This NFT PVC gutter of 2 metres comes with its end pieces glued on in the factory: drainage on both sides to extend a run, or drainage and cap to terminate it. Its lid is drilled with either 8 holes spaced 250 mm apart or 15 holes spaced 125 mm apart, for 5 cm net pots.

The summary

  • What it is: a 2 m channel through which a thin film of nutrient solution flows beneath the roots.
  • What sets it apart: the hole spacing is chosen at the time of ordering — 125 or 250 mm — with a factory-drilled lid.
  • Two densities: 8 holes spaced 250 mm apart, or 15 holes spaced 125 mm apart.
  • What you grow in it: lettuces, seedlings, and herbs with a small root ball.

2 m growing channel, 100 x 50 mm profile, 8 or 15 positions to choose from.

This 2 m channel with a 100 x 50 mm profile is ordered with a factory-drilled lid at the spacing of your choice, 250 mm or 125 mm, and that choice determines the crops it can support. It arrives with its end caps glued in place and a net pot of 5 cm per position.

📏 8 holes or 15

At 250 mm centre to centre, the lid provides 8 positions over 2 m. Each plant has a quarter of a metre to spread, which suits a butterhead lettuce grown to full size, a batavia, or a basil harvested over several cuts, as these crops need around twenty centimetres between plants. At 125 mm, the same channel holds 15, tightly spaced, the right density for microgreens, lamb's lettuce, rocket, and herbs harvested young.

250 mm spacing

The channel holds 8 positions over 2 m, for plants that spread out and are harvested whole.

125 mm spacing

The channel holds 15 positions over 2 m, for short cycles, harvested young.

5 cm pots

The holes take 5 cm diameter net pots, at both spacings.

A choice that locks in

The lid comes pre-drilled from the factory: the spacing cannot be changed afterwards.

Germinate seedlings separately before filling the channel

A nutrient film technique channel takes rooted seedlings, not seeds. Peat germination pods hold the seed in their central hole and slip whole into a 5 cm net pot as soon as the roots emerge, within 5 to 10 days. This avoids disturbing the root system at transplanting, and each slot in the channel receives only a seedling that has already germinated.

🔩 The end caps and the run

This channel is the one fitted to NFT systems in the range with a 100 x 50 mm profile, providing 15 planting sites on the 60-plant system. Ordering it separately serves two purposes: replacing a warped or cracked channel, and building a run longer than a standard system provides. Its end caps are factory-glued in one of the two configurations available, so there is no sealing for you to do yourself.

The two ends cannot be ordered at random

The channel comes with its end fittings bonded in the configuration you choose: drainage at both ends when you connect several channels end to end, drainage on one side and a blanking plug on the other when the channel terminates the run. Count your end points before confirming your basket, as a bonded fitting cannot be replaced.

💦 Water depth and slope

The profile is 100 mm wide with a height of 50 mm and a 2.5 mm wall thickness. This height limits the volume of water held at the bottom of the channel, and therefore the reserve available to the roots if the pump stops: in a nutrient film system, this reserve is almost zero regardless of the channel length. The useful flow rate remains modest, in the order of 1 to 2 litres per minute per channel, just enough to maintain a continuous film without waterlogging the roots.

The standard slope guideline is approximately 1 cm per metre, meaning 2 cm of drop between the two ends of this channel. Place it on supports close enough together, because two metres loaded with mature plants will sag between two widely spaced supports, and check that water flows freely from the far end before installing any plants. A run made up of several channels should be kept under around twelve metres, as beyond that the plants at the far end receive a solution that is already depleted.

🪴 Preparing for planting

A single channel can be put into production once connected to a reservoir, a pump, and a return line, then stocked with rooted plants in the net pots supplied. Plants are prepared separately, around 3 weeks in advance, on an indoor seedling bench. For a line extension, make sure you also have the support needed to hold the slope, and check the level with clean water after each cleaning: a channel resting at an angle is easiest to spot at that moment, before the plants are placed.

If the water comes from a fish pond, mechanical filtration upstream is essential, as a 50 mm deep profile clogs quickly with suspended matter. The pH is then set first to suit the fish and the nitrifying bacteria, around neutral, and you retain the 250 mm spacing for plants that benefit from the nitrogen supplied by the pond. For long-term crops such as strawberries or bushy herbs, the 80 mm deep channel provides more headroom under the lid.

Two channel profiles

The same principle and the same material. This table compares only the profile and slot density.

The profile is chosen based on the mature plant This channel is the lower of the two, which allows it to accommodate up to 15 plants over 2 m. The questionnaire looks first at the size your plant will reach once fully grown.
