Lotus Nelumbo Ying Ying
The Ying Ying lotus bears double yellow flowers of 10 to 15 cm on a plant of 50 to 60 cm. Hardy, it grows in a 20-litre pot, under 15 to 20 cm of water, in full sun.
The rhizome is dispatched from 1 April to 15 June. Outside this period, your order is recorded as a pre-order for the following spring.
The summary
- The flower: double and yellow, 10 to 15 cm across.
- What double means: more than 50 petals, with the centre largely hidden.
- The real size: 50 to 60 cm above the water, in a 20-litre pot.
- Rhizome or seeds: two ways of getting a yellow lotus.
Small hardy lotus with double yellow flowers, for a 20-litre pot and pond
Ying Ying is a small Chinese lotus with double yellow flowers, 10 to 15 cm across, held 50 to 60 cm above the water. Its 20 to 30 cm foliage makes it suited to a 20-litre pot or the edge of a small pond, rather than a tabletop bowl.
Like other hardy lotuses, Ying Ying is neither a tropical plant nor a delicate one: it withstands frost as well as a hardy water lily does, with more vigour. Give it a spot in full sun, at least 6 hours a day to flower, a large round container filled with clay-rich soil, and a water depth of 15 to 20 cm above that soil. The rhizome is laid flat on the soil, wedged with a stone so that it does not float, then the pot is filled with water straight away: the rhizome stays dormant until the water has reached 20 °C, the temperature at which it starts into growth.
Leaves of 30 cm take up a lot of room
Allow for the spread of the foliage before placing this lotus on a narrow terrace. Its leaves reach 20 to 30 cm in diameter and stand up on their stalks, so the plant takes up a volume and not just a patch of water surface. A pot placed against a wall or in a passageway quickly ends up cramped, and moving a container full of wet soil in the middle of the season damages the stalks.
🔢 Single, semi-double, double
Nurserymen classify lotus flowers by their number of petals, and this class describes what you will see at the centre of the open flower. A single flower reveals the crown of stamens and the receptacle, a semi-double still lets you glimpse them, while a double flower covers them with extra petals. Ying Ying belongs to this last class, which gives it a full, rounded corolla whose heart remains largely hidden.
The single flower
It has fewer than 20 or 25 petals, depending on the scale used.
The semi-double
It bears 20 to 50 petals and still lets its centre show.
The double
It has more than 50 petals and covers almost all of the stamens.
This cultivar
It is classed as double, with a 10 to 15 cm flower.
The yellow of Ying Ying is deeper at the heart of the flower and fades towards the outer petals, which lean towards pale yellow. Flowering runs from June to August, and each flower, which lasts 3 to 4 days, gives way to a new bud for as long as the soil in the pot stays nourished. You cut off the faded flowers together with their stalk, unless you are keeping a seed pod for autumn decoration, and the plant stays tidy until the end of the season.
A 20-litre pot is fed every spring
Plan on the fertiliser for aquatic plants along with the rhizome, because a 20-litre pot holds only a limited reserve for such a free-flowering plant. A lotus needs two to three times as much as a water lily: allow 6 to 9 tablets, pushed into the soil around the rhizome without touching it, at planting and again every spring. Buried in the soil, they feed the roots without enriching the pond water.
📏 The space a tub lotus needs
At 50 to 60 cm tall, the Ying Ying falls into the class of small lotuses, above the bowl lotuses. A round 20 litre pot will hold it for 2 to 3 years; beyond that, the rhizome has filled the whole volume, and you either divide it or transfer the entire root ball to a larger container, around 150 litres. The water depth is measured from the surface of the soil to the surface of the water, never from the bottom, so in a deeper pond the pot is placed on a support set at the correct height.
🍂 The end of the season at the pond
From April to August, the lotus absorbs a large share of the water's nitrates and phosphates. From September, it draws its reserves back into the rhizome and this uptake drops sharply, which leaves the filter alone to cope with the fish load. The leaves then turn yellow and fall onto the water: in a stocked pond, you remove them as they come, before they decompose and load the water with organic matter. The article on growing lotus in aquaponics quantifies this seasonal role and explains how to size the filtration.
✂️ Dividing in March
Division is done in March, while the plant is dormant, when the pot has gone 2 or 3 seasons untouched. Lay the pot on its side to empty it: the rhizomes run along the wall and come free easily. Cut the chain of tubers 3 or 4 cm from a node, keeping 2 or 3 tubers at the end, then replant this piece in fresh soil. Handle it without breaking the nodes or the growing tip, otherwise it risks rotting. Any surplus pieces can fill other pots, or the edge of a pond alongside hardy aquatic plants.
