📐 The space it needs

A plant of this size should be grown in a container of at least 50 cm in diameter, submerged under 30 to 45 cm of water. Restrict the pot and you will end up with foliage but no flowers, as the rhizome fills whatever space it is given and blooms in proportion. Bear in mind the height and wind exposure too, a 1.80 m stem carrying a 30 cm bloom will lie flat on an open, exposed pond. Warmth during soaking, fertiliser afterwards

A seedling heat mat keeps the water in the soaking glass at 20 °C in spring, providing the warmth that germination requires. From the second season onwards, push aquatic plant fertiliser tablets into the grow medium of the bed to feed a rhizome that flowers in proportion to the space it occupies. With a plant of this size, it is the nutrition that makes the difference between three blooms and a dozen.

A cultivar does not come true from seed

These seeds come from a horticultural cultivar, and a cultivar seed does not faithfully reproduce the parent plant it came from. Expect genuine variability in colour, number of petal rows, and vigour from one seedling to the next, which is a good reason to sow several rather than just one. A plant you are happy with can then be propagated by dividing the rhizome in spring, and that is the only way to obtain a true copy.

The schedule is governed by water temperature, not by calendar dates. Soaking begins indoors as soon as you can maintain 20 °C in a glass of water, often in March or April, and transfer to the pond waits until the outdoor water reaches around twenty degrees, which rarely happens before mid-May at our latitudes. A seedling started too early will simply stall in cold water, and you will have gained nothing over the season. Flowering on established plants runs from July through to early autumn.

🌼 Year after year

The first season builds the rhizome and produces leaves, often only a few, and modest in size. The second sees the large parasol-shaped leaves appear and, on a well-positioned, well-fed plant, the first flowers. It is from the third season onwards that this cultivar really comes into its own, with flower stems reaching their full height and a succession of blooms over several weeks. There is no point in forcing growth during the first two years, since flowering depends primarily on the volume of rhizome accumulated, and this is precisely why the diameter of the container matters more than the fertiliser.

🧺 Repotting and dividing

A lotus should be repotted every two to three years, in early spring, before growth resumes. Remove the root ball, rinse the rhizome gently under water to clear it of clay, and identify the segments carrying an intact terminal bud, as this is what will regenerate the plant. Snap or cut between two nodes, never through a bud, and replant one segment per container, laying it horizontally under 2 cm of grow medium. A rhizome left too long in the same pot will eventually coil back on itself and graze the wall, resulting in a whole season without flowers.

Each seedling produces a unique plant. A named variety is normally propagated by rhizome division, which replicates the parent plant exactly. A seedling, on the other hand, recombines genetically and produces flowers that are similar but never identical: colour and petal count vary from one plant to the next.

What you need to know

File the correct end. A lotus seed has a small knob on one side and a hollow on the other: it is the knob that you file down. The other end houses the embryo, and filing that end will destroy the seed.
Change the water in the glass every two days, removing the seeds by hand. In warm, well-lit water, cloudiness sets in within forty-eight hours and causes the seeds to rot before they can sprout.
Do not fill the tank with water immediately after potting. A few centimetres is enough, and the level should only rise in line with leaf growth. A young shoot submerged under 30 cm of water will exhaust itself before reaching the light.
Choose the largest container you can carry when full. The rhizome spreads horizontally and flowering follows the distance it travels: it is the diameter of the pot, not the variety, that limits most garden lotus.
Allow for wind exposure. Flower stems 150 cm above a container placed on an exposed terrace will end up flattened: position the container against a wall or choose a heavier model.
Sow several seeds. A named variety will produce plants that are similar but all different, and you can then keep the one you prefer.
