Wide-mesh nylon net, from 8 to 20 cm, for adult fish
A wide-mesh net lets the water pass through the netting instead of pushing it ahead. The net therefore moves faster and more quietly towards the fish, which shortens the capture. The Amtra one combines a soft nylon net, which is gentle on the fins, with a twisted handle ending in a loop, handy for hanging it near the tank. You can use it in freshwater and in saltwater aquariums.
A bag of tank water for the transfer
Out of the water, a fish's gills dry out quickly. If you are moving it to another tank, prepare a transport bag filled with water from the aquarium before the capture: the fish goes from the net into the water within a few seconds, without any change in temperature.
📏 Choosing the net size
An adult fish turns around in the net, and a net that is too narrow lets it jump over the frame. So choose a net clearly wider than the fish you want to take out. The 8 cm net slips between plants and into the corners of a small tank, the 10 and 12 cm nets suit most fish in a living-room aquarium, and the 20 cm one is for the largest fish as well as for skimming the surface. For shrimp or fry, whose legs catch in a wide mesh, choose a fine-mesh net instead.
🌱 In aquaponics
In aquaponics, the net is used first of all to catch a fish: to look at it closely, move it from one tank to another or distribute the fish better between your tanks. It is also handy for scooping out fallen plant leaves and uneaten food, or for quickly removing a dead fish, whose decomposition releases ammonia. The guide to the nitrogen cycle in aquaponics explains how this ammonia then becomes nitrite, and then nitrate.
