Three EHEIM filter media: SUBSTRAT, made of highly porous sintered glass, offers 450 m² per litre to the filter's bacteria; bioMECH traps particles while also housing bacteria; Synth wool polishes the water as the final stage.

SUBSTRAT and bioMECH come in 1, 2 or 5 L and can be reused after rinsing; the wool is sold in a 2 L bag.

The summary

A durable shelter for the bacteria that purify the water

EHEIM SUBSTRAT filter media, made of highly porous sintered glass, houses the bacteria that purify freshwater, with around 450 m² of colonisable surface area per litre. The bioMECH from the same manufacturer traps particles and also houses bacteria, in freshwater and in seawater alike. Synth filter wool, in a 2 L bag, polishes the water as the final stage.

In a filter, it is not the sponges or the stones that clean the water, but the bacteria that settle in them. They convert the ammonia released by your fish into nitrite, then into nitrate, which is far less toxic. The more surface area they have to attach to, the more pollution your filter can process. EHEIM's SUBSTRAT and bioMECH media give them that surface in materials that last for years, and the Synth filter wool completes the setup by trapping the finest particles.

🧱 Three media, three roles

The SUBSTRAT is made of highly porous sintered glass, a material riddled with microscopic cavities that offers around 450 m² of colonisable surface per litre. It is a purely biological media, designed for freshwater, to be placed in the part of the filter where the water arrives already free of coarse particles. One litre weighs around 830 g, which helps you check that your filter basket will support it.

bioMECH combines two functions. Its shape creates pockets that trap both coarse and fine particles, like a mechanical medium, while its fine pores house bacteria. It is neutral for pH, has no effect on hardness, and can be used in freshwater and in seawater. Place it at the head of the filter, or on its own if your filter has only one or two baskets.

The Synth wool is a fine synthetic wool, supplied in a 2-litre bag. Placed as the final stage, it catches the particles that the other media let through and makes the water clearer. Unlike SUBSTRAT and bioMECH, it does not serve as a lasting home for bacteria: it is replaced as soon as it becomes clogged, rather than washed, with no risk to the colony established in the other baskets.

Seed a new medium with live bacteria

A brand-new filter medium takes several weeks to colonise on its own. If you are setting up a new aquarium or fitting a new filter, the EasyStart starter bacteria poured into the tank seed the GROW MEDIUM and the bioMECH from the moment it is filled. Nitrification therefore becomes established faster, and ammonia and nitrite stay better under control during the first few weeks.

No more than a third of the mass at a time

Replacing all the biological media at once wipes out the bacterial colony and causes an ammonia spike that is dangerous for your fish. Renew no more than a third at a time, a few weeks apart, and add the new media alongside the old rather than in its place.

The surface area of a filter medium cannot be seen: a litre of grow medium looks like a pile of small pale pieces, but each one is riddled with pores where bacteria settle. This is what sets it apart from simple gravel, of which only the outer surface is colonised. Flow rate matters too, because water passing slowly through the medium gives the bacteria more time to act, provided it stays well oxygenated. A clogged filter, on the other hand, lets the water bypass the media, which is why it pays to rinse the mechanical stage before it becomes blocked. To monitor the start-up, a nitrite test tells you when the colony is handling the whole load.

🔧 Setting up and maintenance

Rinse the new media in tank water before installing it, to remove any dust. In a three-basket external filter fitted to a 250-litre aquarium, you can place 1 litre of bioMECH in the first basket, 2 litres of SUBSTRAT in the second and Synth wool in the last, which makes up a complete filtration setup. SUBSTRAT and bioMECH can be washed and reused: a gentle rinse in water taken from the tank, never in chlorinated tap water, protects the bacteria.

Multi-basket filter

The bioMECH goes first, then the SUBSTRAT, and the wadding last.

Small filter

The bioMECH alone handles both functions.

Highly biological filtration

The SUBSTRAT provides 450 m² per litre.

Large filter

The 5 L sizes fill large grow baskets.

These media last for years. The bioMECH, which also traps particles, is rinsed at every filter clean, whereas the SUBSTRAT, protected by the preceding stages, can stay in place for several months without attention. Choose the size according to your filter baskets: 1 litre for a small filter, 2 litres for a medium filter, 5 litres for large filters or to equip several tanks.

🌱 In aquaponics

In aquaponics, biological filtration is the heart of the system, since it is what converts the fish waste into nitrate for the plants. A high-surface-area medium such as SUBSTRAT increases the nitrifying capacity of a small-volume filter, which is especially useful in indoor systems where space is limited. The article on the nitrogen cycle in aquaponics explains how this bacterial colony becomes established and what you should measure during start-up.
