These 16 mm barbed fittings join two flexible pipes, either in a straight line with the coupler or at a right angle with the 90° elbow. They are sold in packs of 5 identical pieces, and the pipe clip, which holds a 16 mm pipe against the wall of a tub, in packs of 10 or 25.

They are the ones used on the CultiMate constant-level reservoir, where they connect tubes with a 15 mm inside diameter.

Joiners, notched elbows and clips for building a water circuit in 16 mm flexible pipe

A split pipe, a connection that is too short or a bend that pinches the bore: most small faults in a water circuit are fixed with a fitting. These two barbed pieces have a series of sawtooth ridges on each end, which bite into the wall of the pipe and hold it without glue or clip. You cut, push the pipe on, and the connection is made in a few seconds.

🔗 Connector or elbow

The straight connector, 58 mm long, joins two pipes end to end: it repairs a cracked pipe without replacing it, or extends a run that has become too short. It is moulded in acetal, a hard engineering plastic that resists wear well. The 90° elbow, 44 mm on each side, in polypropylene, turns the circuit at a right angle without crushing the pipe, for example where it passes over the rim of a reservoir.

Designing a custom flexible pipe circuit

These fittings come into their own on a circuit that you design yourself, around a circulation pump or a top-up reservoir. With a coupling and an elbow, you can get round an obstacle without kinking the pipe, which keeps its full bore. Plan on one pack of each, as a circuit almost always has several angles.

Check the internal diameter of the pipe

These fittings are designed for flexible pipe with an internal diameter of 14 to 16 mm. They are not suitable for rigid 16 mm drip-irrigation tubing, where the diameter is measured externally. Measure the inside of your pipe before ordering.

To fit a stiff pipe, dip its end in hot water for 30 seconds: the plastic softens and slides over the ridges more easily. Push it in as far as the central stop of the fitting, twisting it slightly. On a gravity-fed connection or behind a small pump, the ridges are enough to hold the pipe. Behind a powerful pump or on a hard pipe, add a hose clamp on each end.

🐟 In aquaponics

In aquaponics, you use them on low-pressure water connections: topping up a rainwater reservoir, the overflow of a small grow bed, or the return to the pond. Both materials are common plastics for contact with water, and they resist the usual nutrient solutions. For a higher-flow supply to a raised grow bed, the ebb and flow table fitting kit offers suitable bulkhead fittings.

📌 The tube clip

Once the circuit is in place, the pipe clip holds it in place along a tank. This black acetal clip, the same material as the junction, fits into the wall without glue or screws: you drill a 5 mm hole with a drill bit suited to the tank material, push the clip's shank into this hole, then snap the pipe into its collar. It holds a pipe of about 16 mm, such as the 14 x 18 mm clear pipe, and it is what holds the level tube of the 5-plant aeroponic pot upright. A perfectly straight level tube can be read at a glance, while a line fixed to the wall no longer pulls on its fittings.

🧰 A spare parts stock

These fittings are inexpensive and easily misplaced, so a pack of 5 gives you a stock ready for the next repair. They can be removed by cutting the pipe flush with the fitting, then reused once the retained piece has been pushed out. Stored away from direct sunlight, they keep for a long time. Keep some in the garden tool kit, alongside your clips and a craft knife.
