The Amtra Air System 100 is an aquarium air pump that pushes air into the water through a fine tube and an air stone. The bubbles stir the surface, where the water exchanges gases with the air in the room: it takes up oxygen and gets rid of the carbon dioxide released by the fish. The pump delivers 96 litres of air per hour through one outlet, for a power consumption of 2 W, in freshwater and in seawater alike. It comes with everything needed to be connected the same day.

🔇 Quiet operation

An air pump works by means of a membrane that vibrates constantly, and it is this vibration that makes noise when it is transmitted to the furniture. The Air System 100 dampens it with a double anti-vibration system, inside the casing and under its feet, which allows you to keep it close to an aquarium set up in a living room or bedroom. Its 2 W consumption amounts to roughly 17.5 kWh over a year of continuous running, about the same as a 10 W LED bulb switched on for 5 hours a day.

🔧 The aeration kit

The kit supplied covers a complete installation. The 4/6 mm pipe connects the pump outlet to the air stone, placed on the bottom of the tank. The non-return valve fits on this pipe, between the pump and the water, so that water can never flow back towards the pump when it stops. The fine-adjustment tap lets you reduce the flow when the bubbles agitate a small tank too much, and the Y fitting splits the air between two stones, for example at either end of an 80 cm aquarium. To adjust two stones separately, the Hobby two-way metal air tap replaces the Y fitting.

The non-return valve, always between the pump and the water

If the pump is placed lower than the water surface, on the floor next to a tank for example, the water can flow back down the pipe when the power is cut and flood the casing. Fit the supplied non-return valve to the pipe, or place the pump on a shelf higher than the water level.

The supplied pipe can be cut to the length you want with scissors, which lets you place the pump on a shelf above the tank without leaving a loop dangling. The air stone eventually clogs: when its bubbles become large and uneven, a replacement stone can be connected to the same 4/6 mm pipe, such as the round blue porous stone. Finally, keep the pump dry and away from dust, which clogs the air inlet.

A second pump for power cuts

A mains-powered air pump stops when the power does. If your tank is heavily stocked, the Amtra Air System 60 UPS backup air pump takes over on battery during a power cut, for up to 20 hours. The two pumps complement each other: one aerates day to day, the other stays on standby for the day the power fails.

🌱 In aquaponics

In an aquaponic system, oxygen is used twice: by the fish, and by the bacteria that convert the ammonia from their waste into nitrates for the plants. An air stone placed in the fish tank keeps the oxygen level stable, even when the water warms up in summer, since warm water holds less oxygen.
