25 cm bar air diffuser, quartz stone
This bar air diffuser of 25 cm, moulded from quartz sand, distributes air from a pump as a curtain of fine bubbles along its entire length. It connects via a 4 mm nozzle to a 4 x 6 mm air pipe.
The summary
- What you receive: a 25.5 cm quartz sand diffuser bar in blue and green.
- The benefit: bubbles distributed along the full length of the tank, rather than concentrated at a single point.
- The fitting: a 4 mm connector for 4 x 6 mm air pipe; pump not included.
- Maintenance: a soak in white vinegar when the bubble output starts to drop.
Diffuser bar for oxygenating a rectangular grow bed, a propagator or an aquarium
A round airstone concentrates bubbles into a single column at the centre of the container, leaving the corners less agitated. A diffuser bar spreads the same airflow across its entire length: laid along the bottom of a rectangular container, it produces a curtain of bubbles that agitates the water from end to end. It is the most suitable shape for the long, shallow containers used in cloning and deep water culture, where you want every root to benefit from aeration.
🫧 A curtain of bubbles
The bar measures 25.5 cm long by 3.7 cm wide and 2.3 cm high. It is moulded from bonded quartz sand, whose bound grains form a network of fine pores along the entire length of the bar. Air enters through a 4 mm spigot at one end, travels along the internal channel, and exits through the entire porous surface as fine bubbles. The finer the bubbles, the greater their surface area for gas exchange with the water.
The bar connects to a 4 mm internal diameter air pipe in silicone or PVC, which you push onto its outlet. A small diaphragm pump delivering 2 to 4 litres of air per minute is sufficient to produce bubbles along its entire length, and a twin-outlet air pump can supply two bars in two separate tanks. Lay the bar flat on the bottom of the tank with the outlet pointing towards the pipe exit, to avoid kinking the pipe.
Replace the original diffuser on the propagator
This diffuser is the original part fitted to the 27-cutting hydroponic propagator, aerating the tank across its full length. Young roots develop in oxygen-rich water, which limits rot. It is the part to keep as a spare when the original diffuser becomes clogged.
Position the pump above the water
Position the air pump above the waterline, or fit a non-return valve on the pipe. When the pump stops, water can otherwise travel back up the pipe and into the pump, causing damage.
🐟 In aquaponics
In a raft grow bed, two or three bars aligned beneath the rafts aerate the roots across the entire growing surface. In a fish pond, the bar is positioned along one wall, where its curtain of bubbles creates a current that circulates the whole body of water. Allow 2 to 3 bars per metre of bed length, connected to a manifold, and check that your pump supplies enough air for all of them.
🧽 Cleaning the diffuser
Over time, limescale from the water and biofilm block some of the pores, causing the bubbles to grow larger and emerge from one side only. Soak the bar for a few hours in white vinegar, then rinse it thoroughly under clean water before putting it back in place. A bar that fails to produce an even curtain of bubbles after two cleans needs replacing, which generally happens after one or two growing seasons.
