Sicce's UV-C Clarifier connects to the circuit of a pump or filter. Its UV-C lamp destroys the microscopic algae that turn the water green and reduces suspended germs, without any chemicals.

It comes in 7, 9 or 13 W, for an aquarium or tank of 100 to 1,000 litres.

The summary

Inline UV-C lamp that destroys the algae in green water, with no chemicals

Water that turns green within a few days is not dirty in the usual sense: it is overrun by single-celled algae in suspension, so small that they pass through every filter foam. Chemical treatments get rid of them for a while, but they return as soon as light and nutrients are available. The Sicce UV-C Clarifier treats your water differently: it passes in front of an ultraviolet lamp that destroys these algae and some of the bacteria and parasites in suspension, without adding anything to the water.

💡 The principle

UV-C radiation, with a wavelength close to 254 nanometres, damages the DNA of the cells it reaches. The exposed algae die, clump together into larger particles and are then caught by the mechanical filter, for example a layer of filter wool. Always place the steriliser on a filtered circuit. The more slowly the water passes the lamp, the longer the exposure and the more effective the treatment, so a moderate flow rate is better than a high one.

A few mistakes come up again and again. Too high a flow rate shortens the exposure time: if the pump exceeds the recommended range, fit a bypass with a tap so that only part of the water goes through the unit. A steriliser placed before the mechanical filter clogs up faster and loses efficiency. Finally, green water does not disappear overnight: allow 1 to 2 weeks of continuous operation for the water to clear, which gives the filter time to catch the destroyed algae.

Lamp switched off during treatment or maintenance

UV-C also destroys some medications and the live bacteria added to the water: switch the unit off during a treatment and for the week following a bacterial seeding. Never look at the lamp while it is lit outside its housing, as UV-C radiation is dangerous to the eyes and skin.

A phosphate test to stop the green coming back

The lamp destroys the algae present, but they come back as long as the water contains enough to feed them. A phosphate test carried out on the tank water and then on the top-up water shows you where this input comes from. You then know whether to reduce the ration or treat the top-up water, and the steriliser only has to maintain water that is already balanced.

🔧 Installation and maintenance

The housing is watertight and can be installed submerged or outside the tank, in any position, in line on the outlet pipe of a pump or external filter. The two threaded fittings take stepped hose tails for 13, 20 or 25 mm pipe: cut off the unneeded steps so as not to restrict the flow. The lamp is protected by a quartz sleeve, a blue indicator light confirms it is working and a safety switch cuts it off when the unit is opened. The cable is 3 m long.

The lamp loses its effectiveness well before it burns out: replace it every year, preferably in spring, before the season when sunlight speeds up algae growth. While you are at it, clean the quartz sleeve with a soft cloth: a deposit of limescale or biofilm blocks a good part of the radiation. If the temperature of the room drops below 0 °C, unplug the unit, drain it and store it somewhere frost-free. The warranty is 2 years, lamp excluded.

📐 Which power rating to choose

Take an indoor aquaponic system with a 350-litre fish tank, filtered by a 600 L/h pump. The 9 W model is suitable: the pump's flow rate falls within its ideal range, and the volume within its bracket. If your 120-litre aquarium is fitted with a small external filter of 400 L/h, the 7 W is enough. The 13 W is meant for large tanks, or for circuits where several tanks share the same water.

7 W

This model treats an aquarium of 100 to 400 L, with a pump of 200 to 500 L/h.

9 W

This model treats a tank of 200 to 600 L, with a pump of 400 to 800 L/h.

13 W

This model treats a tank of 300 to 1,000 L, with a pump of 600 to 1,500 L/h.

Replacement lamp

Change the lamp every year, or after 8,000 hours.

🌱 In aquaponics

In aquaponics, green water deprives plants of some of their nutrients and can clog the grow beds. The steriliser goes on the return from the mechanical filter, before the crops. While a system is starting up, switch it on only once the biological filter is established, because UV-C would destroy the bacteria added to the water to seed it; once they have settled on the media, these bacteria no longer pass in front of the lamp. The guide on cloudy water in aquaponics helps you tell green water from bacterial cloudiness.
