Deep pink miniature lotus, for a patio bowl and small pond

The Huohua dwarf lotus is a miniature lotus designed for patio bowls and small ponds. The plant grows to 20 to 30 cm and bears single flowers in a deep pink shading to red, about 10 cm across. A bowl or pot of 10 to 20 L is enough, under 10 to 20 cm of water. It is supplied as a bare rhizome, dormant.

Huohua is a bowl lotus: the plant rises 20 to 30 cm above the water and bears single flowers of about 10 cm, a deep pink that turns towards red when fully open. Its round leaves measure 10 to 15 cm across, and a bowl or a pot of 10 to 20 L is enough for it. It is a plant you look at up close, and that scale governs its entire cultivation.

The flower

It measures about 10 cm, roughly the diameter of a mature leaf.

The leaf

It reaches 10 to 15 cm and stands above the water on its stalk.

The height

The plant rises 20 to 30 cm above the surface, stalk and flower included.

Water

It covers the soil in the pot over 10 to 20 cm, no more.

📐 A flower as large as the leaf

On the large Nelumbo, leaves of 45 to 90 cm tower over flowers of 20 to 30 cm, and the whole is something you look at from a distance. On your Huohua, the flower is about the size of a mature leaf, so every detail becomes legible at table height. You see the heart of the flower, the crown of stamens and the green receptacle, which a pond lotus shows only to someone leaning over the water. The plant also stays compact below the surface, since a 10 to 20 L bowl holds its entire rhizome for 2 to 3 seasons, until the first division.

👁️ A real centrepiece plant

Place your bowl on a terrace table, a wide ledge or a low wall, at a height where your eye is level with the flowers. In the pond of an aquaponic system, where fish, bacteria and plants share the same water, this size is best set on a submerged ledge rather than on the bottom: placed at the bottom of a pond dug to 50 cm, it would sit under a depth of water far greater than the 10 to 20 cm it needs. The pot is therefore set on a brick, a concrete block or a step, adjusted to leave 10 to 20 cm of water above the soil. The article on growing lotus in aquaponics covers this pairing in detail.

A water lily to shade the patio pond

Pair it with a hardy Gold Medal water lily if your patio pond heats up in the afternoon sun. A lotus's leaves stand up on their stalks and cover almost none of the surface, whereas those of a water lily float flat and genuinely shade the water. The two plants therefore occupy different levels and get in each other's way very little, and your pond receives less direct sun without you losing your lotus flowers at eye level.

A bowl freezes faster than a pond

The rhizome of a hardy lotus overwinters without harm as long as its soil stays wet and frost-free. In a 10 to 20 L bowl, the small volume of water can freeze right to the bottom during a lasting cold spell, and the rhizome then freezes along with its soil. Before the first frosts, therefore, bring the bowl into a cool but frost-free room, or sink the pot into the deep part of a pond until spring.

🔥 A pink that leans towards red

The single flower is a deep pink shading towards red, with a paler base to the petal. This plant is very free-flowering and produces one bloom after another through the summer, each on its own stalk, so a well-exposed bowl stays in flower for several weeks. Full sun is the condition for this flowering: in the shade of a wall or a tree, the foliage grows normally but the buds become scarce. Cut off faded flowers as you go, together with their stalk, if you do not want the seed pods, which otherwise form in the centre of each flower.

🧊 Winter in a bowl

In autumn, the foliage turns yellow and then disappears completely, and nothing is visible above the water until the following spring. The rhizome stays alive in its soil, at rest, and starts growing again by itself when the water warms up in spring. During this dormancy, keep the soil in the pot covered with water or at least waterlogged, because a rhizome that dries out will not regrow. This complete dormancy sets a hardy lotus apart from tropical aquatic plants, which cannot tolerate any cold, and it allows you to keep the same plant from one year to the next.

🪴 The bowl and its soil

The bowl is filled two-thirds full with a fine loamy soil, preferably clay-rich and free of stones, because a light soil floats when the bowl is filled and clouds the water. Choose a round container, where the rhizome follows the wall without butting into a corner, and one of at least 10 L, so that the soil feeds the plant throughout the season. In spring, when the first leaves form, push 2 to 3 tablets of aquatic plant fertiliser into the soil around the rhizome, just once for the season. After 2 to 3 years, the bowl is full: lift the plant in spring, divide the rhizome and replant one section.
