Floating pellets of 4 to 5 mm to enhance koi colour in summer

Excellent Color is the warm-season food in the Aquatic Science range, a Belgian manufacturer. It is fed from 16 °C upwards, when koi metabolism is at its peak and digestion keeps pace.

You receive a bag of 2 kg of medium pellets of 4 to 5 mm, 90% floating according to the brand's distributors. The fish come to collect them at the surface: you can see who is eating, who is refusing, and you cut off feeding before any surplus sinks to the bottom. In a pond as in an aquaponic system, every uneaten pellet ends up as nitrogen, which is exactly what our article on the nitrogen cycle describes.

What the formula tells you

Colours

Aquatic Science places emphasis on colour enhancement with this food, which it does not do with All Seasons. The label declares astaxanthin at 15 mg per kg, and the formula combines fish meal and fish oil, cereals, oil seeds, algae and minerals.

Immunity

The manufacturer claims the presence of probiotics, Bacillus subtilis on the label, and recommends this feed following a treatment or illness as well as during the breeding period.

Digestibility

This is one of the three points highlighted by Aquatic Science, alongside a crude fibre content limited to 3.2% and ash content of 9.6%.

The nutritional profile accounts for the rest. At 39.5% crude protein and 8.5% fat, Excellent Color is higher in protein than the maintenance food All Seasons, which peaks at 33.5%, and than the Wheat Germ Floating wheatgerm food at 32%. It should be given when the water is warm and the fish are digesting quickly, not when their metabolism is slowing down.

Which feed to use depending on water temperature

Our scale, from warmest to coldest

 • Above 16 °C: Excellent Color, in several small feeds per day.
 • 12 to 16 °C: switch to All Seasons, which retailers recommend from 10 °C.
 • 8 to 12 °C: wheatgerm only, 1 to 3 feeds per week.
 • Below 8 °C: no feeding at all, until the water temperature has settled durably above 10 °C again.

A point worth clarifying, because you often read the opposite. Many retailers sum up the guidance as stopping feeding below 10 °C. That's correct for a high-energy food like this one, but it doesn't apply across the entire range: Aquatic Science specifies its wheat germ formula for use between 5 and 15 °C. We use 8 °C as our threshold for stopping feeding altogether, as it provides a safety margin in our climate. Below that point, a koi's digestion shuts down, food ferments in the gut, and fasting is less risky than one meal too many.

Particle Size and Capacity

Aquatic Science offers Excellent Color in small (2 to 3 mm), medium (4 to 5 mm), and large (6 to 7 mm), in bags of 0.5, 2, 5, and 9.5 kg. The version listed here is the medium in a 2 kg bag, which specialist retailers recommend for fish of at least 15 cm. A pellet that is too large gets spat out and wasted; one that is too small forces the fish to take multiple bites and makes it impossible to judge the ration by eye. The other formulas are brought together in the pond fish food collection.

A feed rich in fish oil oxidises in light and heat. Reseal the bag after each use, keep it somewhere dry and out of direct light, and avoid any utility room that heats up in summer. At a daily ration of 2%, a 2 kg bag covers roughly ten days for 10 kg of fish, or a good month for 3 kg of fish, this is the size that avoids tying up stock that would go stale before being used.

Common mistakes to avoid

Avoid overfeeding at the spring restart: a pond turning green and a filter becoming saturated almost always trace back to this, as our article on green pond water explains in detail. Do not continue using Excellent Color once the water drops below 16 °C. Do not keep an opened bag from one season to the next. And never feed this food to ruminants or any other animal species, as the label makes clear: it contains fish meal.

Two situations where the ration needs adjusting differently

During a heatwave, water holds less oxygen and fish appetites become unreliable. Feed early in the morning, err on the side of smaller rather than larger portions, and keep an eye on the water level, a subject covered in our article on pond evaporation in summer. Before going away, a short fast is far better than leaving excess food floating on the surface.

Which Aquatic Science pond food to choose

Excellent Color compared with the three other Aquatic Science foods in the catalogue: All Seasons, Wheat Germ Floating and the sinking sturgeon food. The empty cell in the temperature row is not an oversight: no value is published for the sinking food.

Can't decide between these four foods? The right choice depends above all on your water temperature and the fish you are keeping.

The calculation uses a feeding rate of 2% of biomass per day, the figure commonly cited for water between 21 and 23 °C, the temperature range where Excellent Color is right at home. These guidelines are commonly published for koi carp; Aquatic Science publishes no feeding chart. Below 16 °C, Excellent Color is no longer the appropriate food. The rule that takes precedence: only feed what is consumed in under five minutes.
