Plant with millimetre precision, and shape the substrate without emptying the tank
The JBL ProScape planting tweezers and spatula are used to plant aquarium plants in exactly the right spot and to shape the substrate without emptying the tank. All four tools are 30 cm long, enough to reach the bottom. Plant at 45 degrees, pushing the plant 2 to 3 cm into the substrate.
Planting by hand in a filled aquarium means lifting the substrate, clouding the water and uprooting neighbouring plants. A planting tweezer spares you all three problems: it grips the plant by its base, pushes it a few centimetres into the grow medium, then withdraws, leaving the plant in place. The JBL ProScape tweezers measure 30 cm, which lets you reach the bottom of a standard tank without plunging your arm in, and their ridged jaws hold stems firmly without crushing them.
🌿 Three tweezers, three techniques
The P30 straight is the basic tweezer: it plants a single plant, a stem or a seedling with precision. The P30 fine, which is narrower, slips between plants that are already in place; it is also used to untangle long roots and to push small carpeting plants deep into the substrate, as they tend to float back out. The P30 curved grasps several plants at once to place a clump, and its curve keeps your hand out of your line of sight. All three can also be used to remove a dead leaf or a snail without disturbing the rest of the tank.
Single plant or stem
The straight P30 places it with precision.
Small carpeting plants
The P30 fine pushes them deep into the substrate.
Clump or group
The curved P30 picks up several at once.
Shaping the substrate
The SP30 double spatula moves and smooths the grow medium.
The SP30 is not tweezers but a double spatula, with a wide 62 mm blade, slightly concave, and a narrow 25 mm blade. It lets you move sand or nutrient-rich soil to create slopes, smooth the surface after planting and clean the edge of the grow medium against the glass. The small blade works between stones and roots, where the large one cannot reach.
Rinse and dry the steel after each use
Stainless steel can develop a light surface rust if it stays damp, especially around the jaws. Rinse your tools in fresh water after each planting session, then dry them before putting them away. They will keep their grip and polished finish for years.
🪴 Planting step by step
Remove the pot and the rock wool from the plant, trim overly long roots to 2 or 3 cm, then divide the clumps into small portions. Grip each portion at the base with your tweezers, angled at about 45 degrees, and push it 2 to 3 cm into the substrate. Open the tweezers without moving them, then withdraw them gently in a straight line: the substrate closes back over the roots. For a 60 cm foreground, one pot of carpeting plant divided into about twenty small clumps, planted every 3 cm, forms a continuous carpet within a few weeks.
Potted plants sold for aquariums often arrive as tight clumps. Before planting, place them on a damp plate and split them into portions of 3 or 4 stems, each with a few roots. The smaller your portions, the faster they take root and the sooner the carpet closes up. Keep your plants moist throughout the whole operation, as a root that dries out for just a few minutes recovers far less easily.
Plant from back to front and from large plants to small ones, so as not to crush what has just been put in place. After planting, run the spatula over the substrate to level it, then fill slowly, pouring the water onto a saucer or a bag placed on the bottom, which avoids uprooting the seedlings. Your tank can then have its usual lighting from the very first day.
🌱 In aquaponics
In aquaponics, grow beds filled with clay pebbles or gravel are planted in the same way: long tweezers let you transplant lettuce or herb seedlings into the middle of the grow medium without putting your hand in the water. The spatula then levels the pebbles after topping up or cleaning, and the fine tweezers remove dead leaves from a planted aquarium before they decompose. The article on choosing a grow medium for aquaponics compares planting media, and the one on getting an aquaponic system off to a good start explains how to install the first plants during cycling.
