JBL Pronovo AutoFood automatic fish food dispenser
This automatic feeder feeds your aquarium fish at a set time while you are away. The AutoFood dispenses 1 to 3 mm granules up to 4 times a day, and the MULTI model also takes flakes, with up to 6 feeds.
The summary
- What it is: a feeder that pushes a measured portion of food into your aquarium, at the times you programme.
- Which to choose: the AutoFood for 1 to 3 mm pellets, the MULTI as soon as your fish eat flakes.
- Which capacity: 125 ml in the hopper, 375 ml with a 250 ml food tub screwed on top.
- For peace of mind while away: a test setting a week before you leave and fresh alkaline batteries.
- In aquaponics: a regular supply, which gives the filter bacteria the same amount of nitrogen every day.
- How it arrives: as a small parcel to your door, with its mounting brackets.
Scheduled meals for the aquarium, in granules or flakes, while you are away
During an absence of 2 weeks, feeding the fish is often the trickiest task to hand over to someone else. This automatic feeder clips onto the edge of the tank and, at the times you have chosen, drops a measured dose of food onto the water surface. You set the number of meals and the amount for each just once, and the device repeats this programme every day, over a weekend or over a holiday, without a neighbour having to measure out the food for you.
🔩 The dosing mechanism
The AutoFood moves the feed along with an auger screw, which pushes a constant quantity towards the outlet at each meal. This mechanism suits 1 to 3 mm pellets, which flow steadily; flakes, sticks and tablets jam in it. You can programme up to 4 meals a day, with a separate quantity for each. The hopper holds 125 ml, and the ring supplied lets you screw a 250 ml tub of PRONOVO feed on top, which brings the reserve up to 375 ml. The unit comes with 3 AA batteries, and a fitting lets you connect it to an air pump to keep the feed dry.
The MULTI model solves the problem of flakes, which pack down in an ordinary auger. It comes with 3 interchangeable augers, one for flakes, one for pellets and one for very fine pellets, down to 3 mm. You can programme up to 6 meals a day, from 1 to 10 portions each, and a sensor checks the reserve before each feed and lights an indicator when it runs low. Its outlet closes after every meal, which keeps the humidity of the tank out of the hopper, and it runs on 3 AA batteries or on a 5 V USB-C adaptor.
Fixing
Two suction-cup brackets or an adjustable clamp hold the unit on the edge of the tank, with the outlet positioned above the area where your fish feed.
Trial dose
One button triggers a feed by hand, which lets you check the set portion before you leave.
Dry food
The AutoFood's air fitting and the MULTI's flap stop moisture from the tank making the food stick together.
Programme retained
The times and doses stay in memory when you switch the unit off, but not when you remove the batteries.
New alkaline batteries before every departure
Put in fresh alkaline batteries the day before you go away, rather than relying on those from your last trip. Zinc-carbon batteries and most rechargeable cells give a false reading on the battery indicator and can cut out the device without warning. On the MULTI, the USB-C cable does not recharge the batteries, so they keep draining even when the device is plugged in.
Check the ammonium after 3 days of feeding
The ammonium NH4 drop water test tells you whether the programmed ration exceeds what your filter can absorb. Take a measurement after 3 days of automatic feeding, before you go away for good. If the value has not risen compared with your usual reading, the dose is right; if it rises, reduce the portion by one notch and run the test again, which saves you from coming home to degraded water.
The choice between the two models therefore depends on the food your fish eat. If you feed pellets only, the AutoFood is enough and comes with its batteries. As soon as flakes enter the ration, or if you want more than 4 meals a day, the MULTI is the right model. For two different foods served separately, the two-chamber feeder keeps each food in its own hopper, and for large pond pellets, the 6-litre solar feeder is designed for outdoor use.
🗓️ Going away for 1 to 2 weeks
The settings should be prepared a week before departure, while you are still around to observe. Programme the times, trigger a meal by hand, then check whether everything is eaten within 2 to 3 minutes. A dose that is too generous sinks to the bottom, where it decomposes and degrades the water while nobody is watching. During an absence, a slightly short ration is therefore preferable to one that is too generous.
To estimate how long it will last, fill the reservoir, note its level, then let the programme run for a few days: the drop you see gives you the actual consumption at your setting. If the 125 ml reserve does not cover the whole absence, the 250 ml tub screwed on in its place triples it. When you get back, check the water before resuming the usual ration, and the guide to aquaponics and summer holidays covers the other adjustments to make before you leave.
🌱 Regular feeding in aquaponics
In an aquaponics system, the feed supplied is the source of nitrogen: the fish excrete ammonium, which the filter bacteria convert into nitrite and then nitrate for your plants, as explained in the guide to the nitrogen cycle. The bacterial colonies adjust to the average load they receive. A regular supply, spread over several small meals, gives them the same quantity to process each day, whereas a skipped day followed by a double ration causes an ammonium spike that the filter handles poorly.
The feed calculation starts from the cultivated area: allow roughly 40 to 50 g of feed per day per square metre of leafy vegetables, and 50 to 80 g for fruiting vegetables. A small system of 0.5 m² of lettuces therefore receives 20 to 25 g per day, which the MULTI divides into 4 to 6 meals. Weigh 10 manual portions on a kitchen scale to find the weight of one portion at your setting, then adjust the number of portions per meal. The 3 mm limit suits goldfish, guppies and young fish; adult carp or trout need larger pellets.
📦 What each box contains
Both models arrive with their suction-cup brackets and their clamp. The AutoFood comes with its 3 AA batteries and the adapter ring for the 250 ml tub, so it is ready to use as soon as you open the box. The MULTI comes with its 3 dosing screws and runs on 3 AA batteries or on a 5 V USB-C adapter.
