Glass propagation vase with cork stopper, 10 or 12 cm
This clear glass vase holds a cutting in water through its pierced cork stopper, with no pump or power socket, following the Kratky method. It comes in 6.5 x 10 and 6.5 x 12 cm, singly or in a set, and the glass lets you see the roots from the very first rootlet.
The summary
- What you receive: 1, 2 or 4 clear glass vases, each closed with a pierced cork stopper that holds the stem.
- Which size: 6.5 x 10 cm for a short cutting, 6.5 x 12 cm for a longer stem, or the duo of both heights.
- What you see: your roots through the glass, from the first rootlet to the full tuft.
- What it asks of you: no pump, no power socket, no grow medium, just clean water changed every week.
Clear glass and pierced cork stopper, for a cutting that roots in water
This clear glass propagation vase holds a stem in water thanks to its pierced cork stopper, and it lets you see what is happening beneath the surface. It comes in two heights, 6.5 x 10 cm and 6.5 x 12 cm, sold singly, in packs of 2 or 4, or as a pair. The same object therefore serves two purposes that do not get in each other's way: a cutting you can watch root, and a decorative piece for a desk or shelf.
The cork takes the place of a stake. You slip the stem into the central hole, the cork holds it upright, and only the base sits in the water while the leaves stay dry above the neck. Houseplants with flexible stems suit it best, such as pothos, climbing philodendron, wandering Jew or ivy, and a stem of mint or basil bought in a bunch will take root again in about ten days at room temperature. The list grows longer if you follow what to plant through the seasons. Because the glass is transparent, you can also watch the first rootlet emerge, then see the water turn cloudy when a stem base starts to rot, so you can change it before the cutting is lost.
💧 The Kratky method in one idea
This soilless growing method needs no pump and no electricity. You fill it once and never top it up: the level drops as the plant drinks, and it never rises again. Between the lid and the surface, a pocket of humid air opens up and grows wider week by week. The roots divide between these two layers: those that stay in the solution take up water and nutrients there, while those that end up in the humid air thicken and branch to take up oxygen. This division allows a plant to cope without aeration, and the guide to the Kratky method gives the volumes and durations in detail. This principle applies to a stem kept in nutrient solution; a cutting rooting in plain water, by contrast, needs the water changed every week.
📏 Two vase heights
The 10 cm pot
It suits a short cutting, a sprig of mint or a pothos stem with two leaves, and it fits on a narrow windowsill.
The 12 cm vase
Its extra 2 cm leaves more room for roots beneath the stopper, which helps with long stems and cuttings kept for several months.
The pair and the multipacks
The pair brings together one vase of each height, while the packs of 2 or 4 vases of the same size are for starting several stems on the same day.
Starting several stems from the same plant
Not every cutting taken on the same day roots with the same vigour. So take several cuttings from the same plant, stand them in a set of vases side by side and keep the strongest, which saves you starting again from scratch if one cutting fails. Grouped on a shelf, the vases also make an attractive display. If you then keep your cuttings in water for several months, add a very dilute complete hydroponic nutrient solution, since plain water no longer feeds the plant once its reserves are used up.
Keep the glass out of direct sunlight
Clear glass lets light through to the water, and algae develop faster the more sun the vase receives. So place your vase in bright but indirect light, change the water every week and rinse the glass each time, so that the solution stays clear and you can always check the condition of the roots.
