Phosphates feed algae. The JBL PhosEx Pond range removes them from pond water, either with a liquid poured in directly, PhosEx Pond Direct, or with granules placed in the filter, PhosEx Pond Filter.

The summary

Starve the algae of their food

Green water or algae that keep coming back almost always have the same cause: an excess of phosphates. They come from uneaten food, fish waste, dead leaves and sometimes the top-up water. As long as their level stays high, the algae have plenty to feed on, no matter how many treatments you pour in. JBL's PhosEx Pond range tackles this cause by binding the phosphates, without releasing aluminium into the pond water.

Two products meet two different needs. PhosEx Pond Direct is a liquid based on iron chloride, which you pour into the water: it reduces a high phosphate level within 2 to 24 hours. PhosEx Pond Filter comes as granules to be placed in the filter, in the bag supplied, and it stays active for about 3 months. The first corrects an established problem, the second maintains a low level throughout the season.

💧 The liquid, for fast action

Direct is dosed at 40 ml for roughly 800 litres, that is 50 ml per cubic metre: the 250 ml bottle treats 5 m³, the 500 ml one 10 m³ and the 2.5 L container 50 m³. Mix the dose in a plastic watering can filled with pond water, then spread it over the whole surface, avoiding the floating leaves of water lilies. The water takes on a brownish tint that disappears within 2 to 24 hours. As a preventive measure, repeat the application every 6 weeks, from the start of spring to the end of autumn, and after every anti-algae treatment, and switch off the UV-C steriliser during the application. If the carbonate hardness of your water is below 4 °dKH, raise it the evening before with a KH buffer for ponds, to avoid a drop in pH.

A corrosive liquid to be handled with gloves

PhosEx Pond Direct is classified as hazardous: it causes skin burns and serious eye damage, and it can corrode metals. Wear gloves and goggles when diluting it, use a plastic watering can, and do not use it in a stainless steel pond. In a swimming pond, wait 24 hours after application before swimming.

🧱 Pellets, built to last

The Filter suits ponds fitted with a filter. Fill the supplied mesh bag, rinse the granules briefly under running water to remove dust, then place the bag between the filter media, or in the compartment intended for special media, in an area where the water flows slowly: a current that is too fast reduces phosphate removal. The 500 g bucket, equal to 1 litre of granules, suits a pond of up to 5,000 litres and stays active for about 3 months if the pond is neither overstocked nor overfed. The 2.5 kg bucket contains 5 litres of granules, for a pond of about 25,000 litres. The UV-C steriliser can stay switched on.

A phosphate test to know when to act

The PO4 phosphate drop test gives you the level in your water before treatment, then tells you when to replace the granules: that is when the value starts to rise again. You therefore treat when your pond needs it, rather than by the calendar, which also avoids buying product unnecessarily.

The two products work well together. Take a 5 m³ pond that turns green every May: the 250 ml bottle of Direct lowers phosphates within 2 to 24 hours, then the 500 g bucket of Filter, placed in the filter, keeps them low for about 3 months. You measure the phosphates before and after treatment, then once a month, to know when to replace the granules.

Phosphates have several sources, which are worth knowing about if you want to limit them for good. Fish feed contributes the largest share, as any food given in excess ends up in the water. Dead leaves that fall in autumn and decompose on the bottom also release a lot, hence the value of a protective net and a sludge vacuum. Tap water sometimes contains them: a test of your top-up water tells you whether it adds any. Finally, garden fertiliser washed in by rain can reach the pond, so it is best not to spread any near the banks.

🌱 In aquaponics

In aquaponics, phosphates are not something to remove: they are nutrients that the vegetables draw from the water, and stripping phosphorus from a growing system would hold back flowering and fruiting. The PhosEx Pond range is therefore intended for ornamental ponds and fish ponds kept separate from the crops. For green water in a pond, the guide to the 5 solutions for green pond water also covers the methods that do not involve a product.
