The summary

  • The product: a complete mineral fertiliser in a single bottle, macro and trace elements included.
  • The preparation: 40 ml per 10 litres, for a conductivity of 0.7 to 1.3 mS/cm including the water.
  • The media: rockwool cubes, coco or peat plugs, sponges and seedling composts.
  • In aquaponics: in the nursery, kept separate, before the plants are installed in the system, never in the fish water.

The first food for young plants, from seedling cubes through to transplanting

CANNA Start is a complete mineral fertiliser for seedlings and cuttings, in cubes, plugs or seed compost. It is dosed at 40 ml per 10 litres until transplanting, after which the growth fertiliser takes over. Available in 500 ml and 1 L bottles. In aquaponics, it stays in the nursery, never in contact with the fish.

A germinated seed lives for a few days on its own reserves. As soon as the first true leaves unfurl, the seedling needs nutrients, but at a low concentration that its young roots can tolerate without stress. CANNA Start is formulated for this stage, from the first leaves through to transplanting, for seedlings and for cuttings that have already rooted alike. You use it to bring on your lettuces, herbs and fruiting vegetables in their cubes or plugs, before moving them into their final grow medium.

You might think it is enough to dilute an ordinary growth fertiliser, but this shortcut does not give the same result: the proportions between the elements are not those a young seedling needs, and dilution often causes yellowing of the young leaves. CANNA Start supplies all the macro-elements and trace elements in a single bottle, in high-quality forms and chelates that are directly and fully available to the plant. There is therefore no part A or part B to mix, which makes it easier for you to dose small volumes of watering water.

One part

No A and B to mix: just one bottle to dose.

Complete

All the macronutrients and trace elements, with plant-available chelates.

Soft

A solution of 0.7 to 1.3 mS/cm, suited to young roots.

Versatile

Rockwool, coco or peat plugs, seedling composts.

💧 Preparing the solution

Shake the bottle, fill your sump tank or watering can with water, then dissolve 40 ml of CANNA Start per 10 litres, a dilution of 1:250. The conductivity of the solution should fall between 0.7 and 1.3 mS/cm, a value that includes the conductivity of the starting water: mineral-rich tap water puts the solution at the top of the range, while rainwater or reverse-osmosis water puts it at the bottom. Finally, adjust the pH to between 5.2 and 6.2 depending on the growing medium you are using, and water generously enough that at least 10% of the solution runs out through the bottom, which stops salts building up around the young roots.

Measuring tap water before preparing the solution

The conductivity range takes into account the mineral content of your water, which varies greatly from one area to another. A pocket pH and EC tester first gives you the value of the water on its own, then that of the prepared solution. You then know whether the standard dose is suitable or whether a very hard water calls for slightly reducing the fertiliser.

CANNA Start is suitable for rockwool cubes, coco or pressed peat plugs, germination cubes, sponges and most seed composts. Water your growing media with the solution as soon as the first true leaves appear, then each time they begin to dry out, until transplanting. The plants then move on to the growth fertiliser designed for their final grow medium: compost, coco fibre or hydroponics. The range also includes a root stimulator, Rhizotonic, to strengthen rooting during this period.

Do not use it in a closed circuit or in a cloning unit

CANNA Start is not designed for systems that recirculate the solution, nor for misting cloners. Keep it for seedling trays watered by hand or for run-to-waste drip irrigation, and switch to a suitable hydroponic fertiliser as soon as the plants move into a closed-loop system.

🐟 The nursery of an aquaponic system

In an aquaponic system, the plants feed on fish waste converted by the bacteria in the filter, and nothing should be added to this water without a dose established for a fish stock. CANNA Start, a concentrated mineral fertiliser, therefore stays in the nursery, away from the circuit. As it is not intended for recirculating systems, it is not used in the growing loop of a decoupled installation either. Its place is the seedling tray where you raise your plants before they enter the system, in cubes or sponges.

Preferably choose a medium that can be placed as it is in a net pot, such as peat germination sponges or rockwool, then rinse it in clear water at the time of transfer so that the nursery solution does not reach the pond. The FAO aquaponics manual also recommends staggering your sowings, starting small batches at regular intervals, so that you always have plants ready to replace those you harvest. The article on spring seedlings in aquaponics offers a suitable calendar.

🧴 Container sizes and storage

At 4 ml per litre, the 500 ml bottle makes up 125 litres of solution and the one-litre bottle makes up 250. A seed tray uses only a few litres a week, so the small size lasts several sowing seasons for a family vegetable garden or a small aquaponic setup. The litre suits a nursery that produces plants continuously, with staggered sowings.

Keep the bottle closed, in a dark place protected from frost, out of the reach of children. Light, and ultraviolet in particular, breaks down the iron chelates in the solution, which is why a bottle left in the sun gradually loses some of its effectiveness. The polyethylene bottle, free of PVC and cadmium, can be recycled with plastic packaging.
