Six or ten independent trays, 72 or 120 cells, with five tools

A germination tray always does the same thing: it keeps the seed warm and moist until it sprouts. This set brings together 6 or 10 of them, and that number makes all the difference, since each tray has its own 12 cells, its own watertight base and its own vented lid, and can be managed independently of the others.

🌱 Multiple trays, multiple sowing dates

A single large tray imposes a single schedule. Every cell is sown on the same day, ventilated on the same day, and transplanted on the same day, yet basil germinates in a matter of days while an aubergine takes twice as long. You end up looking at seeds that have not yet sprouted, or keeping a lid over seedlings that are already stretching. With 19 × 14.5 cm units, each one follows its own timetable: you open the vent on the one that has germinated, leave the others closed, and re-sow in the one that has been emptied.

One variety per tray

Each one follows its own germination pace, without neighbouring seedlings being uncovered too soon or kept covered too long.

Ventilation opens where seedlings have emerged, and remains closed everywhere else.

💧 Bottom watering

The watertight base on which each tray sits is not merely a drip tray, it is where the water enters. You pour a small amount of water into the base, place the tray on top, and capillary action draws moisture up through the grow medium without a drop touching the leaves or the collar. Water pooling on the surface is in fact the entry point for collar rot, which can wipe out entire batches within a few days. After half an hour, empty whatever remains in the base, so that the plug stays moist without ever sitting in water.

Filling the cells without compost

A cell 5.5 cm deep will accept compost, but if your plants are moving on to a channel or a basket, an inert medium transplants far more cleanly. Germination sponge pods sit neatly in the cell and transfer whole, with no growing medium dispersing into the water circuit. And when the room stays cool in late winter, a 20 W heat mat slipped under the trays will bring summer species on by several days.

Ventilation that opens in stages

The first 7 to 14 days are spent under the lid. After that, ventilation should be opened gradually rather than all at once, as seedlings accustomed to saturated air will collapse within hours if uncovered suddenly. Open the vents halfway for 2 or 3 days, then remove the lid entirely. When washing, avoid harsh detergents, as their residues build up at the base of the cells and interfere with subsequent seedlings.

🪴 From the cell to the channel

In aquaponics as in hydroponics, transplanting is the moment when seedlings are most often lost. The depth of 5.5 cm matters more here than the surface area, as it gives the roots time to form a rootball firm enough to survive being moved into a growing basket, rather than falling apart in your hands. The right moment is when the first true leaves appear, before the roots have coiled around the bottom of the cell. Push the plug out from underneath rather than pulling on the stem, it comes out in one piece and the neighbouring cells are left undisturbed.
