Floating pearls for peak season, for koi and goldfish, in water at 20 to 30 °C
In summer, pond water often stays above 20 °C for weeks on end, and this is the period when your koi and goldfish grow the most. Their digestion is then running at full capacity, so they absorb more protein than in spring or autumn. These floating pearls are formulated for these warm months, in water at 20 to 30 °C, with a ratio of 4 parts protein to 1 part fat, the highest of the seasonal foods.
☀️ A full-season ration
The analysis declares 32% crude protein, with 8% fat, 3% fibre and 8% ash. In warm water, your fish grow fastest of the year and their protein requirement is at its highest, which justifies a richer recipe than in the shoulder seasons. Rather than one large meal, give 2 to 4 small portions a day between 20 and 27 °C, each one the amount your fish eat in a few minutes. The pearls float, so you can spot any surplus and remove it before it sinks.
🦐 Krill, shrimp and astaxanthin
The recipe combines maize, salmon, soya and rice meal with three ingredients of aquatic or animal origin, quantified on the label: 5% krill, 5% shrimp and 3% silkworm. Spirulina, algae meal and wheat germ complete the formula. Each kilo also supplies 100 mg of astaxanthin, the orange-red pigment that enhances the red and orange of your kois and goldfish, as well as lysine, methionine and vitamins A, D3, E and C. Colours deepen over several weeks of regular feeding, as the pigment becomes fixed.
Krill, 5%
Krill is a small marine crustacean, rich in protein and natural pigments.
Shrimp, 5%
It complements the supply of animal protein and carotenoids.
Silkworm, 3%
Silkworms provide a protein of animal origin, derived from insects.
Spirulina and algae
They add plant pigments to the ration.
Lighter meals during a heatwave
The warmer the water, the less dissolved oxygen it contains: a litre of water at 30 °C holds about 7.5 mg, compared with 10 mg at 15 °C. Above 28 °C, therefore, reduce the ration to one meal every other day and give it in the cool hours of the morning. A fish that stays at the surface gulping air is signalling a lack of oxygen, and it is the aeration that needs to be increased before feeding.
Aerate the pond during the warm months
In summer, the fish's digestion and the decomposition of leftovers use up oxygen just when warm water holds the least. The complete pond aerator diffuses air at the bottom of the pond continuously, including at night, when the algae stop producing oxygen and consume it. It lets you keep a full-season ration without exposing your fish to a drop in oxygen in the early morning.
🌱 Summer in an aquaponic system
In aquaponics, summer is the season when everything runs at full tilt: nitrifying bacteria work best between 17 and 34 °C, and fruiting plants take up the most nutrients. The amount of feed you give your fish determines how many nutrients are available to the crops, so a protein-rich feed, given regularly, supports tomatoes, peppers and courgettes. Remember too that evaporation concentrates the salts dissolved in the system water and calls for frequent top-ups, as explained in the article on looking after an aquaponic system in summer.
Suppose your pond is home to 5 koi of about 1 kg each. At 24 °C, a daily ration of around 1.5% of their body weight comes to 75 g per day, spread over 3 small meals of 25 g. The 2 kg bag then lasts almost a month. In a small goldfish pond, the 340 g tub lasts much longer, as the ration comes to just a few grams per meal.
The 340 g tub suits a small goldfish pond, while the resealable 1 kg and 2 kg bags suit koi ponds and aquaponic systems. In summer more than at any other time of year, keep the packaging closed, dry and in the shade, as heat degrades the vitamins and fats. When the water temperature drops back below 20 °C at the end of summer, you switch back to a food for the in-between seasons, such as the all-season food for koi and goldfish.
