Lotus grows from a rhizome planted in a container filled with heavy soil, under a few centimetres of water, in full sun. Dwarf varieties flower in a large bowl on a terrace or balcony; large varieties need a pond and can grow over a metre tall. Lotus is hardy as long as its rhizomes stay under water, protected from frost.

Rhizomes are shipped during the planting season; outside it, orders are taken as pre-orders. For a cheaper start, lotus seeds germinate within a few days. The article Growing lotus in aquaponics presents the varieties and how to grow them.
