CANNA Rhizotonic is a liquid root stimulator based on an extract of the brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum. It supports the rooting of seedlings, cuttings and repotted plants, and helps the plant get through a period of stress. It is dosed at 40 ml per 10 litres in the first week, then more lightly, on all grow media.

The summary

  • The extract: a plant-based additive, a concentrate of the brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum from the North Atlantic.
  • Three doses: 40 ml per 10 L at the start, 20 ml during growth, 5 ml during flowering.
  • The right moments: sowing, taking cuttings, repotting, or after a spell of heat or drought.
  • Growing media and application: soil, coir fibre, rock wool, clay pebbles, by watering or spraying.
  • On the system side: for the nursery and for cuttings prepared separately, not in the fish water.
  • The right bottle: 250 ml for a family vegetable garden, 5 or 10 L for a greenhouse or a nursery.

A seaweed extract that helps seedlings, cuttings and repotted plants establish their roots

CANNA Rhizotonic is a liquid root stimulator made from brown seaweed extract for seedlings, cuttings and repotting. It is dosed at 40 ml per 10 litres in the first week, then 20 ml during growth and 5 ml during flowering, together with your usual fertiliser and CANNAZYM. It must never go into the water of an aquaponic pond.

A plant that has just been transplanted, or a cutting that has not yet grown roots, lives off its reserves. Until the root system has developed, it absorbs water and nutrients poorly, and the slightest excess of heat makes it wilt. Rhizotonic is the CANNA additive for this stage: you add it to the watering water or to the nutrient solution to support root formation, from the first days of a seedling right up to the point where a plant is settled in its final pot.

🌊 A brown seaweed concentrate

The formula is based on a concentrated extract of Ascophyllum nodosum, a brown seaweed from the North Atlantic widely used in horticulture. This plant-based extract contains organic matter, vitamins and minerals, but in quantities too small to feed the plant: once diluted, it barely raises the conductivity of the solution. It is therefore not a complete fertiliser, and it is added to the usual nutrition without replacing it, whatever the grow medium, soil, coco coir, rockwool or clay pebbles, and whatever the watering method.

Its role is to support the development of the root zone, so that the plant absorbs better the water and nutrients supplied by its fertiliser. It also helps a plant get through a spell of heat or drought, during which the roots suffer first, and it supports the activity of the beneficial micro-organisms in the grow medium. At sowing time, it softens the coat of hard-coated seeds, which makes it easier for the first root to emerge. These effects play out during the first weeks of growing, hence a strong dose at the start, then reduced as the roots establish themselves.

Starting out

The first week receives 40 ml per 10 litres, for seedlings, cuttings and repotted plants.

Growth

The dose goes up to 20 ml per 10 litres while the plant is building its foliage.

Flowering

A dose of 5 ml per 10 litres is enough once the roots are well established.

Go back to 40 ml at every repotting or cutting

At every potting-on or transplanting into open ground, go back to the starting dose for a week, as this is when the roots have the most to rebuild. If you propagate basil, mint or tomatoes from cuttings, a 27-site Hydrocloner cloning machine keeps the stems in a well-aerated water mist, and a few millilitres of Rhizotonic in its sump tank help the first roots to emerge. You thus get rooted cuttings without compost, ready to join a pot or a grow basket.

Measure the dose rather than forcing it

An overdose harms the grow medium and the plant alike, and a young cutting is more sensitive to it than an adult plant. Measure each application with a graduated measuring cup, shake the bottle before use, then keep it closed, away from light and frost, out of reach of children.

The most telling uses are those of the gardener: a tray of tomato seedlings in rockwool cubes or in seed compost, basil or mint cuttings, courgette plants transplanted after a cool night. In hydroponics, you add Rhizotonic to the solution after the fertiliser, then adjust the pH last, and in a closed circuit as with drip irrigation the solution is renewed every 5 to 7 days. The product can also be sprayed on the foliage, preferably outside the hot hours, when the roots of a freshly transplanted plant cannot yet supply enough water.

🐟 Algae and the aquaponic system

Seaweed has a good reputation in aquaponics: the FAO manual cites seaweed infusions rinsed free of salt as a source of potassium and iron, two elements that are often lacking in a system fed only by fish feed. Rhizotonic is nonetheless a commercial preparation dosed for root development in watering and hydroponics: so you do not pour it into the pond or into the grow bed of a coupled system. It would in any case supply very little potassium at these doses, and an iron deficiency in a system is more reliably corrected with a DTPA chelated iron, at about 2 mg/L every three weeks.

Its real place, in an aquaponic installation, is upstream of the circuit. You prepare seedlings and cuttings in a separate nursery, watered with water containing Rhizotonic, then rinse the plugs with clean water before placing them in the baskets or in the clay pebbles, at least two weeks after the first true leaves appear. In a decoupled aquaponics system, where the water from the pond feeds a growing loop that does not return to the fish, the additive can join the plant solution just as in hydroponics. Pots set around the greenhouse benefit from it too, with no risk at all to the fish.

🧪 The order of preparation

The order of preparation matters, because each addition changes the pH slightly. Fill the sump tank with water, add the base fertiliser, then Rhizotonic and your other additives, stirring between each product, and measure the pH only at the end so that you correct it once. The extract stays stable in the diluted solution, so a sump tank prepared for the week keeps its effectiveness until it is refreshed. For a 5-litre watering can, the starting dose is 20 ml and the growth dose is 10 ml.

The moments when the additive is most useful are easy to spot: sowing hard-seeded plants such as peppers or squash, a batch of cuttings, repotting, transplanting into the garden, or a plant that has suffered from a scorching day or a missed watering. In these situations, go back for a week to 40 ml per 10 litres, then return to the dose for the current phase. Outside these stages, a well-rooted plant growing normally is happy with the maintenance dose.

📦 Choosing the size

The 250 ml bottle makes up 62 litres of irrigation water at the starting dose, enough to support the seedlings and cuttings of a family vegetable garden. The 500 ml and 1 litre sizes cover a full season in pots or in hydroponics, while the 5 and 10 litre containers are intended for greenhouses, nurseries and large sump tanks. The product keeps for two years in its sealed bottle, stored in a dark place and protected from frost, so you can choose a slightly larger size without risk of losing it.
