Telescopic pond net, 40x35 or 50x43 cm
This pond net has a telescopic handle from 95 to 160 cm and comes in two net sizes, 40x35 or 50x43 cm.
There is a choice of two meshes: the coarse 4 mm mesh lets the water run through and holds fish and leaves without slowing your movement, while the fine 0.9 mm mesh catches fry, small fish and fine debris.
The summary
- What you receive: a 40x35 or 50x43 cm net, with coarse 4 mm mesh or fine 0.9 mm mesh, fitted to a telescopic handle.
- What it changes: you work standing on the bank, without having to step into the water.
- The reach: the handle adjusts from 95 to 160 cm, giving a total extended length of 195 or 203 cm, depending on the net.
- Which size: choose the net according to the size of your fish, not the size of the pond.
- Autumn leaves: it removes them from the surface before they sink to the bottom.
- Shipping: a long item, shipped with the handle retracted in a dedicated parcel.
Telescopic-handle landing net for working a pond from the bank
On a pond, the first difficulty is reaching the fish. This handle extends from 95 to 160 cm, bringing the whole to nearly 2 m and letting you work standing up, feet dry, above water that you can only partly see.
🎣 The frame and the net
The aluminium frame is 1.1 cm thick and holds the net at four points, with a fixing mounted from the inside. Fixed this way, the net does not tear off if it catches on a stone of the pond edge, which matters on a tool you sweep along the margins. The 4 mm mesh lets the water run through, which makes the net lighter when you lift it full, at arm's length. The 0.9 mm fine-mesh version, with a black net, also retains fry, small fish and fine debris, at the cost of a net that is slightly slower to move through the water.
40 x 35 cm
This net suits a pond of a few square metres and medium-sized fish.
50 x 43 cm
This net suits a large pond, adult fish, or a lot of leaves to skim off.
Common handle
Both sizes share the same telescopic handle, 95 to 160 cm.
The size is chosen according to your fish rather than your pond. The small net is enough for a pond of a few square metres stocked with goldfish or medium-sized fish, and it is quicker to manoeuvre between marginal plants. The large net is worthwhile as soon as your fish grow longer than your hand, and it picks up more leaves with each sweep. The mesh is then chosen according to the smallest inhabitant of the pond: a coarse mesh is enough for fully grown fish and for skimming leaves, while a fine mesh is essential as soon as this year's fry or young goldfish swim with the adults.
The extended handle is not meant to be used as a lever
A telescopic handle holds a net, not a hauled weight. Bring the fish towards you by shortening the handle rather than lifting at full extension, and never scrape the bottom with it, or you risk bending the frame.
Bags for moving the sorted fish
When the autumn sort-out means removing a few fish to give away or move to another pond, the 20 x 50 cm transport bags take over from the landing net. Filled with pond water and a pocket of air, they keep the fish in its own water during the journey. You then acclimatise it by placing the sealed bag on the surface of the destination water, which equalises the temperatures before release.
Extend the handle before you approach the water: adjusting a section while balancing over the pond is the surest way of dropping everything into it. Then work with the net submerged and let the fish swim into it rather than chasing it, since every sudden sweep stirs up the water and makes you lose sight of the fish. After use, rinse the net in clean water and leave the whole thing to dry, handle retracted, before putting it away.
🍂 Leaves before the bottom
In autumn, this net is as much for leaves as for fish. Every leaf that reaches the bottom rots there, uses up oxygen and releases nutrients that will feed next spring's algae. Run the net over the surface once a week while the leaves are falling, as long as they are still floating, and you will have done most of the work. The sludge that has already settled is a job for the sludge vacuum, and the article on solutions for green water explains the link between these deposits and algae.
🧊 The autumn sort-out in aquaponics
On a pond connected to grow beds, this net is used for one specific job: taking the fish out to count them, weigh them or remove a few before winter. This is the moment when you adjust the fish load to what your plants still consume, since the fish's appetite and nitrogen output fall sharply with temperature. The guide to preparing an aquaponic system for autumn gives the temperatures at which to reduce, then stop, feeding.
🪣 Keeping the fish out of the pond
Between the net and its return to the pond, the fish waits in a lidded bucket filled with water taken from the pond itself, which spares it any difference in temperature or water quality. Place the bucket in the shade, next to you, before you begin, and put the lid back on: a disturbed pond fish can jump out of an open container. Do not leave any fish in it for more than a few minutes, and work in small groups rather than cramming several adult fish into the same bucket.

Aquarium or pond, two different worlds
A pond net cannot be handled in a tank, and an aquarium net reaches nothing outdoors.
