 7 mm

From 25 cm: large koi, which take one pellet at a time instead of swallowing ten.

📏 Choosing the gauge and format

Choose the pellet size according to the smallest fish in the pond. A pellet that is too large keeps them away from the meal without any visible sign, since the larger koi simply eat for everyone. Unlike Champion Growth, Vitality Plus is available in small, which makes it the natural food for this year's young koi. When choosing the pack size, think in terms of time: an opened bag should be used up within the season. The 0.5 kg pouch is for testing acceptance, the 2 kg bag suits a few fish, and the 5 and 9.5 kg bags offer a much lower price per kilo, provided your pond gets through them before winter.

The mistakes that cancel out the effect

Do not rely on probiotics to make up for poor water quality: high ammonium and nitrite weaken a fish faster than any feed can strengthen it. Do not leave an open bag in the sun or in damp conditions, which degrade vitamins and micro-organisms. And do not feed this product to ruminants or to any other animal species, as it contains fishmeal.

🐟 Vitality Plus in aquaponics

In aquaponics, this feed is a good compromise between fish growth and nitrogen load. With 36.5% protein, 100 g fed releases around 3.8 g of ammoniacal nitrogen per day, barely more than the all-season feed and noticeably less than Champion Growth. That is enough to nourish leafy crops and herbs, without requiring an oversized biofilter. The small size is useful in systems where you raise fry or young koi to grow them on before the pond. As for the plants, a steady ration is better than a heavy one: consistent meals give a stable nitrogen supply, which the crops absorb without sudden swings. Increase the ration in weekly steps in spring, monitoring ammonium and nitrites, and let the biofilter catch up with the increase before the next step. The article on the nitrogen cycle shows how this ration becomes fertiliser for your plants.

Which pack size of Vitality Plus to choose

It is the same food in all four cases: only the period covered, the pellet sizes and the price per kilo change. The durations assume a ration of 2% of body weight per day.

From 0.5 to 9.5 kg: which one will you finish in a season? An opened bag loses vitamins and probiotics over time. The right size is the one your fish will finish before winter.

Estimate the daily ration for your fish

Enter the total biomass of your fish, that is, the sum of their weights. The calculation uses 1% of the biomass per day, a common guideline for water at 15 to 18 °C. Double it above 20 °C, and adjust using the 5-minute rule.

The 1% factor is an industry benchmark for adult fish, consistent with the 1.5 to 2% of biomass published by the FAO for Cyprinus carpio in warm water. Young fish eat more. The overriding rule remains to give only what disappears in under 5 minutes.
