Gutter, lid and level tube to extend a GrowStream system

This growing chamber is the basic building block of a GrowStream hydroponic system: a double-walled channel closed by a perforated lid, supplied with its level tube, seals and three end plugs for the side caps. It comes in a 1 m length for 5 plants and a 2 m length for 10 plants. You can add it to a 10 or 20-plant channel system to extend it, or assemble several chambers around your own reservoir to build an installation made to your own measurements.

🌊 The principle of the chamber

The nutrient solution enters the chamber through the feed manifold, flows along the channel in contact with the roots, then leaves through the 50 mm level tube, which acts as an overflow. Because this tube sets the water height, a film of solution remains permanently at the bottom of the profile, so the roots have a reserve even if the pump stops. The return to the tank is by gravity, and the fall of the water in the tube oxygenates it on the way. The channel measures 17.5 cm wide by 13.5 cm high overall, about 18 x 14.7 cm with its lid, which leaves the roots of a tomato or a cucumber room to develop.

The gutter

The double-wall profile, white on the outside, shields the solution from light and cushions the temperature swings of the day.

The lid

It has 5 holes per metre, each taking an 8 cm basket, and it can be removed for maintenance.

The level tube

This 50 mm tube sets the solution height in the chamber and sends the excess back to the reservoir.

The seals and caps

The seals make the pass-throughs watertight, and the 3 plugs close the side covers that are not connected.

📏 Extending an existing system

The 10-plant system is built around two 1 m channels fed by a 950 L/h pump, the same one that runs the four channels of the 20-plant model. You can therefore add one or two 1 m channels to it without changing the pump, provided you open an extra outlet on the manifold for each of them. The reservoir deserves more attention than the pump, since the 20-plant model works with a 150 L tank where the 10-plant model makes do with 45 L. Beyond 15 plants, you should therefore plan for a larger reservoir, otherwise the level drops too quickly in hot weather and the pH changes from one day to the next. The 2 m channel, for its part, corresponds to the gutters of the 40-plant models, which run on a 1,350 L/h pump.

Allow one manifold outlet for each chamber added

Each added chamber receives its own solution inlet, and the original manifold only has as many as the system has channels. A 20 mm ribbed tee creates the branch, and a few metres of 18 x 22 mm flexible pipe connect it to the new chamber. Ordered at the same time as the chamber, they allow you to fill it with water on the day it arrives.

A tilted chamber drains on one side

Set the chamber perfectly level on its supports before filling it with water. A tilted channel accumulates the solution at its low end, while the baskets on the high side end up above the water film and dry out as soon as the pump stops. Check the level with a spirit level along the length and across the width, and repeat after filling, because the weight of the water settles the supports.

🧩 Grow chamber or NFT channel

An NFT channel, such as the 100 x 80 mm channel in the range, circulates a film of solution a few millimetres deep along a steady slope, and it takes 5 cm pots. The chamber works differently, since it keeps a layer of water set by its level tube and offers a cross-section roughly three times larger. It therefore suits plants with heavy root development better, while the NFT channel is well suited to lettuces and herbs in large numbers. Finally, the chamber connects to the 3/4-inch threaded outlets of the GrowStream system, which makes it the part to choose if you are expanding that system rather than adding an NFT line.

🐟 A fish chamber in aquaponics

In aquaponics, the chamber receives water from the fish tank instead of a mineral solution, and it works like a slow-flow growing channel. Because the water moves slowly through it, the suspended solids leaving the tank settle there and eventually clog the bottom of the channel and the holes in the manifold. So fit mechanical filtration and a biological filter between the fish and the chamber, so that it receives only clear water that has already been nitrified. In this set-up, the solution no longer needs replacing every 2 to 3 weeks, since the fish continuously supply the elements the plants take up. The pH, on the other hand, is set as a compromise around 7, higher than the hydroponics range, and the guide on pH regulation shows you how to hold it.

🔧 Assembly and maintenance

The chamber rests on two or more supports, such as trestles or a frame made of 30 x 30 mm square tube, above the reservoir or beside it. You push the level tube into its seal, close off with the plugs any covers your setup does not use, then connect the solution inlet. An hour of running with clear water then lets you spot any leak and check that the chamber fills up to the level tube, before you pour in the nutrient solution. Between two crops, the lid comes off and the channel can be brushed with clear water, since a deposit of salts or dead roots feeds biofilm. Rinsing with diluted white vinegar, followed by a thorough rinse with water, is enough to dissolve limescale. The level tube seals can be replaced individually, which saves you from changing the whole chamber for a simple leak.
