Floating growth pellets for koi, in water above 16 °C

Champion Growth is the growth food in the Aquatic Science range. It is intended for koi carp that you want to see grow quickly without becoming overweight, with the aim of a muscular, not fatty body, achieved thanks to a crude protein content of 47% for only 8% fat. The pellets all stay at the surface, so you can see each koi come to take its share and nothing sinks to the bottom uneaten. It is a fine-weather formula, designed for the months when the water is warm and digestion copes easily with a rich ration.

💪 47% protein

Protein is what builds muscle. At 47%, this food provides almost one and a half times as much as the all-season food from the same brand, which has 33.5%. In a koi of 2 or 3 years old in warm water, this difference shows in the length gained over the summer and in the build of the fish. The fat content, meanwhile, is kept to 8%, which avoids fat being stored around the organs, the classic fault of overly energy-rich foods. In return, a high protein level produces more ammonium: your filtration must therefore be sized to handle this extra load.

Growth

The 47% protein and fat limited to 8% help the fish grow without making it fat.

Colours

The high level of astaxanthin and the natural pigments support the red of kohaku and showa over the long term.

Digestion

Bentonite, sepiolite and probiotics regulate the digestion of a fish that receives a large ration.

🌡️ Only above 16 °C

The packaging sets the minimum temperature at 16 °C. Below that, a koi's digestion slows too much to make use of such a rich ration, and the undigested food ends up in the water as nitrogen. In practice, this bag is opened when the morning thermometer stays consistently above this threshold, often from May, and put away in September or October depending on your region. Between 12 and 16 °C, the all-season food takes over, followed by the wheatgerm when the temperature drops further. Give several small meals a day rather than one large one, as a koi digests a rich ration better when it is spread across the day.

Not below 16 °C, and not unlimited

Do not feed this food in water below 16 °C, even if your koi beg for it. Do not feed it ad libitum: a rich ration left in the water degrades water quality faster than an ordinary food. Do not keep an opened bag from one season to the next. And do not feed it to ruminants or to any other animal species, as it contains fish meal.

A thermometer and an ammonium test

A floating thermometer tells you when to open this bag and when to go back to a lighter formula, since the 16 °C threshold decides the whole use. An ammonium test then shows you whether the filtration is coping with the ration: with 47% protein, this is the measurement that sets the quantity your pond can handle. Together, they help you avoid feeding too early in the season or too heavily for your filter.

🎨 Colour and immunity

Astaxanthin is the orange-red pigment that fish cannot make themselves and must obtain from their food. This formula contains a high level of it, which supports both colour and protection against oxidative stress. The effect on the koi's colouring will not show within a week: allow several weeks of regular feeding before judging the red of a koi. On the immune side, the formula combines immunostimulants and vitamins at distinctly higher doses than the all-season food, with, for example, 1,000 mg of vitamin C per kilo against 235 mg.

🌱 In aquaponics

In an aquaponic system, a large share of the nitrogen from the protein fed returns to the plants after passing through the filter. With 47% protein, 100 g of this feed given over the course of the day releases around 4.8 g of ammonium into the water, compared with 3.4 g for the all-season feed. This input suits hungry crops in high summer, such as tomatoes or squashes, but it becomes a constraint if your biofilter is only just coping. Increase the ration in steps of one week, measure the ammonium before each step, and move on to the next only if the reading stays low. In a modest grow bed, any excess shows quickly: cloudy water, rising nitrite levels, spreading algae. If that happens, keep this feed for the hottest months and use a lighter formula the rest of the time. The article on the nitrogen cycle explains how this load is shared between the filter, the fish and the plants.

Estimate the daily ration for your koi

Enter the total biomass of your koi, that is, the sum of their weights. The calculation uses 1.5% of the biomass per day, a common guideline for water at 18 to 22 °C. Use the result as a starting point, then adjust with the 5-minute rule.

0g per day

Total daily ration, to be split into three or four small meals, for water at 18 to 22 °C.

0 kg per month

The 1.5% factor is a guide for adult koi in warm water, consistent with the 1.5 to 2% of biomass published by the FAO for Cyprinus carpio. A one-year-old koi eats more. The overriding rule remains to give only what is eaten in under 5 minutes.
