The summary

  • Two ingredients: a Breton brown seaweed powder enriched with spores of Rhizophagus mycorrhizal fungi.
  • Planting dose: 10 g per litre of grow medium, or 1 kg per 100 litres.
  • When to use it: right from planting out, at planting or transplanting.
  • For which plants: vegetables, fruit trees, vines, ornamental shrubs, plants and flowers.
  • Aquaponic system: for crops grown in soil around the system, never in the fish water.
  • Pack sizes: from the 500 g sachet for a few pots to the 10 kg bucket for 1,000 litres of grow medium.

Powder of Breton brown seaweed and mycorrhizal spores, to be mixed into the grow medium

Guano Diffusion's Alguamycor combines brown algae, the mycorrhiza Glomus intraradices and the bacterium Azospirillum. At 10 g per litre of grow medium at planting, together with Insect Frass, it helps roots to establish. From the 500 g sachet to the 10 kg bucket, it serves the soil, never the fish circuit.

Alguamycor combines two ingredients that act at root level. The first is a powder of brown algae harvested in Brittany, rich in polysaccharides and amino acids. The second is a selected strain of endomycorrhizal fungus, Glomus intraradices, now classified in the genus Rhizophagus, at 300 propagules per gram. A soil bacterium, Azospirillum, completes the blend, with at least 25 million units per gram: it lives in contact with the roots, where it encourages their branching. The blend contains no mineral additives and is suitable for organic farming. You incorporate it into the grow medium when the plant is put in the ground, right where its roots will develop.

🍄 The role of mycorrhizae

A mycorrhiza is an association between a root and a soil fungus. Endomycorrhizal fungi penetrate the cells of the root, then spread a network of very fine filaments through the soil, which extends the root system and explores a volume of soil that the roots alone could not reach. In exchange for the sugars the plant supplies, these fungi help it take up water and mineral nutrients. For the association to form, the spores must be in contact with young roots, which is why the product is mixed into the planting medium rather than spread on the surface.

Vegetable garden

Mixed into the compost of tomato, squash or pepper plants at the time of transplanting into open ground or a container.

Orchard and vineyard

Mixed into the planting soil of a fruit tree or a grapevine, in contact with the roots.

Ornamental

Added to the grow medium of trees, shrubs and flower beds when they are planted.

Potted plants

Mixed into potting compost, at the same dose of 10 g per litre of grow medium.

⚖️ The dose at planting

The reference dose is 10 g per litre of grow medium, which comes to 1 kg per 100 litres. For a 10-litre pot, you therefore mix 100 g of powder into the compost, and for a raised vegetable bed holding 100 litres of soil, 1 kg. The seaweed also supplies a little potassium (4%), calcium and nitrogen, along with polysaccharides such as alginate and laminarin, which retain moisture around the roots of your plants. Spread the powder evenly through the volume where the roots will grow, then set the plant in place and water. The product is used from the moment of planting: when transplanting seedlings, planting a tree or repotting a container plant. To prepare your plants before they go in, the article on successful spring seedlings details the steps through to transplanting.

Planting with insect frass

If you are planting tomatoes, squash or a young fruit tree, mix the same brand's Insect Frass into the same grow medium, at 5 g per litre. The insect guano feeds the soil bacteria while the mycorrhizae associate with the roots, so the plant settles into living soil from the very first watering. In poor soil, also add a share of worm compost, which provides the organic matter the fungi need.

Mix in where it meets the roots

The spores only work in contact with living roots. A powder left on the surface, or applied to a soil where nothing is planted, forms no association. Always mix the product into the whole planting volume.

🐟 Its place around an aquaponic system

Alguamycor is a product for planting into soil: its algae powder and spores are mixed into a planting medium, where the fungi find soil to explore around the roots. It should therefore not be poured into the fish tank, nor into a grow bed fed by their water. In an aquaponic system, it is the fish waste, converted by the bacteria in the biofilter, that feeds the plants, and anything added to this circuit has to be considered in terms of the fish and the bacteria.

The product does, however, have its place in everything that grows in soil alongside the system: the open-ground vegetable garden around the greenhouse, tubs of tomatoes or squashes, strawberries in planters and the fruit trees in the garden. The plants intended for the system, meanwhile, are prepared separately, in an inert medium such as rock wool or coconut fibre, then join the grow beds at least two weeks after their first true leaves appear, as the FAO recommends. Their root ball thus stays clean and does not load the water in the tanks with organic matter.

Deficiencies in the water of an aquaponic system are corrected with products made for it. Iron is most often the one that runs short: a DTPA chelated iron is added at around 2 mg per litre roughly every 3 weeks. To top up potassium and calcium, you alternate small doses of calcium hydroxide and potash, or use potassium bicarbonate, which also brings the pH back towards 7, the compromise where fish, bacteria and plants meet. The leaves often point to the element at fault, and the article on deficiencies in aquaponics helps you read them.

📦 Choosing the right pack size

Choose the size according to the volume of grow medium to be treated, as each kilogram covers 100 litres. The 500 g sachet is enough for around fifty litres, which means a few planters or a batch of seedling pots. The 1 kg and 2 kg sachets suit a family vegetable garden or a few fruit trees, while the 3 to 10 kg buckets are intended for large plantings, orchards or seedling production, with 1,000 litres of grow medium treated by the 10 kg bucket. Close the sachet or bucket firmly between uses, and store it somewhere dry, cool and out of direct sunlight, as the ultraviolet rays damage the spores and bacteria.
