The summary

  • Box contents: two bottles or two cans of the same volume, Hydro A and Hydro B.
  • Ratio: 2.5 ml of A then 2.5 ml of B per litre of water at most.
  • Inert media: clay pebbles, rock wool, NFT or deep water culture.
  • Pond water: only in a decoupled loop, never in the fish circuit.
  • Progression: from 14 to 25 ml of each part per 10 litres over six weeks.
  • How far a pair goes: 400 litres of solution with the two one-litre bottles.

A complete nutrient solution for lettuces, herbs and fruiting vegetables grown without soil

Plagron's Hydro A and B is a two-part mineral fertiliser, in pairs of 1, 5 or 10 litres, for hydroponics on an inert grow medium. A then B are poured in equal parts, 2.5 ml of each per litre at most. In aquaponics, only a decoupled loop that never returns to the fish will accept it.

In hydroponics, the roots find nothing other than what you put in the water: every element must be there, in a soluble form that can be absorbed immediately. A complete fertiliser in a single bottle runs into a chemical difficulty, because calcium and sulphates and phosphates, brought together at high concentration, precipitate into insoluble deposits. Hydro A and B, from the Dutch brand Plagron, therefore splits the nutrition into two concentrates that only meet once diluted in your sump tank.

Hydro A

This bottle is rated NPK 3-0-1 and supplies calcium, 5.9% expressed as oxide, with 0.4% magnesia.

Hydro B

This bottle has an NPK of 1-3-6, with 1.4% magnesia, all of the phosphorus and the greater part of the potassium.

Together, they form a complete mineral nutrition, usable from growth through to flowering. All the trace elements are chelated, meaning wrapped in a molecule that keeps them soluble and available to the plant. The formula is highly concentrated, at 1 in 400, so a pair of one-litre bottles makes up to 400 litres of solution, and it does not crystallise in the sump tank. It already has some effect on the pH and conductivity of the solution, but tap water varies too much from one region to another to skip a measurement each time you prepare it.

🧪 Preparing the nutrient solution

The maximum dose is 2.5 ml of Hydro A per litre of water, a dilution of 1 in 400, followed by the same quantity of Hydro B, at each feed. Shake the bottles, pour A into the water and mix, then pour in B, because the two parts must never be mixed undiluted. Next, measure the solution: the target pH is 5.5 to 6.5 and is corrected with pH Min or pH+, while the conductivity, read with the pH and EC meter, is adjusted according to the species and its stage.

Dose A and B together, in equal parts

Hydro A alone or Hydro B alone does not feed the plant properly: always dose both in a one-to-one ratio. Do not add any organic product to the sump tank, as it can turn the solution within 48 hours. Hydro A is classified as hazardous to the eyes: wear goggles when pouring the concentrate, and rinse at length with clean water in case of a splash. Clean the tank before each new preparation, and store the containers out of the reach of children.

Feeding a salad tower beside the pond

If you want to grow lettuce and herbs hydroponically alongside your aquaponic system, a hydroponic grow tower for 20 to 44 plants runs on recirculation, which is exactly the mode Hydro A and B is formulated for. Its sump tank receives a solution that you dose more weakly than for tomatoes, since leafy vegetables are content with moderate conductivity. You harvest upwards, over a small footprint, without ever mixing this water with the fish water.

Your lettuces and herbs are happy with a more dilute solution than tomatoes in full production, and the conductivity to aim for depends on the species and its stage rather than on a single value. A prepared solution keeps for four days in a clean reservoir stirred by a pump, as long as you keep an eye on its pH, which rises slowly. After that, replace it rather than topping it up, because plants do not take up all of its elements at the same rate.

💧 The systems that accept it

Hydro A and B suits all inert grow media, clay pebbles, rockwool or perlite, as well as systems with no grow medium. It works equally well as run-to-waste or recirculating, which covers vertical towers, NFT channels, flood-and-drain tables and RDWC systems, where several pots share a single oxygenated sump tank. With run-to-waste, each watering receives fresh solution; with recirculation, the same sump tank circulates for several days, which is why it matters to replace it after four days.

🐟 Hydroponics and decoupled aquaponics

In a coupled aquaponic system, the fish water circulates in a loop between the pond, the filter and the plants. Hydro A and B is a mineral fertiliser formulated for water without fish, so you should never add it to this circuit. The water of a well-run pond already supplies the plants with the nitrogen from the fish waste, in the form of nitrates, and most of the other elements.

Deficiencies in a coupled system mostly concern iron, potassium and calcium, because fish feed contains little of them. They are corrected with products that are safe for livestock: a DTPA chelated iron at around 2 mg/L roughly every three weeks, potassium bicarbonate or calcium carbonate, which raise both the pH and the carbonate hardness. These additions should be decided after a water test, not by the calendar.

In a decoupled aquaponic system, water from the pond feeds a recirculating plant loop that never returns to the fish. This loop works like a hydroponic system, and Hydro A and B has its place there: its potassium-rich bottle B and its calcium-rich bottle A supply exactly what the fish water provides least. You start from the pond water and add a fraction of the dose, in equal parts, until you reach the target conductivity. The article on the difference between aquaponics and hydroponics explains why the two systems are not fed in the same way.

📈 Increasing the dose

The 100% HYDRO growing schedule increases the dose each week rather than fixing it from the outset. In the first week, you add 14 ml of Hydro A and 14 ml of Hydro B per 10 litres, then 16, 18, 20 and 22 ml, before reaching 25 ml of each from the sixth week, which is the maximum dose of 2.5 ml per litre. The conductivity follows the same movement, from 1.4 to 2.3 mS/cm, tap water included, and never exceeds 3.0. For lettuces or herbs that stay in leaf, you repeat the second-week dose for as long as the crop lasts. The schedule combines Hydro Roots at 10 ml per 10 litres for the first five weeks, and Green Sensation from the sixth week on fruiting vegetables. Euro Pebbles clay pebbles serve as the growing medium in this programme, rinsed before being put in place. If you start from osmosed water or rainwater, CalMag Pro first restores its calcium and magnesium, at 0.75 ml per litre, before Hydro A.
